SCHOOL LIFE Our 1970 Football Homecoming, was as always, a highlight of the year. With the fun came much hard work on the class floats. Each class after many long hours entered a float in the competition. Along with an inside out day, the farmer day added new variety to the week’s activities. In honor of our cross country team a white socks and tennis shoes day was held. The Powder Puff football game brought lots of laughs as the senior girls won once again. The traditional team honor day found everyone wearing blue and white and carrying pom poms. As the week drew to a close the climax came with the victorious win over Vicksburg IB to 8 and finally the crowning of Nancy Glover and Gary Burnett, our 1970 Football Homecoming King and Queen. 1970 King and Queen 1970 Football Homecoming Winning Seniors Sophomore Float Freshman Float 19 Junior Float Junior cheerleaders seem to be enthusiastic. This comedy told of a crazy, under-ground newspaper editor who falls madly in love with a sassy, Southern, All-American girl. The play was directed by Mrs. Gwen Kulesa and produced by Mr. Michael Stripp. Patti Dantone. “The Star-Spangled Girl. 22 A most dedicated crew: Row 1 l-r K. Krohn. B. Geary. L. Yanderkley Row 2 B. For the second year in a row, mini floats were built by the classes, displayed during the half time of the game and judged. On cowboy and Indian day many hilarious outfits rode into school. A new idea entered into Homecoming this year. Each class decided on something to wear or carry to distinguish themselves from the other classes. It was appropriately called class day. Blue and white day was a hit as usual and the excited air after the crowning of Reggie Franks and Debi Smith, our 1971 Basketball Homecoming King and Queen helped to back our team in their victory over Otsego 96 to 84. As the couples entered into the whirlwind world of magic, they were surrounded by red. pink, and white hearts and flowers. The setting of Long Stay Cut Short is in the Blue Moun- tains of Mississippi. Archie Lee and Baby Doll (E. Longacre and P. Dantone) know that Aunt Rose’s (M. Mitchel) time is coming and nobody in the family wanted to be stuck with taking care of her. Archie and Rahy Doll try to find a way to push Aunt Rose on to another member of the family. Black Comedy Black Comedy, written by Perer Shaffer, is about a young artist P. Mor- rison who is expecting a millionaire (J. Edie) at his apartment to look at his work. Unfortunately the power goes out in his apartment and he is left in the darkness with his fiancee (S. Van- derKley), a lady from down the hall (L. Wollam), a close friend and neighbor just returning from a trip (D. Jackson), and a electrician (B. Gerry), also a former girlfriend (S. Crandall). 35 We’ve Only Just Begun 36 King and Queen Buzz Maartens and Patti Dantone with Princess Becky Belisle and Prince Rick Skippers. “You Can Never Plan The Future By The Past” Graduation 1971 Ken Kik led them through the arch to the end of one life and beginning of another. Roundup Now let me see . . . 45 A great hard-working group in the school is the band. Before school started, they were out practicing for the home football games, under the direction of Phil Morrison, drum major. This year was something special too. The band got new uni- forms with 67 flashy silver buttons, lots of braid, and wide blue stripes on the pants. To top off this extravaganza, they had tall, furry hats like the guards at Buckingham Palace. Once football season was over, the band split into two groups, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Concert Band. Both entertained the school with the two annual con- certs. 1970-71 brought a change in assistant directors. The band was blessed wih two great directors, Mr. Henry Kulesa and Miss Susan Mayberry. The choirs all grew and talent was better than ever. Under the direction of Mr. Jerry Smith, the choirs performed at the Christmas and Spring concerts and the Varsity Choir sang on television and at several area schools. Offense SEASON RECORD Defense In a nutshell the Colts had a pretty good year winning three, losing three, and tying one. The Colts got off to a slow start this year losing the first three games. They then became more organized and matured as they put it all together going into the fourth game of the year as heavy under dogs against Plainwell an undefeated and fourth ranked team in the state and played them to a 0-0 tie. The Colts still high in spirit went on to win the next three in a row, winning their homecoming game against Vicksburg and spoiling Conference rival South Haven’s chances for a title bid. Injuries then helped to thwart the Colt stampede as they dropped the last game of the year to Con- ference champs Allegan. 