When 1,447 of us came to play our part in making this a great Concord year, We came first and foremost for studies . . . r But toolc time out for the extra-curricular activities Of athletic events, and social occasions- Such as dances, the annual Christmas dinner, U and Greek prepping. T 1... PREPPING 0 AIAY DAY . IJINALJ' All of these activities made 1957 a year to be remembered, And its grand finale was graduation time. Caps and gowns were donned with sadness at leaving the campus beautiful Wliere knowledge was absorbed, character built, and memories stored. This was the day that climaxed the 1956-57 termg The seniors have trod the pathway of college life, Leaving others to follow in their footsteps And abide by the precedents they have so gloriously set at Concord. Graduation orewo ra' Concord goes on and on and on. Some of us leave each year to pursue our careers and our higher goals in life. With mingled regret and anticipation we leave the campus which has been our home for the past four years. We must say good-by to a favorite professor whose smile and helping hand have guided us onward. Reluctantly we bid farewell to our many friends and the care-free days so unique to college life. But yet we leave with the assurance that our Alma Mater will remain unchanged in the hands of our successors. Concord will always be The Friendly College on the Campus Beautiful. 5 In Illemvriam In memoriam of our friend, teacher, and counselor, Mrs. Gene- vieve Thompson, whose dedication, service and contribution toward both her field and fellowman will long be treasured memories. 12 7 W . 3 , y ,. ,. ....f,g,. an .,:g,.,, ir-.., 2 - .y -.si-.5 X 4 -: -,:5.:i.u 1- -:.F ,5: 1 i I , V35-I--:F -:5 Z. 8: .- -5.3 5522 L 5, E a. , 4 .53 - ,t . .,,,., .,,. ., , ., X A 1 il 5 is 4 , . , ,Q gil Xygiigg 1 ,11 Y if M 35 x 'f 1' E: 5 'Xia il,-lQ ' f fg Qi: -ie?-T G ' - fig , , -.-. : --r:..-Eagyg-, 3 .:,.-.,., ,Q ,L K 4 .5 tk I E ,KJ '55 t Q f sf a , E a , ,, , y 1 , M ,xi 'GW ' gr gf W ink For your wonderful personality which affords a nod and a smile for every student, for your sincere kindness and understanding toward us whenever we need a helping hand, for your years of service to Concord Collegeg for your willingness to serve your community, church, and fellowmang and most of all, for the simple reason that we all love you, we of the 1957 PINE TREE Staff wish to dedicate this annual to you, Mr. Rouse Cook. ,,,.,,,...,. .K f jc, at-W fi?n?:1 zf1g 'fa' E Adm in iftration I 'tw ff U A LK 4 Felcu ity ur Prefident For twelve years The administrative course Of Concord College has Been guided along the path Of sound education, Ever growing progress- In the growth of the Physical plant In the increased enrollmentg And has become widely Known as The Friendly College On the Campus Beautiful This guiding has been Under the direction of a Strong firm hand that Of Concord s president VIRGIL I-I STEWART Iiesident Qtusart enjox one of his mam admlnistratiu. func tions a he ple ents .1 bouquet to the queen at Homecf ming festn ltlcs DAVID KIRBY DAMARIS VVILSON- VV. Sponxor PURPOSE: Blue Key National Honor Fraternity was re-organized at Concord in the spring of 1956, after having been inactive here for two years, It is a national honor fraternity with approximately one hundred chapters throughout the United States. Menibers are chosen on the basis of academic achievement and leadership ability. Blue Key men are not expected to be just good studentsg they are expected to be well-balanced college men who are active in many phases of college life. The motto of Blue Key is Serving I Live , which may be interpreted to mean, I express my own life and character in what I am able to accomplish for my fellow men. After re-organization, the local chapter membership was too small for active participation on the campus, but, with the 1957 membership at twenty-four, the chapter plans to make Blue Key once again an organization active in its devotion to service to the college and community and to the enrichment of college life. l 4 Left to right: Kyra Ellison, Carol Brenda Smith, Mary jane Otey, Okie Lee Shrewsbury, Lou Ann McClung, Bonnie Robertson, Harrier Khatib, Betty Ford, Marjorie Marple, Nancy Yeager. He started his collegiate education at Davis and Elkins and completed it at Marshall College. Mr. Jamison says he is pleased with his job here and anticipates a brighter basketball future. He lives at the boys' dormitory, with his family, where he serves as di- rector. MUSSCI Jumps against Killingsworth of Beckley College. The first night of the 1956-57 basketball season looked rather promising for Concord as the Lions squeezed out a 90-88 victory over the spirited Davis and Elkins five. But soon afterwards they came up against W. Va. Tech, the highest scoring team in the nation, and met with an astounding defeat of 140-91. From here on out Concord saw very few wins. In the tournament Concord met the powerful Tech Bears in the opening game. Tech won by a score of 115-76. The team did not make a very good showing in terms of victories. However, as Coach Jamison says, athletics cannot be measured in terms of victories and classes. Mr, Jamison said that he realized when he came here that he was taking over a ball club rl nt lacked experience as a unit. Yet he feels that the team has given a good account of themselves and that the impr-ovement they have shown gives him reason to forecast a brighter future. Rogers dribhles down court. Home Concord is fortunate in having one of the best track set-ups in the state. This year, track activi- ties began on March 18, but, since the track and field facilities were incomplete, no competition with other schools was scheduled. However, the Physical Education Department sponsored an intra-college meet in April. This event was patterned after the regular WVIAC meet and was opened to all men of the college. Wiliners of this local meet represented Concord at the annual WVIAC track meet at Oglebay Park on May 13 and 14. The athletic directors are very optimistic about Concordis track future. They feel that, with our excellent facilities and with a lot of support, Con- cord's track program will soon be operating on a competitive level. It is the Pep Squad who is always on hand in the stadium, the gymnasium, and the grand stand to cheer the Mountain Lions on to victory or to keep up their spirits when defeated. Theirs is the responsibility to keep the school spirit high, which is very essential in sparking the initiative of the team. This year the Intramural program played a big part in cre- ating a competitive yet friendly atmosphere on campus, among both Greek and non-Greelc organizations. Under the supervi- ih sion of Mr. Robert Kyle and, with Vic Foti as this year,s Intra- if mural Manager, this program proved very successful. In review, the Sig Taus started off last fall by grabbing the touch football championship and followed that by winning the coveted first place in tennis singles. The Tri Delts then picked up the top spot in the handball ' singles and again in horseshoes singles. Nothing like Z1 four limbed guard on your trail Men? Intramurals Q, The lnilepenclent Men's Club battles it out with the men of the Phi Delta Pi in Il game of touch football. Not to be outdone, the Sig Taus bounced back to nab the giant volleyball championship and the ping pong singles. One of the most interesting contests of the Intramural Program, the swim meet, was talcen by two well matched teams. The Phi Delts and the Tri Delts fought hard to out do one another but the most they could do was settle for a tie. Our intramural program is not yet finished but as we go to press we know that this year's champion- ship will be eyed by all and that it will be a close race. At this time the Sig Taus lead the paclc with 540 points, closely followed by the Tri Delts with 495 points and the Vets with 440: The Phi Delts are fourth with 370 points while not far behind are the Kappa Sigs with 265 points and the Independent Men with 160.
