Roosevelt nompson iuaiies Alaroa ROOSEVELT THOMPSON l2nd Place Winner 1971 Leo Pot- ishman Scholarship Vocal Solo Contest.l Sing your way to Europe. Yes it is possible and that is just what Roosevelt Thompson has done. Last summer Roosevelt won over 82 other applicants, a scholarship from the American Institute for Foreign Studies, in connection with the Fort Worth Public Schools' summer abroad programs. For four exciting weeks Roosevelt studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Then he went on tours of Salzburg, Paris and Rome, seeing operas and music festivals. Roosevelt, at the age of eleven, was the first member of his race to be accepted into the Texas Boys' Choir. Unfortunately, he had only been a member for one year when his voice changed. This kept him from the European tour at that time, so this was a trip of which he had long dreamed of making. Roosevelt is a soloist in the Como High School Chorus and also his church choir. It was his choral teacher, lVlrs. Jewel F. Kelly, who suggested that he apply for the scholarship. Prior to her suggestions, Roosevelt had not even thought of applying. When asked how he felt about the trip, our European Sum- mer Student remarked: lVlarvelous, educational, and simply wonderful!
