M Qt, Q N A Q f Ebscfiaablon 'To you Miss Wagner, we, the class of 1957 can never adequately express our gratitude for the many years you have been an intrinsic part of our school. Yours was the diflicult task of introducing our class of doubtful and rebellious adolescents to a world which contains so much more than we had ever dreamed. Thanks to your far-sighted guidance we have learned to seek the pith of matters demanding our reflection, in lieu of skirting the margins of the issue. Those of us who were fortunate enough to work with you on class productions remember well your unfailing enthusiasm and ingenuity. Concord Academy and the grad- uating class are fortunate indeed for the privilege of knowing your enduring patience and selfless generosity. ggdflgfi fo M. Jeff Qjacuffy FACULTY Top Row: Young, McBee, Marsh, Mercer, Lindsay, Eddy, Howe, Marsh Bottom Row: Powers, Miller, Morse, Wight, Coe, Demille, Coombs. The 34 highly individualistic members of the class of 1957 have spent varying lengths of time at Concord Academy, enjoying and avoiding varying pursuits and interests. We are unani- mous on only two, widely separated matters- we all babble much too much, and we all have the same deep appreciation of the mani- fold blessings we have gained from knowing you. The timorous tremblings which would fol- low May I seeiat her convenience P , have long since yielded to a lighthearted anticipation of the conference to come. Our inevitable agi- tations about college and life after gradua- tion have been soothed most skillfully, with well-chosen witticisms and sentences of easily applicable wisdom. On leaving Concord behind us in actuality if not in memory, we will think of you not only as an ideal headmistressn, but as a very real and admirable person who has contributed immeasurably to our concept and understanding of life both within and without Concord Academy. OOU FACULTY Now I think you ought to try to keep your voices down in the halls and recently I've no- ticed quite a few Senior's names on the wood list . . . We thank you, Mrs. Wilson, for hold- ing our hand as we made our precarious way through the Senior year. You have stuck with us through thick and thin, quieted the babbling brood and boosted our downtrodden spirits. Grace a vous, we have survived the year with relatively few battle scars. The Student Council is composed of the president and vice- president of each class, and includes the chair- men of various organizations which concern the Whole student body. Council meetings are held once a Week, at which problems relevant to a particular class or the whole school are intro- duced and discussed. The members of the Stu- dent Council then return to their respective classes and discuss the suggestions offered in Council. Matters necessitating discussion and! or election by the entire student body are brought up in a general assembly, which is presided over by the President of the Student Council, and may be held with or without the presence of the faculty. This year particular emphasis has been placed upon our Honor Study Hall, the most tangible evidence of the Honor System, Our 1957 Coun- cil, headed by Polly Graham, has' done a most commendable job in furthering the school mot- to, Honor is our tradition. cuss ommiffas The alleged purpose of House Committee is to serve as a liaison between the boarders and the House faculty, which puts the House Com- mittee member in the nebulous position of a diplomat without diplomatic immunity. QSurely we all know that by definition, a House Com- mittee Member is someone, who after scrupu- lously scolding some poor unfortunate for not wearing slippers, looks down and spies her own bare feet in guilty horror-in other words, a very human paragon of virtuej The House Committee has accomplished its purpose most successfully this year through House Committee meetings held once a week in Miss McBee's room. In these meetings, sug- gestions and questions from the boarders have been ,passed on to the faculty, and, conversely, the faculty has offered suggestions and given commands to the House Committee member. The House Committee this year consisted of a Head of House, and two permanent members from the Senior class, Ann Ingersoll and Diana Wilson, in addition to the approximately three members from each house who are elected each term. The committee members in each house also hold a meeting once a week, primarily to warn wayward boarders about using profanity on the telephone , or to change the bell list. This year's House Committee, presided over by Didette Van Slyck, has done a fine job-no one has caught cold from not wearing slippers, and we can safely assume that the boarders and the House faculty exist in happy peace, a peace interrupted only by the telephone and the rising bell. As a result of the large number of participants, Glee Club was this year divided into two sections, the Sharps , and the Flats , Naturally