IBS mm THE CORRAL OF COMSTOCK HIGH SCHOOL, COMSTOCK, MICHIGAN Published every year since 1926 Vol. 34, 1960 CONTENTS Administration Seniors Classes Organizations Activities Sports Advertising A Salute to Our Community . . . This yearbook is dedicated to the men and women who make up the community of Comstock. They have provided us with all that is essential in developing a well-round- ed personality. Their taxes have built our school plant and paid the salaries of the in- structors who toil to prepare us to face the challenge that the future holds. Their pro- gressive attitude and keen interest in school affairs has made the Comstock school system something to be proud of. It is to these fine people, from every walk of life, that we dedicate this, the 1960 Corral. The Student Body Comstock High School . . . Comstock! The Kalamazoo River winds slowly through Comstock. Superintendent’s Message Seniors of 1960: You are about to become alumnae of Comstock High School, and will join many thousand other grad- uates in a new and more adult phase of living. Some of you are going on to school, for others this marks the end of formal education. But the process of learn- ing will not stop for any of you. Life itself is a very effective, although sometimes painful, teacher. We are confident thatyou will do well in Life's School. ” We believe that you will meet the chal- lenges and problems that will confront your generation. We have faith that you will help make this a better world for all mankind. Seniors, we congratulate you on the accomplish- ment of earning you high school diploma. Your teachers and your parents are proud of you. We wish you every success and happiness in the future. George A. Long SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Office Staff Mrs. Shirley Meints and Mrs. Vera Miller form an efficient duo in the Superintendent's office. 8 Art Middleton, President; Celer Stafford, Trustee; Beulah Hollestelle, Secretary; Thomas Boven, Treasurer; Vern Norwood, Trustee; Louis Ruhs, Administrative Assistant; George A. Long, Superintendent. The Superintendent’s Office in the Central Building is the nerve center of the Comstock School System. Here, once a month, the School Board meets to decide issues which affect the youth of Com- stock. Here a highly efficient staff tends to the business of running a modern school system. Mrs. Vera Miller handles the momentous correspondence. The accounts for the various school clubs and organizations are in the capable hands of Mrs. Shirley Meints. Acting as Executive Assistant and Purchasing Agent is Mr. Louis Ruhs. Superintendent George A. Long as Chief Administrator supervises the work of all school employees. PrincipaFs Message I960 ushers in a new decade filled with great promise in the fields of scientific and industrial growth. It could mean we are in for the highest standard of living ever achieved by men. or it may mean we could destroy ourselves, either by use of weapons or by decay of the moral, spiritual, and physical virtues. Scientific achievement seems to be outstripping man's ability to cope with it. Our 1960 graduates will be caught in this dilemaand their efforts will have to be turned to the social advancements if they are going to continue to enjoy the bountiful freedoms offered by our great nation. There are some great thinkers who feel we are rapidly becoming a bread and circus nation. If this is true our decline and fall is as certain as was that of the Roman Empire. The 1960 graduating class and all classes must meet this challenge by work, sacrifice, confidence and independence. They must recognize the right and strength of an individual and fight to keep the individual a free and dynamic being. Graduates of 1960 I am certain you will meet the challenge before you and with the help of God you will prosper, succeed and find happiness. I wish you well. Mr. David McDowell leaves the halls of Com- stock, following the completion of this school year. For his help and cooperation, we of the Corral Staff thank him and we are joined by the entire student body in wishing him well. GUIDANCE Counselors . . . Confidants . . . Friends . . . Mr. Louis Ruhs, in addition to his activities as Assistant Superintendent and Purchasing Agent for the Comstock School System also handles, with the aid of Miss Jean Roberts, the testing and Guidance Program here at Comstock. Mr. Ruhs and Miss Roberts help us chart our course of study to take fullest advantage of our aptitudes and abilities. Though not a Counselor, Mrs. Doris Burgess, Principal's Secretary, is a friend and confidant of faculty members and students alike. Serving the student body in a triple role as counselor, teacher, and friend, Jean Roberts per' forms all three with equal ease. FACULTY ROLAND BURGESS Chemistry, Physics JULIE BERTCH English. STUDENT COUNCIL A government of the students, by the students, and for the stu- dents was again shown in the work of the Student Council this year. The Council sponsored the annual Carnival, Christmas Dance, and elections for next years officers, all of which were successful. Our Student Council also participated in the activities of the Region 5 Student Council Association and the Kalamazoo Inter-School Student Councils. The four officers attended the .state meeting at the University of Michigan in the fall and a delegation of members was sent to Niles for the Region 5 spring conference. Both the banquet and prom were well at- tended. COMSTOCK VARSITY FOOTBALL 1959 SEASON RESUME The Comstock '11' coached by Larry Pickett and Wayne Hunt didn't compile a winning season, but the Colts did provide a good many thrills for the local grid fans. The Colts suffered several setbacks during the season, and one, before the season even got underway. Senior Bruce Cummins, who was to have been the starting quarter- back was sidelined by surgery. Hard luck seemed to plague the Colts as Leonard Born, promising Sophomore back, suffered a broken shoulder in the second game of the season and was out the remainder of the year. Lack of reserve strength played a major role in the defeat of the Comstock ’ll1. Many boys, due to lack of depth, were forced to go all the way, both on offense and defense. The Colts took their licks this year but have profited much from the lumps and believe that with the help of the reserve crop that will be moving up, that the tables may be turned on some of their opponents.
