The Freshman-Sophomore reception was sponsored by this group, and as usual it was a big hit. Miss Winnie Petto was crowned Miss Seaweed of 1961, to cap the evenings festivities. Homecoming gave the Sopho- more class another chance to show their stuff. Though the floats weren't judged, the Sopho- more float would have been hard to beat. STANDING: Norma Snow and Karen DeYoung. The major task each year is the annual Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet, and this year was no exception. The Class of '63 and the advisors Miss Bernadine Mott, Mr. Charles Wegner, and Mr. Frank Ocvirek worked hard. They experienced their difficulties, and had their anixous moments, but in the end, the whole affair was a big success. FOOTBALL The Comstock '11' coached by Wayne Hunt and Tom Lutz found the Kalamazoo Valley Association a bit too rugged for the high-spirited Colts. This was Coach Hunt's first year as head coach of football, and he is looking forward to a better future. The Colts won two and lost six; but nevertheless, the attendance was good, and Com- stock spectators found much excitement. Sophomore, Steve Morford, and senior, Bob Cole, shared scoring honors this year. Tackle, Larry Dopp, was an outstanding lineman. Lack of depth was Colt's biggest problem. The Colts weren't on top in wins this year, but the sportsmanship, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility were the more valuable things learned. Comstock 12. . Comstock 12. . Comstock 6. . This was the first year Mr. O'Neill coached reserve football. He felt that the team played hard inspired football most of the season The outstanding players on the '61 reserve team were backs, Dave Meints, Dewey Cole, Dave Rayman, and Bernie Vallier; and lineman Pat Cooper. The 1961- 62 Comstock Colt's varsity basketball team, under coach, Tom Lutz, concluded the regular season with 8 wins and 8 defeats. The Colts, who were plagued by injuries and illness most of the season, won their first three games before losing a thriller to KVA Co-Champion Bangor, by one point. After a standing of 7-3 for ten games, the Colts went on a five game losing streak before humbling Parchment in the season finale. The Colts also lost their district tournament opener to Otsego 57-45. Co-Captain, Larry Dopp, was selected to the first team of the Kalamazoo Gazette's Greater Kalamazoo All-Stars and also to the All-KVA second team. Co-Captain, Dawayne Heath, received honorable mention on the KVA honor squad. 33 Charity Shot Snitz's Hits Readying for Battle Crowded Isn't It? KVA BASEBALL CHAMPIONS The Comstock Colts, powered their way to an undisputed KVA baseball championship on the strength of the strong right arm of Colt hurler Dawayne Heath and the booming bats of Ron Stinson, Lynn Fisher, John Messenger and Steve Morford. In regular season play, the Colts won 9 while dropping only one to the upset specialists of the KVA, Parchment. The balance of the Colt squad is attested to by the fact that everyone of the first team was selected on the All-KVA team, or received honorable mention. In the KVA Invitational Tournament, Comstock breezed to an easy win, beating Kellogg 6-0 and disposing of Delton in the semi-finals 8-5. This triumph marked the one hundredth game won by a Comstock team coached by Lauren Pickett. The Colts wrapped up the tourney by defeating Mattawan on a nifty no-hitter by Heath and a score of 10-0, which gives them a 12 won and 1 loss record for the season. On the basis of his versatility and pitching ability, Dawayne Heath was honored by being selected on the All-Kalamazoo Area team. The Colts also finished third in a triangular meet with Kellogg and Galesburg. While the above record isn't too impressive, there were many fine individual performances such as senior, high hurdles star, Bob Cole's record setting performance in the KVA track meet of 15.7. Bob Lyons also took KVA honors in the 440. In points earned this year, Bob Cole topped the list with 79 for the season, while Bob Lyons had 35 1 2, vaulter, Terry McMeeken had 30 1 2 and sprinter, Jim Flegal had 22. The record this year isn't too impressive at 2 victories and 6 defeats, the victories coming over Parchment and Kellogg. At the Regional class B golf tourney, this year's linksmen pared 100 strokes from last year's totals. Graduation will not effect the squad, which showed steady improvement last spring. Coach Fred Osmer is expecting big things from the squad next year. DOWN THE FAIRWAY Coach Fred