They are, Barbara Berglund, Lawrence Bernier, Carl Hoime, june Olson and Melvin Taasaas. Two of these have not been with us all the time: they are Lawrence Bernier and june Olson. Lawrence left during the seventh and eighth grades to go to St. Benedict, but returned in the ninth grade. june left during the first year to go to St. Paul, but re- turned the following year. Roger Corneliussen was with us during the first year, but moved to Rustad where he completed his grade school education. Three of the remaining five: Carol, Laverne and Arlene Taasaas moved to Montana. The two left were Donna jean Blilie and George Hagen jr., who left us during the fifth and sixth grades respectively. Believe it or not, Comstock High is still standing. The sun has set and the whole school is lit up. From the gym, there comes noises of all sorts. What's going on? ? ? ? It is a reunion of the class of '49. Who's here? ? ? ? Everyone who had the privilege of graduating from Comstock High School with that one and only class of '49, Keep reading and you will find out what became of each during these twenty years. Grace Olsen is employed as a teacher of English at Colfax, North Dakota. She enjoys her work very muchg but she hopes to retire soon. QNot because of dee! Donald Koester is one of those big strapling dude ranch owners from the West. Through some trick of fate he also learned to become a bullfighter. It seems impossible, but with him anything is possible. Beverly Brakke believe it or not, works in Carneige Hall. Though she is a woman she has gained much respect in the music world for her faultless piano tuning. Thomas Walker is now head cartoonist for Walt Disney in Hollywood. Sylvia just happens to be his chief assistant. How this came about no one will ever know. Roger Corneliussen is a camera technician for the Eastrnan Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. He has just received a bonus for inventing the camera which takes pictures without a film. Barbara Berglund was promoted to head nurse in the psycopathic ward at Fergus Falls. She takes to her work like a duck takes to water. Larry Quiggle is one of the more sensible members of our class. He settled down on a farm near Comstock and is a dirt farmer. He raises dirt of the finest quality. Marylin Ness is a dress designer at Madame La Fluers's exclusive dress shop. She not only designs them, but she also models them. Lawrence Bernier or Swede is a test pilot at Boeing Aircraft. He and Carl Hoime work together. Carl builds them and Swede tears them apart. Melvin Taasaas left Comstock and took up barbering at the University of Minnesota. He has given hundreds of people a close shave in more ways than one. june Olson is Home Economics teacher at Preston, Minnesota. She says it's everything she thought it to be. Arthur Mathison is the chief clown of Ringling Brothers Circus. He has made such a smashing hit that his boss claims that there will never be another Art. Vern Quinnild has been working for fifteen years in the baseball field. He, like the rest of the class, has made a smashing success. Next time you see the Yankees play, ask for the assistant water boy. This will be the fate of our class. We hope that the other classes that follow will be as successful. lAnyone who takes this seriously is absolutely without a doubt without sane mind.J 12 t n I :mv MW Zu N J! RN. ,lf ,..-5? 6 1 Ki . Since it was our plan we decided we had better put on the first program. When we will get it done is the 564. question. I certainly hope we get it done before this comes out in the annual. On October 16, 1948, we officially welcomed the freshmen into C.H.S. We pooled all our ideas and gave it to them one day. How about it, freshmen? Did you have enough? To take care of our business for the year we chose the following officers. President ..... . . Ralph Mathison Vice-President . . . . Kenneth Reitan Secretary ..... . . . Pearl Walker Treasurer . . . . Ervin Engesetter Freshmen News aefxvfxxfawfaewefx-wrxfwawa-arsrvwfaef The day for which we had long been waiting in anxious anticipation had finally come. That was the day that we would seat ourselves in the spacious assembly at C.H.S. Now that we think back - oh, how foolish we were. The sophomores were so kind as to welcome us to the school. They in- vited us to a little party in the evening, where we were treated with royalty. They gave us the wonderful sensation of feeling cats eyes and worms. Then to show their esteem for us they anointed our feet with honey. They were also thoughtful enough to blindfold us during the ceremony so the light wouldn't hurt our eyes. We are waiting anxiously for next year to repay the kindness. We presented them with a return party at Christmas, and we enjoyed that party more than