lVlishaps Defeated This year's track team had its fair share of ups and downs. We started the season with a limited number of runners, a record low I might add, com- pared to the usual turn out. With three Seniors, nine Juniors, and 23 Frosh!Soph, the team was deter- mined in their efforts to win. We lost the first few meets, but used them as a base to learn from. Practices were intense and the goals of every individual were set. The hard work paid off as the winning began to start. Records were shattered by Frosh!Soph as well as Junior and Sen- iors. Midway through the season the team lost nine members due to injuries, ranging from pulled mus- cles to broken bones. The iniuries did not hamper the remaining team's efforts. It seemed the smaller the team got, the harder the rest worked. And it was rewarding as we placed in the Cougar Track Classic, the Palatine Relays, and took first at the Cougar Relays. There were State Qualifiers: Kurt Kern for Pole Vault, Iohn Angell for the 100 and 200 Meter Dash, and Eric Suender for the Two Mile Run. Coach Gummerson's saying Gold medals don't come in Cherrio boxes, holds true. An athlete does decide how good he or she wants to be. A coach is there for guidance. I have had the priviledge and honor to be under such guidance from two of the greatest coaches, Mr. Ayres and Mr. Gummorsen. Dedication to athletic excellence is what they strive for and I give them my deepest gratitude for that. For the next generation of runners, I wish you the best of luck. l'lI never forget the times we've shared. Go after your goals and I hope to see you down state. Dave Kenik 19' arf W ttiiawa
