He was a man who, though over-burdened with local and state problems of education, found time to become acquainted with many of us and to discuss with us our problems of growing up. In his quiet but firm way he inspired us to new heights and encouraged those who were in need. No other person has lived his profession with more vigor and enthusiasm. He believed so sincerely in the importance of a good educational program that he gave his all - yes, even his life for it. We know that his life and accomplishments will have an everlasting in- fluence on our success. In deep gratitude we offer this yearbook as a small monument to a great educator. 4 SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE It is always with a mixed feeling of pride and sorrow that we approach the end of another school year. Proud that another group of young people have prepared themselves to assume their places in the world; sorry that we no longer will have our seniors who have worked for and with us these many years. But that is the law of progress; old places and faces must continually be replaced. As the graduating class begins the task of maintaining and improving our great country, other students will carry on the work they have so nobly begun. So good-by and good luck. May you have all the success and hap- piness you rightly deserve. BOARD of EDUCATION STANDING Ben Murrey Superintendent Vern Norwood Secretary Celer Stafford T rustee SEATED Mary Bell Trustee Arthur Middleton President Thomas Bover T reasurer 6 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As each one of you, in the graduating class of 1957, leaves your school, I would like to have you take this thought with you: Every student has a creative spark. The development of this spark is your most sacred task. This spark makes us truly human, gives continuity to existence, and gives hope for the future. What it is we do not know, for ultimately man remains a secret to himself. Man sees himself only in manifestation not as an essence. This spark indicates that nothing is impossible if we have the necessary patience and in- telligence. THANK YOU” We the class of 1957 wish to thank Mr. Young for all he has done for us. He has been our counselor and our guide for the past four years. During our freshman year he helped us plan our whole high school course. Later when we had problems in school he was always ready to counsel us. In our senior year he has helped us plan for the future, whether it be college, the armed services, ora career. Our life has been made richer for having known him. 7 AGNES CASEY MILTON CHRISTEN RUTH CLEMENTZ MARJORIE COOK English 7th Grade Assistant Coach Librarian 7th Grade FACULTY ESTHER LAURIE FELLOWS FRIEND JOHN PAUL FRITZ HARRIS Commercial Commercial Co-op Training 7th Grade Retailing GEORGE HOEHNE 8 8th Grade 8th Grade Band Industrial Arts MELICENT LENG 7th Grade BERNADINE MOTT Mathematics Science JAN VERHAGEN Social Science THOMAS BLANCHE LUTZ MARSHALL Driver Training 8th Grade Basketball Coach KENNETH MC CARTNEY Art Music FACULTY LAUREN JEAN PICKET ROBERTS Physical Education Physical Education Football Coach Baseball Coach LOUIS RUHS 8th Grade Tennis Coach CHARLES GERALDINE WAGNER WELCH Industrial Arts Home Economics ELLEN WILLITS English Latin 9 We wish to thank the Bus Drivers and Custodians for all they have done for our class during our years in high school. 1C MR. JACK PORTER MR. ROBERT JONES IN APPRECIATION Our thanks go to Mr. Porter and Mr. Jones. These two men have been our inspiration since September, 1953. We were young, frightened freshmen, struggling to push our heads through the crust of a new world, high school, when we first met Mr. Porter and Mr. Jones as our sponsors. Since that time, they have helped us become better students and citizens. We, the Class of 1957, wish to express our sincere gratitude to these two men who have been our guiding light for the past four years. Because Of their interest in us both as individuals and as a class, we have had a successful and happy high school life. 12 NANCY PETERSON “Laughing eyes and flashing smile, charming ways and lots of style.” Hi-Teens 3,4; Owlette 4; Annual 4; Class Vice-President 4; Drum Ma- jorette 3,4; Majorette 1,2; Tennis 1, 2; DAR Pilgrim 4; Play 3; Forensics 1. Those girls are so attractive and have such friendly, pleasant manners. They’re talking about Lucy, who started working for Michigan Bell right out of high school. She was trained by friendly, understanding supervisors and today she’s proud of her work: enjoys a fine salary, regular wage increases, and many new friends. Lucy was delighted from the very first by the clean, pleasant surroundings, by the regularly scheduled mid- morning and midafternoon “breaks for relaxing in comfortable lounge rooms, and by the opportunities for advancement.
