Varsity Football This year’s ‘71-72’ Colt football team had everything except that last little push at the end, causing them to come out on the short end more times than they had wished for. The ‘71-72’ season being the last for Head Coach, Wayne Hunt did hold some pleasing things for him; such as almost up- setting Calesburg-Augusta, who was rated number one in the state. Then winning the third game and the last game of the season for him, winning big in the last over Three Rivers 36-14. Thanks to retiring coach, Wpyne Hunt, after many fine years of dedicated coach- ing, there have been many fine well- rounded young men come out of Comstock High School’s Varsity Football program and this year’s team was no exception! This year’s “71” golf season was one that had alot of voting talent come forward. The bigger part of the team was made up of freshmen and the team’s num- ber one golfer was a freshman. Head coach Hon Deuitch looks forward to next year because he feels even through they only managed to win one match they got progressively l etter as the year went on and in the years to come things will be great for the Colt golfers. Dwight Walden: This year s number one golfer. 24 c c r o o u s n s t r y First Row: Joe Ryan, Torn Terry, Dale Vorenkamp, Doug Jonas, John Roth, Bill Christiansen. Dan Erler, Dave Buck, Smith, Phil Jones. Second Row: Coach Barry Dopp, Greg Ron Buck. t Beware of the hear! Dave Buck on his way to setting a new school record. Coach Barry Dopp’s explosive Colt Cross Country team trotted to 3 wins this season which was their best so far in the Colts history even though it was a low place in the Wolverine Conference. The dynamic team with return- ing lettermen like Dave Buck, Tom Ellison, Hon Buck, and Dan Erler and a few more yearlings added to the team helped improve the Colts pace. The cross country course was changed in the Colt territory so more specta- tors could observe the Colts display of their hard rugged- ness and defeatless efforts to a mighty victory. Keep in mind when thinking of the Colt Cross Country Team Beware of the Rear! 25 Front iuw from left to right; Rena Eesley, Karin Long, Theresa Tomilo, Joanne Gleason, Karyl Kraushaar. Some of the main activities throughout the week con- sisted of the bonfire, snake dance, and the powder puff game, which saw the Seniors overwhelm the Juniors, as tradition would have it. Class efforts in building the best float added to the excitement as the freshmen class came out on top. The climax of the fun-filled, spirited week was the crowning of Ken Thomas and Sue Dodgson as the 1971 Football Homecoming King and Queen. 32 33 Peggy Bennett and Rick Schipper Debbie Tucker and Don Mann Front Row. The Death and Life of Larry Ben- son was this year’s Thespian’s Fall Production, under the direction of Mrs. Gwen Kulesa, Mr. Michael Stripp, and student director Barb Geary. The drama took place in a little town of Oakmont, where the Ben- son family, Freda (Lin Wollam), Sam (Rod Rider), and Jessie (Mich- elle Lewis), lived waiting for their lost son, Larry (Pete VanderKley), who they assumed dead after 3 years; until one day he returned home. Comedy entered the scene with an old teacher, (Karen Nangle) and a nosy neighbor, (Liz Van- derKley) who believed he was not the real Larrv Benson. Director and Producer It ic t i good! Coach Larry Pickett’s Varsity Colt Grapplers was a team which excelled in individual accomplishments and dis- played the highest form of team spirit and sportsmanship. Even with a one win and eleven loss season against one of the toughest areas of competition in the state, they had built themselves as the wrestlers to beat when it came to area tournament records in the area. The Colt’s had one of the most impressive invitational and tournament records in area. Efforts by Bill Cerry brought back firsts from the Hackett Invitational and a most impressive first place victory at Greater Kalamazoo’s First Annual Wres- tling Tournament. Randy Mann also t|ook a first place victory at Greater Kalamzaoo Tournament and in addi- tion to his victory he was chosen to the Greater Kala- mazoo Wrestling Team. Randy and Don Mann were con- stant winners in their Senior year at Comstock. Another asset to the team was a junior, Russ Foreman who placed third in the Regionals and went on to the State cham- pionships. Last but not least the most spirited player on the team. Charlie Siebor. Charlie a Senior, was also a fine wrestler who was unable to wrestle most of the season be- cause of a serious spinal injury which occured during a wrestling match earlier in the year. Comstock is proud to have such outstanding wrestlers. 