Lucinda Hobbs prepared for the first novice tournament at Long Beach State College. 1969-70 showed outstanding achievement by the Speech team. The team consisted of one-hundred and fifty members who competed in various speech events. The team was rated number six among speakers from the top thirty-five schools in the area by the National Forensic League, In the largest speech tournament of the year, the team defeated twenty-seven schools that belonged to the Southern Debate League. It also remained number one in the city of Compton. The enthusiasm of the students placed speech team events among the most exciting events on Compton's campus.
