Craig Thomas, Compton College director and principal ot Compton Union High School. comes to us this year with a distinguished record and a fresh, new leadership. He uickl won su ort ot both students and Cl Y PP taculty. He worked to keep as many dratt-eligible college students as possible in school. He is proud ot inaugurating an over-all curriculum evaluation committee ot the taculty. He has taught in Oceanside, Long Beach City College: was supervisor ot publications tor Long Beach City Schools, and director ot public rela- tions tor Occidental College. He came to Comp- ton College from a position as dean ot instruction tion, Arizona State College at Flagstatt. His educational record includes an A.B. from Stanford University and an M.A. and Ed.D. trom the University of Southern California. He is active in Phi Delta Kappa, Rotary and local service groups. Deputy Superintendent Mr. Franklin C. Hem hill, deputy superintendent ot both Compton Coliicge and Compton Union High School districts. entered upon a new period ot service this year. After 20 years as assistant superintendent and director ot high schools, he was promoted to deputy superintendent ot both newly-instituted districts. Teacher, author, administrator, veteran, news- aper man, civic leader, service club executive- his experience is wide and deep. His achievements would till more space than is here available. He earned his BA. degree trom Colorado College ot Education, and his MA. trom the University ot Southern Calitornia. He has taught in Wyoming and tor the past 27 years in California. A FRIENDLY CHAT around a tree-well in the Union patio finds Superintendent McComb b ze with, left to right, Dick the ree Diclc l-lensel, Maxine Coos, and Paul Superintendent and President Stepping up trom the iob ot business t th combined districts to the anager o e perintendency, Dr. Stuart McComb was ced with an unprecedented situation: he d to reorganize the 6-4-4 into the 6-3-3-2 lang he had to plan tor two new senior gh schools and two junior high schools d a new iunior college plant. This meant . cal bond elections: cooperation with the Dr. Stuart Mccomb ate Department ot Education: and get- ng the support ot district voters. All this was complicated by wartime conditions, intlation. and talling enrollment in the iunior college. That he has surmounted these ditticulties and still lcept his good nature and main- tained his educational toresight is a tribute to both man and educator. His letter to the boards recommending an increased salary schedule tor teachers is being used widely throughout the state as a model torward-looking educational policy, Dr. McComb received his BA. degree trom Arizona State College lTempel, his M.S, and Ed.D. degrees trorn the University ot Southern Calitornia. He began teaching in a two-room country school in the Arizona mountains in l929. He has served as a teacher and administrator in Arizona, Colorado. and in Calitornia. Coming to Compton in l946, atter three years in the U.S. Navy, he served as assistant superintendent in charge ot business ot the Compton City Schools, and in the same capacity in the Compton Union High School and Junior College District. In July, I95O, he succeeded Dr. Scott Thompson as superintendent ot both Compton Union High School and Junior College districts and president ot Compton College.