64 Girls’ Reserve Basketball Front row lr, Deb Dombos, Karen Sparks, Paula Chase, Kim Cooper, Nancy Noteboom, Luncinda Stinson, Debbie Kimball. Only two re- turning regulars were back from the '71 team. The two regulars were catcher, Ken Thomas and third baseman, Don Mann. As the season progressed so did the team. Some of the highlights of the season were the effective pitching of freshman, Mike Costello and sophomore, Fred Webster. Another was going to the final game in the Wolverine Conference Tournament after being last in the regular dual competition. The team at the present time, is one of four teams still in the District Tournament, and is composed mainly of Freshmen and Sophomores; which means we will lx? back in contention next year. 82 Season Record Comstock 10 Galesburg-Augusta 5 Comstock 2 Cull Lake 7 Comstock 4 Pennfield 6 Comstock 4 Allegan 2 Comstock 2 Kalamazoo Christian 6 Comstock 2 Otsego 9 Comstock 5 St. Phillip 4 Comstock 0 Plainwell 10 Comstock 5 Vicksburg 7 Comstock 5 Parchment 6 Comstock 4 South Haven 5 Comstock 4 Three Rivers 5 Comstock 5 Paw Paw 20 Comstock Comstock 4 3 Otsego 3 Hacked 1 Comstock 9 Plainwell 7 Comstock 2 Kalamazoo Central 4 Comstock 4 Allegan 5 Comstock 4 Del ton 3 Comstock 3 Vtidclleville 2 84 An umpires view. The Comstock Colts thundered to their finest track season ever in 1972. After losing their first dual meet, they galloped to ten straight dual wins for a 10-1 season record. Tile most notable achievement of the season was a fifth place in the state class “B” finals highest ever for any colt athletic team. The fastest colts ever also picked up the first team trophies in the school’s history: Southwestern Michigan in- door invitational co-champions, Comstock invitational relays champions. Wolverine conference co-champions. Terry Fields finished 2nd in the state in 10(1 yard dash while Dan Erler was fifth in the high hurdles, these two men along with Terry VanderMolen and Ken Thomas were 3rd in the state 880 relay and 6th in the 440 relay for a total of 24 points. Recorded breaking performances were turned in by Dan Erler, Terry Fields, Terry VanderMolen, Ken Thomas, Dave Buck, and Mark Carson as they set eight new school records in the individual events and relays. The champion of champions meet was held at Kalamazoo Central in Early June. This meet pits champions of all classes against each other. The team enjoyed good depth this year, with seven players breaking 1 (K) games; these players were: Bruce Churchill—157. Hon Doud—139, Alan Randall—127, Pete VanderKIey—125, Tom Ryan—130, and Mike Caro and Bill Christiansen both with 101 games. The Stage Band The end of a successful performance. Girls in 509 100 The Girls in 509 . A comedy and political satire based upon two Republican women who disagree with the political situation of the 1920 s, so they go into se- clusion for 20 years. The comedy was especially hilarious in the light of this year’s presidential election. Tom Dcsposato (Pusey) was a not-so-competent re porter but was an appealing courier to Lin Wollam (Mimsy) in her efforts to get a man. A zebra trap was the catch for many intruders and kept the audience laughing. The Play has a happy ending as the two women find wealth, happiness and a man as they go out to face the world. (Last place for four consecutive years). Mama Mia’s Spagetti made it to the table. We found more than one use for toi- let paper, and more often than not, you saw your neighbor at Swinging Gates, than in your fifth hour class. To top it off, the age of majority came down to eighteen, so we could drink, legally. These four years ended in June. But the memo- ries will never end for the class of 1972. 146 Mmm! For Football Homecoming wc came in third place with our float. Another thing that we’ve been suc- cessful is winning the Spirit Jug. We have alot of School Spirit which was shown at the Pep Assemble’s. This year we ordered our Class Rings. We had two different styles round and square. Most of us spent our last few pennies on our down payments for our “74” rjngs. We can tell already the class of “74” is going to make the best of things! Henry 170 FRESHMEN 171 “United to Victory” said the class of “75”. That was the theme of the Freshmen Boat that won us first place in football home- coming 1971. It’s just a shame we didn’t fol- low that theme in our own football games. What a season! Well, we decided we had to show every- body up and made a great comeback in bas- ketball with a 13-2 record and a first place in the Conference. So, we weren’t as bad as they all thought. Over all the Freshmen class of “75” is full of spirit (we’re still competing with the class of “74” for the Spirit Jug) and is going to be the best class Comstock has ever seen!