theirs. Our class officers are as follows: President ..... .... R oger Livdahl Vice-President . . ..... Glynice Eggum Secretary .... . . Thomas Gilbertson Treasurer . . . . . Gordon Brakke 16 L lhjf: .' We have two girls and seven boys in the fourth grade and five boys alone in the fifth grade, making a total of fourteen in our room. We like to stress good citizenship in school, so each weekjanitors help keep our room neat and well arranged. We begin each day with a pledge of allegiance to our country, or with singing some national anthem. During the year the fifth grade received mail from every state in the United States- descriptive literature and maps. The fourth grade enjoyed Gopher Tales , the history of Minnesota. News comes each week in the Weekly Reader, a paper written on the grade level. Once a week most of the children go for one hour of religious instruction in the E,L.C. Church. Our room had parties for Halloween, Christmas, and Valentines Day. All grade children helped in presenting a one act operetta, When Christmas Comes,' to which parents and friends were invited. Our new music books are The American Singer. Everyone likes to try to sight read new songs from these beautiful books. We appreciate several new library books. One of our favorites has been jored's Island. , Upper Grade News vssnrxawwrarwswrtwktfe-vxawux Grades 6,7, and 8 have an enrollment of twenty-one, with seven in each grade. The boys outnumber the girls though- two to one. Each grade organized a club. The eighth grade call themselves, The Centenial Circ1e. Their president is Ronald Berglundg Vice-President, Donald Hoymeg Secretary, Carol Shellitog and Treasurer, Muriel Engesetter. They chose as their motto Work and Win. The seventh grade is the Gopher C1ub. Their motto: Be Kind Be kind and be gentle, To those who are old, For dearer is kindness, And better is gold. Sydney Eggum is president, james Nugent is Vice-President, Sybil is Secretary, and Royal Ness is Treasurer. Willing Work is the name of the sixth grade club. Their motto is, Never give up- God is faithful. Orland Bye is President, Carl Taasaas, Vice-President: Wallace Ness, Secretary, Larry Brandt, Treasurer. Some of the projects our clubs participate in are: giving programs for the different holidays, keeping our bulletin board interesting, attractive and changed frequently, caring for the many beautiful plants that were given us, developing hobbies, contributing to the junior Red Cross, March of Dimes, and Crippled Childrens Organization, corresponding with boys and girls in foreign countries, and making Minnesota Centennial Scrap books. ' We participated in the Christrnas Operetta. The sixth graders enjoy their new Geography books. We received some new library books this year. We all want to read them. 12 o'c1ock seems to be the best time of the day. How we do enjoy our school lunch program. 19 rimary gracfea 1 hh Z0 351 Grade .E Harlan HOYTHG. Primary Grade Room News Ilwlvlrllvlvkwlvlvlvlfflrllvlvlrirflrlhllrilflkllfllfrlrllvlrlllllwlvlrvkrkiklll For the past two years there have been twice as many boys as girls enrolled in the primary grade room, but at last we have exactly an equal number of each. Our school year started off with a bang, thirteen of our desks were occupied by first graders. That first day of school we were so happy to discover some playground equipment, a big, shiny, new slide, teeter totters, swings and a bar. We surely made good use of them until the cold weather came. Even the upper grades seemed to get a thrill out of that slide. Now we are waiting for spring so that we can try them out again. This year we go to the music room for our singing every day. Mrs, Andersgn is our teacher. Some of us are taking piano lessons after school too. Every child in the elementary grades took part in the operetta Christmas Comes. Harvey, Harlen, Gerald, and Larry represented gingerbread boys. Diane, Emmy Lou, Virginia, Sandra, Lois jean, Joyce, Kathleen, and Carolyn were Christrnas packages. Lorren was a scribe and Stephen was a shepherd. All the of us sang in the chorus. Many of our parents and friends came to see and hear us. One of the nicest things about school this year is the hot lunch at noon. At first recess time, nice smells begin coming from the kitchen, It makes us so hungary. Then we guess what the cooks are making and can hardly wait to see if we were right. Sometimes they have special surprises for us. Everyone of us has to learn to drink milk, and some of us now can eat every vegetable. We try to belong to the Clean Platter C1ub. We have had many birthday parties this year, and, oh, what very fine treats the children have brought! One day we had two parties. That was when Greta and Gary, the twins, were six years old. We make pretty