these labels are not intended to reflect on the quality of our performances. The convenience resulting from working with a smaller group has given us many concerts and dances. In November, both choruses felt particularly honored to sing in -Sanders Theater with the Radcliffe Choral Society, and the evening was a tremendous success. The entire school also joined in singing its traditional concert with Middlesex and Concord High School in the Concord Armory at the close of the school year. Another facet of the Music Department is the Choir, a small group of girls particularly interested in music who meet faithfully once a Week with Miss Loring. The Choir has worked on a repertoire of 16th Century songs. The Ensemble meets with Mr. Brown once a week. A special vote of thanks should go to Miss Loring, for her inspiring leadership, and to Connie, for her amazing efficiency. Separately, both choruses had a full schedule of entertainment. The Flats sang with Groton in November, Andover in February and closed their choral season by entertaining Brooks in April. The Sharps performed with the Bel- mont Hill Glee Club in january, and were hostesses to Exeter in March. In addition, each chorus gave a separate Christmas Concert in the Middlesex Chapel, singing the Bach B Minor Mass, our major accomplishment of the year. J ABBERWO-CKS V. White, C. Adams, C. Wells, A. While it was created to give recog- nition to the outstanding literary works of the school, it also serves as a school newspaper, reporting and reflecting school life. The formation of the new art depart- ment provides those interested in photog- raphy or drawing with an opportunity to contribute their talent. The Chameleon sponsored a widely-publicized literary con- test based on the quotation from john Donne, No man is an island ..., which was won by Miphi Brooks. Much of the credit for the Chame- leon's excellence this past year has been due to the guidance of Miss Mendenhall, our faculty advisor, and the efiicient lead- ership of Marge Reynolds. C Adams, M. Long, N. MacLaurin. Olde English theme which transformed the gym into a quaint English village, complete with ye olde shoppes laden with the goods prepared by the students, faculty and friends of the school. The Fair was a definite financial triumph, as well as a lot of fun, for we made 351,275.38 This money has been divided among a number of charitable organizations chosen by the school. .fifizazy Qommiftaa The Library Committee is not an associ- ation of bookworms. The only resemblance it bears to same is that its members may frequently be found hiding in, or behind, books, trying to avoid someone who wants work done. It is headed by two people who are just the right size for this-Ansti Greene and Fran Behr. Aside from this it maintains a small police force of people who peer over one's shoulder, ostensibly to see if one is hoarding a library book, and do inscrutable things with hiero- glyphics inside other books. This, being its second year of existance, the Library Committee hasn't been too vociferous about its proceedings. However, upon bearding the lions in their den, we find them full of plans and ideas, so it looks like we may find ourselves with an organ- ized library system before long, under the able guidance of Miss Young. 5 510505 Gund Service Fund is the school organization which directs all charitable drives and services. This year we have collected everything from students ffor volunteer visiting aidj to tin cans of foodg from clothes for Hungarian relief to money, The most important function of the Service Fund is to organize and present, with the help of the school, an annual Fair, which this year was held before Christmas. Contrary to the connotations of the above title, the Dance Committee does not consist of an exclusive circle of persons afllicted with St. Vitus' Dance or a passion for Ring-Around-the- Rosie. Rather, they are a group of girls bent on collecting 34.50 for the I-II Dance, frienzedly writing invitations, and performing Herculean miracles with crepe paper in order to transform the gym into a suitable atmosphere for a dance. This year's Dance Committee has carried on the behind-the-scenes operations necessary for the success of the concert dances and the mem- orable I-II Dance under Moni Wulff's capable leadership. Gqtfifatic cgiiociatiorz Our Athletic Association, run adeptly by Hart Birnie and Anne McLean, manages the more technical aspects of the long-standing rivalry between the two school teams, the Reds and the Blues. The Indoor Meet in March and the October Meet in May are the most important occurrences of this rivalry, but the numerous Red and Blue games throughout the year have had a great deal of excitement and support. +++4 Another facet of C. A.'s athletic program this year has been a radical departure from those of other years, for Concord Academy is now participating heavily in interscholastic sports.
