The highlights of the year was the con- ference at Los Angeles Pierce College. The AWS sponsored such activities as, the Bloodmobile, a picnic, and a fashion show. Victoria Nelson (President) 73 Phi Rho Pi Last year Compton College ' s Forensic Team rated ninth in the nation. This year ' s squad was even stronger. Doris Wil- liams won the 1967 National Women ' s oratory championship, and James Harris placed fourth in oral interpretation. This year ' s squad, led by Dons Williams, con- tinued its winning ways. With the assistance of its coach, Fredric Broder, the team returned from each tournament with trophies and certificates; breaking all previous records. The Usherettes was leaders in service and participation. First semester they won the trophy for leaders in service points. Victoria Nelson Joann Willi? 76 Yvonne Hopwood Jimmie Levy The women participated in activities on campus and sponsored the Christmas Dance, bake sales, Hawaiian Day, and Tom Sawyer Day. The Usherettes serve the community in such charitable ac- tivities by, participating in the Danny Thomas Teenagers ' March for the St. Jude Hospital. Also the Usherettes tutored youngsters in the elementary schools in Compton. This club has served on campus since 1933 as a service club. Its purpose is to serve the school, to promote good school spirit, and to uphold tradition. She is very active on campus. She was the Vice-President of the Usherettes, and Organization Editor of the Dar-U-Gar year- book. Miss Watts attended Compton High School, and was a member of various clubs as well as the Honor Society for two years there. Randolph Stephen, a foreign student, is a sophomore. Born in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, South America; he is the third of six children. During his high school career he attended Tutorial High and Queen ' s College. Randolph Stephen and Ingrid Watts were chosen as the California Junior College As- sociation ' s Man and Woman of the year during their Third Annual Conference. They also received $50 each, as well as certifi- cates. These two outstanding members of Comp- ton ' s student body were chosen on the basis of scholarship, college activities, community service, statement of purpose, and an oral interview. 83 David Hildyard was a member of the Royal Air Force from 1940 to 1946; during this time he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, be- stowed upon Officers and Warrant Officers of the Royal Air Force for acts of gallantry when flying in active operations against the enemy. After the close of World War II, he entered the Foreign Service. He has served as First Secretary in Montevideo, and in Madrid, and as Her Maj- esty ' s Consul in Mexico City. In 1965 he was appointed Head of the Economic Relations Department of the Foreign Office, a post which he holds today, also Alternate Repre- sentative in the General Assembly and the Secu- rity Council. Hildyard is a graduate of Christ Church, Oxford, and is a Champion of the Order of Saint Mi- chael and Saint George.
