Beckett. No Concordian, either student or alumnus, can ever forget Col. Beckett and his service to the college. James Green, ' 38. Through the years whenever I re- turned to the Concord Campus I have marvelled at the ease with which Col. Beckett has performed the multitudin- ous task that his office demanded. — H. W. Straley III, ' 23. I only wish that Concord had more ' Colonels ' . He is a grand old gentle- man and has been an inspiration to every student that has attended Con- cord College. —A. H. Spangler, ' 34. I knew ' Colonel ' as a sympathetic friend and an efficient administrator of buildings and grounds. — Lyman Bob Rodes, ' 36. I can think of no more fitting tribute to a splendid and lovable character than the dedica- tion of the Pine Tree to Colonel Beckett. — C. H. Archer, ' 25. I shall always remember Colonel Beckett as a man who was wise enough to attend strictly to his own duties and at the same time show a kindly interest in the welfare of all students at Concord. — Guy H. Biggs, ' 32. Colonel Beckett will forever be remembered by the students at Concord as the finest and most faithful supporter of the college. — The Editors. Page 10 THE PRESIDENT SAYS Greetings The days of our years at Concord have been good to me — varied col- ored autumns bringing all types of students, snowy, snappy winters shutting us in with our thoughts, and gay springtime with the sad good-bye of grad- uation. Our PINE TREE binds the whole for the days of our future . Hail to the staff and greetings to all from cover to cover. — Joseph Franklin Marsh. Page 11 0. . n -£_, The Theme of the 1940 Pine Tree We, the editors of the 1940 PINE TREE, have at- tempted in the following pages to present a chrono- logical memory book of Days of Our Years at Con- cord College . Our concept of an annual is that it will be a cher- ished possession of the student in the future. It will recall the pleasures of those undergraduate years when we were all seeking a basis for a fuller and happier life. This PINE TREE is different from previous books in that we have attempted to depict your classmates, pro- fessors and the outstanding events of a full college life as you saw them. In this book especially prepared for you, we have marked one milestone on the road of life. We fervent- ly hope that through this medium many hours of pleasure will be derived from the pages herein and that this volume will meet with the approval of the students in the same manner as past editions. The Callaghan machine soon proved that it could play football when the eleven turned on the power to defeat Roanoke, Potomac State, New River and Fairmont. The maroon and gray lads tied the highly touted Morris-Harvey eleven but went down to defeat before Glenville, Emory and Henry, and King. Dusan Cvizic was awarded a place on the All-State eleven and Al Hull was put at tackle on the second team. Capt. S. Wooddell Assistant James Callaghan Freshman Coach Sam Bowers Page 38 Of the Gymnasium At the opening of the 1939 season Ccach W. S. Wooddell ' s varsity cagers looked like anything but a basket-ball team. Their performance in the opening game against Fairmont mark- ed them as just another basket-ball team. Fairmont took the Mountain Lions into camp with little trouble. The old fight just didn ' t seem to be there. As the season progressed the team began to round into shape. The combination of Pendleton, Adamos, J. McNeish, B. McNeish, and Silvent looked like the team. Pendleton was lost to the squad because of academic difficulties and Wooddell again had trouble on his hands. However, Harold Smith, diminutive veteran of last year ' s team, came through in fine shape to fill the gap. After all these diffi- culties were overcome the Mountain Lions went to town and became one of the best teams of the Wooddell regime. They took the measure of eleven of the seventeen quintets which were met. Revenge was sweet against Fairmont. A high scor- ing game at Alderson-Broaddus saw the Maroon and Gray lads lose out by the score of 85 to 79. Loss of J. McNeish, Silvent and Adamos via the foul route probably turned a victory into a defeat. The high spot of the season came in the finale when, the Mountain Lions displayed their best basket-ball of the season to defeat a highly touted Glenville five in the last few minutes of a mad contest. The Wooddell proteges looked like world- beaters in the game against Glenville and it was on this basis that the sports writers of the state picked the Mountain Lions as a darkhorse in the state tournament. The Midget five gave their best against a strong Wesleyan quint but went down in defeat by the score of 48 to 44 in the first game of the tourney. Big Jim McNeish, rangy center, led the Mountain Lion cru- sade against the baskets and his performance netted him a place on the all-state five. Captain Paul Adamos proved his worth as a basket-ball player of repute time and again. As a nucleus for next year ' s five Coach Wooddell can count on the McNeish brothers, Joe Trdenic, Francis Silvent, Andy Pendleton and Cline Gilley. Several members of Coach Sam Bowers ' frosh squad will augment the veterans. Houchins B. Not from the viewpoint of the season ' s record but from the standpoint that the sport proved more popular. After the first meet of the year three of the boys whom Coach Poling had depended on to form the nucleus of the team were forced to leave school or give up swimming. Captain Frank Lowe, Pete McGlothlin and Baxter McNeer were lost to the team. It looked dark but, overcoming the handicap, the mermen went to work and won two of seven meets against competition completely out of their class. The high spot of the year was the triangular meet with Kenyon and V. P. I. It marked the first time that a triangular swimming meet had ever been held in West Virginia. Capt. Morefield, Lilly, Stickel, Tolhurst proved to be the chief point- getters for the aquamen. The rapid improvement in the relay teams helped the Concordians gain several points on their opponents.
