'QF' H H 'f,, 'r-izzrs SENIOR HISTORY One rainy morning in 1934, sixteen very scared but hopeful children started their school careers in Nevada. Only three pupils from the original class--Jimmie Coker, Betty Webb, and Lula Smithf- chose to remain here to finish their quest for knowledge. In the second grade we lost a number of our class and also gained a few. While we were in the second grade one of our classmates, Lila Vaughan, died. Gilbert Criswell, Alvie Hay Julian, Howard Cook, and Cecil Dowell deserted us in the third grade. Even when we were small, we drove the men away. In the fourth grade we lost Barbara Caldwell, Barbara Smith, and Myra Houser. We gained Gerald Howard as a fifth grader and lost Raymond Butts, Dorothy Jean Smith, Mary Ruth Kraft, and Wendell Compton. The sixth grade year was indeed a lucky year for us, for in this year we gained Mary Ross, who is still with us. Our graduation from Grammar school was a great moment in the lives of us all. Just after graduation Evie Buckeley, Rosalea Cunningham, and Onella Wilkerson left our class. Our grammar school teachers were Mrs. Hartman, Miss Combs, Miss Lamm, and Mr. Huse. We proved our dramatic ability in the production of three plays during our 5th, 6th, and 7th grade days. We presented UBa, Ba, Black Sheepn, nThe Haunted Tea Roomn, and NWhere's Grandma?N When we entered high school we were sure that we were about the smartest ones around. Our first report cards disillusionaius, however. During our freshmen year the rest of our men, Gerald, Wash Pool, and Evans Watkins deserted us. ' Five lonely girls began the Sophomore year. We were soon joined by another girl, Bulah Mae Blankenship. Our Sophomore year passed without too much excitement. We were sure that we were very brilliant and unusual. One member of our Betty Webb, was elected captain of the basketball team during this year,, which was a great achievement. , Wanda Dodson, James Killian, Thedalua Moore, and Nancy Webb came to N. H. S. as Juniors. There were many exciting happenings for us as Juniors. We presented the play UDon't be Bashfuln, which was successful due to the assistance given by the Sophomore boys. The Junior-Senior banquet climaxed our year. Much effort was put forth to make the banquet a success and we felt that we were re- warded for all our labors. To our sponsor, Mrs. Kilpatrick, we owe much of our success in our Junior activities. At last we have reached our Senior year. We began the year with eight seniors--James Killian, Betty Webb, Jimmie Coker, Lula 'Q Smith, Mary Ross, Glenda Spearman, Wanda Dodson, and Mary Alice ' Boughton. Soon after school started Raymond Phillips came to join us. We thought that our class would be one to escape matrimony, but for once we were wrong. Just before mid-term, Glenda Spear- man became Mrs. C. L. Feagin. This leaves us eight seniors of '45 We are looking forward to the end of high school days with rather confused feelings. We are glad to finish, and yet sorry to leave, Our years at N. H. S. have been happy ones. --LULA SMITH .ff Q SENIOR WILL for us to end our high school car As the time comes nearer reers, we realize with what degree of sadness we will leave. We wouldn't want to depart without leaving something that will help S ' rs of '45 do make this our last our predecessors. We, the enio will and testament. The football team of 1944 upheld the high standards of sports- manship that have been established by our predecessors. Fair play has been the outstanding characteristic of Nevada teams, winning or losing. Victory was not always ours, but we will look back with pride to our team of '44 because they were, above all, good sports. At the beginning of the season, our numbers and our chances seemed rather small. In spite of his numerous other responsibili- ties, Mr. Giles consented to coach the boys. Jimmie Green and La- vid Curtis were elected co-captains. Both of these boys served well in these positions and did some fine blocking, as well as scoring, during the season. Eight brave lads began the season, joined at intervals by four others. James Killian and Dan Hudson took their places in the end positions, Jimmie Richie played halfbackg and Lionel Lind- ley proved indispensable to the team as center. Substitutes were Billy Riley, Raymond Phillips, Gary Buckeley, and James Lambert. Bennie Cryer, a letter man last year, was not able to join the team for several weeks because of an arm injury. Our team reachf ed its peak just at the end of the season. The addition of Billy Max James certainly proved alstimulus to the team. Jimmy Richie proved to be the surprise of the season. His runming ability was discovered and used. James Kil1ian's ability to catch passes ac- counted for several of Nevada's touchdowns. The football season officially opened on October 6, when the Bulldogs met the Blue Ridge team on our field. Our hopes were high for the game, and even though we lost, we were proud of our team. We managed to score 14 points against a team that had the advantage of superior training and numbers. Following this game, we suffered three defeats. A11 of these were by teams having a larger number of reserves than we. On October 13, we played Princeton and met defeat at the hands of a much larger team. We journeyed to Wylie on October 20 and again came up against overwhelming odds. On November 1, Allen invaded our gridiron to overpower our team. The climax of the season was reached on the night of November 10, when we played Josephine at Farmersville. Since great rivalry has always existed between the two teams, our victo y over Jose- phine was indeed a triumph. We defeated Josephine 20-6. 'EI rj , - On November l7, the team of '44 donned, for the last time, their football togs to tangle with.Westminister. Our reserves were given a chance in this game. We scored 22 points to Westminister's 20. On November - In a story, you know, there is always a climax just before the conclusion. In our football story the Josephine game was the cli- max, but the conclusion was yet to come. At every game, the pep squad had been there to lend the needed inspiration. Mary and Merle Ross were the very efficient leaders of the pep squad. Lula Smith was elected Football Queen. The football season was concluded on Monday night, November 27, when the pep squad entertained the football team with a banquet. The school colors, maroon and white, were predominant in the decora- tions. The programs were in the shape of footballs and the place cards were small pennants. The program consisted of toasts to the team, pep squad, coach, sponsor, captains, and queen. The music was presented by Lula Smith and Jimmie Coker. Rev. Glen Smith gave a very interesting talk. At the end of the football season we rolled up our yell books and put away our football togs with a feeling of satisfaction. As long as there are boys such as the players this year, the football spirit of N. H. S. will continue to exist and to expand. - LULA SMITH ANN xx xnx X X - f' fx N Sa 1: I 3 J t BuHdOa53 f N , ,XXIII Q LULIH SMITH F' fb 22 Qaeen fffffff ' 4 r,ff,. gi 8 Q Bulldojf . L Fx ROSS' .
