A teacher was employed in the person of Mrs. Lucinda Baker. This first school had an enrollment of eleven pupils, some under age and others of age. Among those first pupils was Mrs. Ruby G. Crawford Jones, who is currently employed as a teacher at Como Elementary School. Mrs. Baker taught for two years. Due to the' decrease in enrollment the school closed. , A second term was begun in 1917 with Mrs. Tennessee Smith lthe mother of our own Teacher-Counselorl, Jenkins E. Smith. The followingyear 1918, Mrs. Pearl Walker Connor was called as head teacher. After World War l, the community started to grow. As more people moved into the community, there was a need for a bigger and better school building. Mr. R. N. Riddles was county superintendent at that time, and a building with two rooms was built on the southeast corners of Faron and Bonnell Streets. Mrs. Gertrude Wilherson-Starners was made head teacher with an assistant, Mrs. Geneva Carrington. Later by Mrs. Jessie Raliegh, and Mrs. Ruth A. Greenwood who recentlyvretired from Como Elementary School joined the staff. Mrs. M. L. Paterson came to the school as a teacher in 1931. The school continued to grow. A custodian was needed. Men of the com- munity had helped supply coal for heating and keeping the building and grounds clean. This task was too much. A full time custodian, Mr. John Adkins was employed in 1933. The community continued to grow and so did the school. Other teachers were added. ln 1935, the school had outgrown its site. A new one was purchased and the school moved to Libbey, Goodman, Horne and Holloran Streets. In 1936, Mr. J. Martin Jacquet, retiring principal at Dunbar High School was hired and remained for 10 years. Mr. Oscar M. Williams suc- ceeded him in 1946. The present brick building was erected in 1950. Mr. Wilbur H. Byrd, current principal succeeded Mr. Williams in 1967. The community has continued to grow. Now the school which started out as a one-room, frame building, one teacher, eleven pupil school, has grown into two separate schools with an enrollment of over 1,900 pupils. However, this year is historical, indeed, because 1971 marks the last year that there will be a high school in this area. The beloved Como Junior-Senior High School is scheduled to close as such and in its place will be Como Middle School with grades six through eight. Q 'ANC 3,5 t 1 if 4 Q L w iF 2 . Q Superintendent? One of the pleasures of being superintendent is to know and to work with students. Those from Como with Whom I have come in contact through the United High School Council and other groups have certainly made an outstanding impression upon me. Their intelligence, cooperativeness and ability are a credit to your school. I am sure they are typical of the quality of students We find at Como High School. On behalf of the entire Como Junior-Senior High School Family, l bring greetings to you . . . our parents, alumni and friends. The yearbook staff has appropriately chosen the theme, PRELUDE TO A FINALE, as this marks the final year of this school as COMO JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH. However, l would like to add a sub-theme, PRELUDE TO PROGRESS. . .as this is not the end, but the beginning . . . the beginning of COMO MIDDLE SCHOOL. Realistically, nothing will change as far as the parental sup- port, goodwill and general attitude of the community toward the school. As a middle school, we still need, and WANT the wonderful cooperation that you, our parents, friends and alumni have so willingly given us in the past. The doors of COMO MIDDLE SCHOOL, as were the doors of COMO JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, will always be open to YOU. COMO JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL has had a short, memorable and glorious history. Our graduates have repre- sented us well in their various fields of endeavor. The school served its purpose well in its day, but since the past is a pro- logue to the future, let us look ahead with open minds and hearts to the success of COMO MIDDLE SCHOOL. BARBOU R Counselor GUIDANCE SERVICES Since 1944, the Fort Worth Public Schools, with board of education approval, have had an organized guidance program in the secondary schools. This program grew out of an increased realization that pupils differ physically, mentally, and emotionally. Guidance services were built around two basic functions: the DISTRIBUTIVE FUNCTION which aims to place pupils into activities of schools and courses offered on the basis of ability, interest, and ambition, and the ADJUSTIVE FUNCTION which aims to give pupils individual assistance in school. Counselors feel that the individual pupil is of prime importance, and his development to the limit of his potentiality is our chief aim. It is our purpose to make all resources of the schools available to pupils in order that they may learn, primarily by their own efforts, to make wise decisions and to solve problems independently. Assistance is provided by our program of guidance services. afeieria anal Custodial Personne ' fix l,, 'U Q is fi fs ' ' fl I tw :YM X Sinn, A , f. l fwfwx. -1 -f:-:.::i::,seeWgl, .,,.f,.e: .Mr-f1 ,:aa' 1e1eafm::::f.-f,,,.,.. This program has as its aim: to give the young adult the opportunity to seek, obtain and advance in a position of employment related to home economics. The student achieves this aim through supervised on-the-job training and related class- room instruction. Small classes with expended visitation time allowed to the teacher-coordinator achieve the close relationship between school, community and home considered by many to be one of the most outstanding features of the program. Home economics training areas in which students may be employed are food service, child care, housekeeping management, floral design, home-furnishings, bridal con- sultant and fabricacoordinator. Experience gained from this type of program has proven to give students know- ledge and skills which help them throughout all of life. EXTREME LEFT: Mrs. Nancy Steele, Coordinator-Teacher. Yes it is possible and that is just what Roosevelt Thompson has done. Last summer Roosevelt won over 82 other applicants, a scholarship from the American Institute for Foreign Studies, in connection with the Fort Worth Public Schools' summer abroad programs. For four exciting weeks Roosevelt studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Then he went on tours of Salzburg, Paris and Rome, seeing operas and music festivals. Roosevelt, at the age of eleven, was the first member of his race to be accepted into the Texas Boys' Choir. Unfortunately, he had only been a member for one year when his voice changed. This kept him from the European tour at that time, so this was a trip of which he had long dreamed of making. Roosevelt is a soloist in the Como High School Chorus and also his church choir. It was his choral teacher, lVlrs. Jewel F. Kelly, who suggested that he apply for the scholarship. Prior to her suggestions, Roosevelt had not even thought of applying. When asked how he felt about the trip, our European Sum- mer Student remarked: lVlarvelous, educational, and simply wonderful! This trip made up for the one l missed. ...He's a scholar too! ...if-xx . . . AUSTIN Coach Austin's Como Lions 27-6 record was due to the overall team spirit possessed by the Lions. Winning the Tishomingo Oklahoma Tour- nament was additional stimulus to the Lions. This added momentum, provided the Lions with the incentive to tie for the first half of their district and to win the district playoff games, the district, bi-district, and regional titles, and to go all the way to state finals. The Lions played best when playing clutch games, winning the games that were necessities. They won the Big Ones. The spirit and the ability of the 1971 Basketball Team will long be remembered by the coach as one of the very best. O.K.
