Students Strive For Excellence Students for Excellence was not formed to do things, but to be about things. Using our various adventure days and projects which included You are Special Day, Disney Day, Holiday Greeting Cards, You Are A Celebration of Life ltsell, A lun- cheon for the entire staff in the redecorated student cafeteria, breakfast rolls on Valentine's Day, Chicago Day, plus leadership seminars and peer tutoring throughout the year, we hoped to bring a smile to the face of others, to make them feel a little better about Conant, about coming to work and maybe, if even for a short time, to feel better about themselves. Stu- dents for Excellence was about leaders. There is no question that the position of LEADER has been over- glamorized to the point of non-reality. Our society has given the impression that leaders are given special privileges, are exempt from any menial tasks and are constantly in the spotlight of fame and fortune. Nothing could be further from the truth. Leaders and leadership involve giving, leadership is about doing for others, leadership is based on make the WE-US more important than the I-ME, Leadership is about wanting to be excellent-unselfishlyl A list of participants involved in Students for Excellence would be most difficult to produce, and here is why. From the very beginning of the year I have insisted that the membership be very fluid. Student involvement has depended on the activity, time of year, time investment required, when the performance is scheduled, ect. Of course there have been those students who are always involved, but l really do not feel that we should begin' to list them and exclude the others. Steve Hoernemann ttllockvvise-above! The Jesse Ilita Tumbling Team was the main attraction at the Chicago Day assembly. Conant Sturlmts are Special was the main theme of Students for Excellence. This group represents only a few of the enthusiastic members. The Chicago Honey Bear stunned the crowd. The Living Seas was one of the many different transformations made to Conant on Disney Day. Mr. Hoernemann and students help set up before the big day. You Are Special locker decorations that lined every locker were the first event Students for Excellence sponsored. When ascendhg the stairs on Chicago Day, you found hallways transformed into parts of Chicago, such as Chinatown. 24lStudents For Excelence