Osmer': Linksmen GIRLS’ TENNIS The Girls' Tennis team split their unofficial season, beating Portage and Galesburg and dropping decisions to the Rams and Vicksburg. Elsie Boer and Joanne Liggett along with the Wilbon sisters, should form a sold foundation on which to build this season. BACK ROW, L. to R.: E. Boer, M. Werner, N. Snow, J. Dubbeld, J. Liggett. FRONT ROW: J. Bom, B. Wilbon, B. Crawford, L. Wilbon. The Colt 'Racket Squad' won 3 and lost 10 in dual match competition this past spring. The Colts defeated Otsego, Vicksburg, and Parchment. They placed fourth in the KVA tennis tournament and last in the regionals, however, only one starter was lost through graduation and this should prove very helpful to coach Kenneth Adams next season. BOYS’ TENNIS 43 GAA The Girls' Athletic Association under the guidance of Miss Jean Roberts is one of the more active or- ganizations at Comstock. The GAA is a social organization which is dedi- cated to the principles of wholesome fun and good sportsmanship. In order to raise money, record dances following home games were sponsored, includ- ing the social event of the fall season, Home- coming. The reward for all this labor was new uniforms for the Varsity squad, which did much to keep the morale at a high peak. The three girls who attended camp, Joan Dunlap, Wanda Coffman, and Sandy Hollestelle are justly proud of the second place trophy which they won for all-round excellence at Camps All-American. On behalf of the student body, we of the Corral staff thank these people for a job well done. ♦ 48 The highlight of the fall social season was the Football Home- coming at which Larry Dopp and Gail Sackett were crowned king and queen. Following the game, Larry and Gail presided over the evening's festivities. HOMECOMING With a few feet of chicken wire and two thousand napkins, the seniors set out to build their class float. The night before the game, the rains came, and the napkins went. The entire float was rebuilt the day of the game. A dashing blue and white Tro- jan horse was presented by the freshman class as one of the four floats in the half-time display. 50 The 1962 carnival, sponsored by the trip club, was a big suc- cess. Booths of all kinds filled the various rooms of the school. A marriage booth, leg show, twist room, and baseball throw were only a few of the popular ones. A dance and floor show followed the big event. Don Dor- nan and Renate Fawley, senior class candidates were crowned king and queen. CARNIVAL THE CURIOUS SAVAGE’’ 3 Act Comedy Guests Florence . . This year the council finished revision of its constitution and spent con- siderable time and effort to get better working relations between the student body and the administration. Through the efforts of the Student Council, the much talked of student lounge became an accomplished fact. The General Motors Previews of Progress presented its show under the auspices of the council and the Spring prom was sponsored by this organization. 60 BACK ROW, L to R: S. Holestelle, J. Soudek, L. Replacing the Class trip this year is a new organization, the Trip Club, which was formed this year to give those juniors and seniors who desired to take trip the means of financing such an endeavor. The Club this year sold Christmas trees, held a Hi-Fi dance and car-wash. The Trip Club also sponsored and received all the pro- ceeds from the annual school carnival. The Varsity club is composed of varsity award winners in the Comstock high school athletic program. Under the capable leadership of Lauren Pickett, the club has been one of the more active organizations in school. This year the club purchased new spot- lights, a new flag and pennants of the various KVA league schools for the Gymnasium. Those girls are so attractive and have such friendly, pleasant manners.” They’re talking about Lucy, who started working for Michigan Bell right out of high school. She was trained by friendly, understanding supervisors and today she’s proud of her work; enjoys a fine salary, regular wage increases, and many new friends. Lucy was delighted from the very first by the clean, pleasant surroundings, by the regularly scheduled mid- morning and midafternoon breaks” for relaxing in comfortable lounge rooms, and by the opportunities for advancement. Isn’t that kind of job worth going after? Then why not get in touch with us—perhaps there’s a telephone job for you. We’ll be happy to talk with you about the interesting work at Michigan Bell.