cards for the children who have birthdays . We had Halloween and Christmas parties too. At Thanksgiving time, the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade room invited us upstairs to see a program. They even served lunch, and, of course, there is nothing we like better than ice cream. Now we are waiting for Valentines Day. We have been going to church for religious instruction every Tuesday afternoon. The second and third graders have received brand new number books this year. Also, we have some new books forour reading table. Last fall Miss Strand brought two lovely plants for our room. One grew too big for the window sill so we put it on our reading table and called it our tree. The good workers, who finish their jobs, have the privilege of sitting under the tree and looking at pictures. Cute Sayings 4-an-1-awww-mvrrwraerxws Mrs. B.--Gene, you must eat your pea soup. Z5 Basketball News frwowrarakarwrakaocxssara-:humoral-ara: As this is being written the '48 and '49 basketball season is swiftly and successfully drawing to a close. Looking back it seems to have been a very successful season considering the fact that most of the plays were substitutes on the A team last year except for Lawrence Bernier who was on the first five. We have won 14 games and lost 2., but have two home games left to play. For six of our players, Lawrence, Vern, Art, Carl, Mel, and Roger, it is the last season on the Comet roster. This year in the Christrnas Tournament held here, Dilworth defeated Kindred while we triumphed over Rothsay, In the consolation game Rothsay defeated Kindred. In the championship game we defeated Dilworth to win the tournament trophey. The UB team this year has a very good record, having lost only 3 games and still having two left to play this season. The starting lineup was as follows: Myron, and Clayton as forwards, Edin and Gordon as guards and Charlie as center. Alternating at center were Dean N, and Roger C, The reserves were Charles Askegaard, Richard Koester, Earl Thompson, Orlen Valan, Tommy Gilberson, Roger Livdahl, Ronald Berglund, Donald Hoyme, and Robert Brandt. Ice cream sundaes and pop was served in the school cafeteria. We are thinking about having a skating party at the river, but definite plans have not, as yet, been made. We hope to have several more parties before theyear is over. Mixed Chorus :warms-:mars-:xxx-arssrarao: In mixed chorus this year the boys have music every Tuesday and Thursday. The girls have music Monday and Wednesday and on Friday we have mixed chorus. Mrs. L. Anderson, of Moorhead, teaches both classes. Every year we have attended a music festival in Moorhead. We are again planning to attend the Spring Music Festival, April 29. The songs that the mixed chorus will be singing this year are: Now Let Every Tongue Adore Thee, Oh Lord Have Mercy, and Fireflies. The boys will sing Landsighting, and the girls will sing ln a Persian Market. Student Council arawwkdvkvkdfakxwwkdfwvr-kart: After several discussions between Mr. Balderstone and the student body in regards to keeping order during the noon hour, a possible solution was finally decided upon. On February second the following plan materialized: one student from each class was selected to compose a Student Council. Each week for the remaining year the Council would appoint three students to serve on duty for that week. The Council consists of the following: Arthur Mathison, Seniorg Catherine Haugen, juniorg Norma Ness, Sophomoreg and Roger Livdahl, Freshman. Catherine Haugen was elected President of the Council. 29 . f ,f ii .,,,x ff f df f ZX f - f s 1 V Q x ' v Q f 4?N3?::., ff SJW? 7m What would happen if ---- A week never came to an end? Shirley j. couldn't blush? The boys treated the girls nice just one noon hour? Pearl didn't have a desk in front of her for her every day visitor How about it, Vern? The juniors agreed on something once in a while? We, the student body, use our minds instead of our muscles ? Mail wasn't private. How about it Marilyn and Sylvia ? Barbara didn't have a drive way? Grace could make up her mind between Moorhead and Sabin? Donald didn't always get the front seat in the bus ? The boys used their music ability in chorus instead of in the English room? The Seniors got their book reports in on time? Swede stayed in school one whole day? Comstock didn't play basketball? Gordy couldn't tease somebody? Glynice wore bobby-socks to school? Ervin could drive without going in the ditch more than once in a night? Every day wasn't a day of celebration. How about it jr? You too Barb ? Mr. Balderstone couldn't walk so quiet around the halls ? Miss Strand wasn't busy doing something for some one else? Darlene E. didn't have so many clothes ? Roger L. couldn't look over his glasses ?