76 Colts 12 Galesburg-Augusta 34 Colts 12 Paw Paw 18 Colts 12 Otsego 16 Colts 0 Plainwell 0 Colts 16 Vicksburg 8 Colts 12 South Haven 0 Colts 26 Three Rivers 0 Colts 6 Allegan 38 Frosh Football picture not available. With no Seniors on this year’s club everyone will be returning, which is one good note. Having one of the most enthusiastic coaches in the area and the hard working young men that they are, they are looking forward to a better season next year. Varsity Basketball Kneeling—Roy Williams. On top of this the Colts had a very good year. They won six and lost three of their first nine games. From then on they had to win the next nine in a row to stay in contention for the Conference Championship. The Colts then kicked up their heels and through their next eight opponents only to lose the ninth and Championship game to Allegan. The Colts finished fourth in the Wolverine Confer- ence with a record of 4 and 3 and an overall record of 8 and 4, tallying one of the best Colt records since the 50’s. The signif- icance of this record is that these young men came together and racked up six straight victories out of the eight. There were some fine talents displayed by this group of trackmen. An example of this is that there were five school records set and one tied. Breaking these records were Sid Byrd in the long jump, jumping 21’-10”, Dan Erler high jumping 6'-y4 ”, Tom Ellison in the two mile run with a time of 10:48, 880 yard relay team which consisted of Ken Thomas, Reggie Franks, Terry Fields, and Marty Johnson ran off a time of 1:33.6, Mile relay team made up of Gary Bur- nett, Steve Block, Dave Buck and Terry Vandermolen, these run- ners sped to a time of 3:39.6, and freshman Terry Fields tied Corky Elliot’s 1958 100-yard dash record with a time of 10.1. This year’s top scorers were Dan Erler (2OIV2). Terry Fields (104), and Ken Thomas (91). The colts were 4 - 3 in conference play and 14-6 overall finishing second in the Wolverine confer- ence behind South Haven. Midway through the season things seemed to gel together and the colts reeled off 9 wins out of the last 10 games to take a second place in the conference and to win the Greater Kalamazoo Tourney beating Kalamazoo Central 1-0 in the championship game. An added reason for the colts success was the selection of three all conference players. Shortstop Buzz Martens batting .456, first baser Reggie Franks batting .431, and pitcher Kim Kimball batting .403— helped Comstock place three players on the all conference team. Kimball also fanned 172 batters which was a new school record. The colts are looking to another fine season next year with the return of some fine talent under the coaching of Larry Pickett. 90 Dave Blum Varsity manager The Teaherry Shuffle? Senior honor to defend, rah. rah, rah . . . 130 “A day in the life.” This year’s Senior class was the first freshman class in the new high school. They were new to high school just as the building was new to high school students. Since they began here, they’ve seen many changes; a new administration, new faculty members, and new facilities added. Some of this year’s activities included; a first on the class float at Football Homecoming, winning the Powder Puff Football Game, a dance. Spaghetti Dinner, Jr. and Sr. Prom, Senior Banquet, Baccalaureate, and finally Graduation. Our four years here at C.H.S. have been the best of years, and the worst of years, the happiest of years, and the saddest years of our lives. The class of '71 was endowed with many leaders, scholars, athletes, and most of all great, fantastic and beautiful people. 131 “I just washed my hair and I can’t do a thing with it.” “Dedication'' Senior Class Officers: L. This year we found them in the morgue business with our football float . .. which in keeping with our former tradition, took last place AGAIN! Then we took a couple of steps up the ladder of success by making a big hit of Basketball Homecoming; on top of that we broke a record for our float, which took 3rd place instead of 4th, as usually planned. All in all the Junior class made a pretty good go of it, and we hope that the class of ’72 will always be a success! 134 Juniors say: Chew ’em up Colts! In sports our team had success not in the win-loss record, but in that they learned to work as a team and use valuable keys that will help them next year on the Varsity teams. We know they will be an important part of the team. Success was written all over our float competition as we took a 2nd in the Foot- ball Homecoming and a 1st place in Basketball Homecoming. Scholastically speaking, we were on top, have a large percent of our class on the honor roll. The Class of ’73 will remain on top as you can tell by the great number of students we have in our class. Our biggest success was being able to work as a group and as a class and having pride in our class. This pride can be shown to you by our victories in the Spirit Jug contest. We know that we’ll make this next year even better than the past one. 144 Boven. Sandy Bowling, Harold Brierly, Kathie Brockelbank, Terry Brown, Chuck Brown, Sheryl Bucher.
