He has put in many tireless years of service and through his perserverance and hard work, he has helped to make Concord College a better campus. As an active member of the Concord Alumni Association, he has worked endlessly and willingly to improve Concord. For his dedication to Concord, his friendly spirit, and his willingness to help all who seek it—we with deep appreciation and gratitude, dedicate the 1968 Pine Tree to Mr. James Otto McKinney. 6 Day is done, happily sighs Mr. McKinney! .AitS ADMINISTRATION and FACULTY PRESIDENT Wholly dedicated to a better Concord College, Joseph F. Marsh is completing his ninth year as Concord ' s president. His steady efforts toward quality education have focused this year on broader educational opportunities and stronger academic programs. Marked change in student-administra¬ tion relations has been accomplished smoothly through in¬ creased student representation in varied affairs of the College. A promising cooperative educational arrangement beginning this summer with Union College, Schenectady, New York, will offer special opportunities for students and faculty to gain from exchanges with another institution of different character. This year, too, has seen the beginning of change in the physical appearance of Concord ' s campus. A major building program was in full swing, promising thoroughly modern facilities to match the vitality of Con¬ cord College—a state college with a national outlook. Pages shall be turned to recall the Pines, the cam¬ pus buildings and the many activities spent during four years at Concord. Yet for a certain few these pages will relive different memories. Such as hours spent debating over which pictures to use, what pages to be cropped and days relived contemplating an editorial or dedication page to be written! The hustle and bustle, arguing and laughing, hours spent in the Pine Tree Office remain dear to only a certain few. In years to come only the Pine Tree Staff shall reminisce about the past with memories never to be forgotten of the 1968 Pine Tree Office. 116   03l CION j : jPm 1 - HP i [l- ■f k n - = 1 mk ' ft|| || ItcIp ’ I ilfi, Ifni 4 , Vypyfe- i Site:., w jt- r ' s : ® • y -Jr ' 1 ; . ] mmm T • Bpp 1 ■ ' ; . That first week was hectic for new students as well as old. Students were welcomed back to the campus with the sight of familiar places and faces, while some were welcomed with only unfamiliar places and faces. There was always a line to wait in—to buy books, to take your picture and to buy mailboxes. Pandemonium broke loose, tempers mounted, lines grew and Concord College became home! Time out for new acquaintances. Freshman soon learn the importance of mastering Back Alley ! . c r be r i ' t,, 5 ° 4 W iutm 7 ■ fiECUSS An endless line awaits those seeking mailboxes. Registration Day is a day of running to and fro and worrying whether you ' ll get the riqht The bookstore seemed to be where it was happenin’ those first few days. Silence is golden when all the hustle and bustle simmers down! A TIME FOR WORK Then it was back to the same old grind and summer was forgotten. Going to class, studying, and taking tests now seemed to occupy all of our time. To many of us there weren ' t enough hours in the day. To a Freshman it seems he will spend his whole life in a biology lab Darn television, I knew I should have studied last ni There must be an intramural game as the library isn ' t having one of its busier nights. 181 Man, I could have sworn I knew this test before I came in here! 182 g Next year I ' m getting a car! This bus is for the birds. THE DAY NEVER ENDS For some of us our day was just beginning when classes ended. There was always something we had to do, such as football practice, play rehearsal, or just a tired ride home if we commuted. It seemed as if we never stopped going. Come on—act like you ' re doing something here comes Coach Williams! -Jl St ' I m going to drive everybody crazy until they get the new fine arts center finished. COLLEGE ISN ' T ALL WORK Still there was plenty of time for us to relax and enjoy ourselves. To many of us our leisure time was a time to sit in the union and play bridge or talk. To others it was a time to pursue our many hobbies or to just be out of doors soak-| ing up ol ' sol. To all of us it was a time to make friends and| enjoy good company. say ma ' am, you certainly look lovely Hurry up Bill, you ' re making me dizzy! Good, now I won ' t have to read that boring history book. ppps 5 Boy, you sure look funny! The joy of giving at Christmas is shown on the faces of Mary Miller and Steve Anni at the Chil¬ dren ' s Christmas Party. The much frequented student union was the scene of many serious discussions. 186 Yea, I ' ve got the queen of spades but you ' ll never get it ■ Everyone changes when they get to college. College teaches us to rely on ourselves and to learn to get along with others. It is our last big fling before we go out into that big mean world. This is the time we will relive many times as the best times of our lives. One of these days I ' ll get to class on time Sure I ' m having a good time but I II be glad to get this coat and tie off. THE FACULTY OFF DUTY Somehow when we, the students, first see the faculty as Freshmen they are no more than just people to us. Later, we learn to associate them with things, other people and places. Often we associate them with classes, classrooms, and re¬ grettably grades. We see a faculty member in the Union smiling . . . drinking coffee and somehow we learn to classify him as a human, maybe even an individual. Yes, a faculty member is more than we first thought! wm KMtim. CLASSES OF M AND ' 42 HOLD REUNION June 3, 1967 was the scene of great joy and comfort be¬ cause this was the day that many persons were back on campus for the first time in several years. This was the day that the Class of 17, some of which had not been back on campus, met for the first time since graduation in the Spring of 1917. It was also the day that the 25th year class reunion, Class of 42, refreshed old acquaintances. The Class of 17, originally numbering 82, was represented by 15 persons. Many of the original number had long since passed on and several were too ill to attend or lived too far away. This small number by no means dampened their spirits because they put in a full day of mixing and mingling and generally having a great time. The Class of ' 42, on graduation day was composed of 123 members but not all of them made it back for their 25th reunion. Those that did were greeted by former classmates and friends and an equally full day of activities. Maybe they will be back for the 50th reunion. The Concord graduates of 50 years ago, 1917, are seated left to right: Jessie Keatly Vincent, Doctor Harry Hill, Billie Sale Fix, J G Lilly, Eunice Mann McWhorter and J. Grafton Bell. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CONGRATULATIONS AND MANY GOOD WISHES are extended to the Class of ' 68 by the Concord College Alumni Association, Inc. We also extend an invitation to each member of this class to continue their association with the College through the Alumni Association. The Alumni Association continued in 1967-68 to strive for greater growth in the capacity to serve Concord College and its alumni. The Association presently has fifteen Chap¬ ters in the United States. Most of these chapters are located in the immediate area, but we do have one in California and one in Michigan. We are constantly working on the forma¬ tion of new chapters and the increase of activity of present ones. The year 1967-68 witnessed several things that happened in the alumni association. Among these were: the reunion of the Classes of 17 and 42; the election of a new slate of officers which was headed by Mr. Jesse Ramsey, ' 37, as President, Mr. Olaf Vaught, ' 35, as first Vice-President, Mr. Glen Callihan, ' 50, as second Vice President, Mr. Walter Cooke, 37, as Treasurer, Dr. Cloyd P. Armbrister, ' 42, as Executive Secretary and William Estep, ' 63, as Field Di¬ rector; and the highlight of the year was the election of Miss Marcella Dee Whitlock, ' 39, as Alumnus of the Year, and Mrs. Florence K.
