Homecoming Another Victory The 1980 Homecoming game matching Comstock and Otsego proved to be one of the most ex- citing and enjoyable in recent years. During the week of practice prior to the game, Comstock’s starting quarterback, Chip Rosenbaum, suffered an ankle injury and Bill Beeke started the game. After Bill, who also started on defense, was injured, Chip came off the bench and the Colts were forced to use the “Shotgun” formation during the game which was a total change in the offensive attack for the Colts. Chip completed 11 of 16 passes for 164 yards and threw the winning touchdown pass of 59 yards to Dave Gabriel. The always strong Comstock defense, led by Rod Blank, Paul Chmiel, Keith Jones, and Dan Gleason held Otsego to only one first down in the second half to preserve the victory and get the Colts well on their way to their third consecutive Wolverine Conference Championship! King and Queen Crowned The 1980-81 Fall Homecom- ing court was chosen Monday October 13 at a pep assembly before approximately 875 facul- ty members and students. Rod Blank, Chip Rosenbaum, Jeff Daniels, Bill Beeke, and Don Chapman were the elected King candidates while Allison Sparks, Maura Boran, Laurie Ledbetter, Sheri Deal, and Brenda Boston were chosen Queen candidates. Ballots were passed out to the student body and the votes were tabulated. The final results were heard during halftime of the homecoming game against Otsego. Lauri Ledbetter was crowned Queen and Chip Rosenbaum was presented with the scepter. Disney Sweeps Comstock This year’s Homecoming Dress-Up Week turned out to be quite a success compared to previous years. Due to increased school spirit, a lot of kids par- ticipated in Disney Days. On Monday, the halls were filled with Disney characters from the Seven Dwarfs to Peter Pan. Tuesday was Cinderella — Prince Charming Day. Everyone dressed in their best because it was also picture day for the underclassmen. Wednes- day was Goofy Day and everybody searched their closets for stripes, checks, and polka-dots, pulling on anything that they normally wouldn’t be caught dead in. Thursday re- quired little or no preparation for school for it was Sleeping Beauty day and pajamas were the dress code for the day. Last but not least, Friday was a tribute to our school. It was blue and white day and blue pride shined on. Winning the dress days was only one of the requirements to be awarded the spirit trophy at the pep assembly on Friday. There was also a hall decorating competition between the four classes. Each class was assigned a section of the hall to cram in as many signs and decorations as they possible could. Then came Friday, the day of the pep assembly and the awarding of the spirit trophy. The pep assembly went well with many thanks going to the cheerleaders for dedicating their time and effort in making it such a good assembly. The juniors won the yelling competi- tion, as always and it was finally time to see who had won the trophy. The competition was stiff but the seniors pulled through winning the hall decorating contest and all but one of the dress up days. The first thing they had won in four years! Big Senior Upset Wednesday, October 15,1980. Tension mounted in the halls of Comstock High. Cheers of a hoped for victory could be heard before school, between classes, and during lunch hours. The senior and junior girls were at it again. This was the day of the powder puff football game. The night began at 6:00 with a Volkswagen push between all four classes, which was won by the juniors. This was followed by a blazing bonfire that added to the heat being generated be- tween the two opposing teams. When the fire died down, there was a mad rush for the football field and the game was under- way. Both teams marched onto the field with looks of contempt spread across their faces. The juniors were the first to put points on the scoreboard with Allison Hope rushing into the end zone for 6. The score was raised to 7 when Colleen Reynolds ran in for an extra point. Colleen also added 6 more with another touchdown. With the score now 13-0 the seniors were ready to revolt. Cindy Cortes slid into the end zone for their first and only touchdown of the game. Sheri Deal ran in the extra point and raised the score to 13-7. The scoring came to a halt after Allison Hope ran it in for 6 more. The seniors had suffered a heartbreaking 19 7 defeat. Breaking Tradition Powder puff wasn’t the only thing that broke tradition dur- ing homecoming week of 1980. Due to the resurfacing of the track the 1st annual homecom ing parade was held from North Elementary to the high school to show off four colorful floats, cold but beautiful Queen can- didates, and the bands of both CHS and Otsego. This year’s theme was Disney Day and with that the seniors also broke their own tradition by walking off with 1st place in float competi- tion with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck “rolling down to victory.” The sophomores followed in 2nd place with Her- bie the Lovebug “riding down to victory,” juniors came in 3rd with Winnie the Pooh pushing a bulldog in a pot of honey, and the freshman received 4th place with their colorful Donald Duck.
