THE PRESIDENT SAYS Greetings The days of our years at Concord have been good to me — varied col- ored autumns bringing all types of students, snowy, snappy winters shutting us in with our thoughts, and gay springtime with the sad good-bye of grad- uation. Our PINE TREE binds the whole for the days of our future . Hail to the staff and greetings to all from cover to cover. — Joseph Franklin Marsh. Page 11 0. . n -£ ,

THE COLONEL ... to whom the 1940 Pine Tree has been affectionately dedicated. Editor ' s Note: We have asked for- mer students to express their thoughts of Colonel G. B. Beckett. No Concordian, either student or alumnus, can ever forget Col. Beckett and his service to the college. James Green, ' 38. Through the years whenever I re- turned to the Concord Campus I have marvelled at the ease with which Col. Beckett has performed the multitudin- ous task that his office demanded. — H. W. Straley III, ' 23. I only wish that Concord had more ' Colonels ' . He is a grand old gentle- man and has been an inspiration to every student that has attended Con- cord College. —A. H. Spangler, ' 34. I knew ' Colonel ' as a sympathetic friend and an efficient administrator of buildings and grounds. — Lyman Bob Rodes, ' 36. I can think of no more fitting tribute to a splendid and lovable character than the dedica- tion of the Pine Tree to Colonel Beckett. — C. H. Archer, ' 25. I shall always remember Colonel Beckett as a man who was wise enough to attend strictly to his own duties and at the same time show a kindly interest in the welfare of all students at Concord. — Guy H. Biggs, ' 32. Colonel Beckett will forever be remembered by the students at Concord as the finest and most faithful supporter of the college. — The Editors. Page 10

The Theme of the 1940 Pine Tree We, the editors of the 1940 PINE TREE, have at- tempted in the following pages to present a chrono- logical memory book of Days of Our Years at Con- cord College . Our concept of an annual is that it will be a cher- ished possession of the student in the future. It will recall the pleasures of those undergraduate years when we were all seeking a basis for a fuller and happier life. This PINE TREE is different from previous books in that we have attempted to depict your classmates, pro- fessors and the outstanding events of a full college life as you saw them. In this book especially prepared for you, we have marked one milestone on the road of life. We fervent- ly hope that through this medium many hours of pleasure will be derived from the pages herein and that this volume will meet with the approval of the students in the same manner as past editions.
