X It is my pleasure to extend best wishes for happiness and success to the Class of 1968, Common- wealth High School. In all sincerity l must say that I do not envy you the world into which you are graduating. I do however, envy you your youth and energy and I hope that you will put them to work to make the earth a better, more livable, happier place than it seens to be now. You are going out into a world of considerable confusion. At no time in history have people been so affluent, at least in our society, and have they had so many tools to make their daily chores easier, but still it can be said that this is perhaps one of the unhappiest periods in all of the time of man. How to retain the ideals and the standards that have grown with the ages in the face of a materialistic and existentialist society has proven to be more than man can contend with. This adjustment between philosophies is your job and about all I can say is that your teachers have worked diligently to give you the ideas and the skills to work with, but it will be up to you to apply them to the vast task that confronts you. I wish you luck. Herbert E. PRINCIPAL I ys fi a il I iiirt n X rx rv A A momentous event is occuring now: your commencement. J According to Webster, commence signifies that which one is entering upon: beginning or having a beginning. ,A At your commencement you have officially completed twelve years of formal schooling. In essence, though, you are just beginning your lives as independent, responsible adults. It is hoped that you will look upon your diploma as just that: your beginning into the adult world of business and university life. I hope your lives are filled with continuous growth and the courage you need to successfully achieve all your goals. y mme schwafrz ' P I c I2 r. - N f D 1 2 K xx KN X G x SN Qi I 5 fx, v W inf, ,M iw 5 'L' 4--1, N 1333555 ffimf, pf, Zggzgggiyfgggg Ne- mix ' - E Q F Q - mfg? fgsg mai ' sg gg.. ' , Do you remember . . . Our Our Our Freshman year? how, led by Mike Torres, we wore out a numerous amount of English teachers fright, Ricky?J, ordered class rings, witnessed our boys suddenly develop periscopic eyes upon Miss Pressick's arrival, and refereed fights between our own down -home group The Travelers and the administration. We never graduated, though, through no fault of our own . . . Sophomore year? how newcomer Joe Col6n merengued down the basketball courtg the affectionate feeling we all had for our little Spanish teacher, Mr. Santiago. We won Field Day by an overwhelming number of points fYea, sophomoreslj and that same day we profited Sl from our Spook House, the scariest ever. Our pigtailed classmate quacked his way through the Stolen Prince g that year we also inherited the Coronation, which was a roaring successg supported the cafeteria fcomplete with burnt grease and bugsj. To finish the year off, we flubbed -up our singing debut at the senior's graduation . . . Junior year? how with Ricky Oldach as President, we once again ordered class rings, this time with black stones, which finally arrived at the end of summer, inducted eleven classmates into the National Honor Society, again sponsored the Coronation, where our own Patty Walker was chosen Queeng the student government was reorganized and promptly dis- integrated . . . hmmm . . . Three members of our class deserted us and flew up to the Senior perch. We wound up our junior year with a blast of a Junior-Senior day, Stu- dent Council elections in which two of our classmates became President and Vice- President, and the Prom, held at the Racquet Club . . . Wouldst thou believe . . . ' Our Senior year? how guided by Mrs. Schwartz and Class President Patty Walker we made plans for the Prom, graduation ffinallyj, and organized Junior-Senior Day grainy but funpg our short- lived television idols The Good Guys , iced tea sales, the lunch -stealing from Locker 41571, an illegal football game, and homemade egg salad in lab . . . Our classmate Randy became Commonwealth's Queen at a wham -bang of a Coronation. Seniors, ah yes, we finally made it---and this entitled us to certain privileges, smoking on the bleachers and outside lunches . . . If you believe this, would you believe graduation??? l l ALLAN ROBERT ABERMAN Education is not a function of the stateg let him die if he is not clean. Allan . . . JOSEPH PASTORINO Although Mr. Pastorino is new to Commonwealth this year, he has impressed us so favorably that this section of the SENIOR CORNER is dedicated to him. For the short time he has been here, he has striven to make all of his students more aware of their surroundings. He himself wrote, If this is to be an enlightened world in which people of all races, creeds, and nationalities can live harmoniously, the teacher must develop the traits and abilities of the future generation. Mr. Pastorino has not maintained an aloof teacher-student relationship. Instead, he has made us all feel like we are friends, an admirable quality in any teacher. As advisor to the COMET and the HOURGLASS , he has unselfishly given of his time and energy--determined to release the best publications in Commonwealth's history. Because he is a fine person and an excellent teacher who has instilled in us the desire to learn more, we welcome MR. JCBEPH PASTORINO to the SENIOR CORNER. l f'N , K, THE SENIOR CORNER Every year, the Senior Class elects three of their classmates whom! they feel deserve special Commendation. Mrs. Schwartz in peace. .ax 1' 'R L S , 9 Returning to Puerto Rico after an absence of ten years, I picked up the local newspaper in hopes of finding news of my classmates fClass of '68J. I was really surprised to see, on the front page, headlines about William and Tom L. They apparently are international playboys and are returning to their harem in Asia. Sandy was also on the front page. Her campaign for No Makeup in School is getting wide publicity. As I turned the pages, I ran into more familiar names. Allan runs a beauty salon specializing in hair straightening, and has a flower shop on the side. There's a picture of Javier on this page, advertising men's colognes. Rose is also adver- tising: she's now a plastic surgeon specializing in nose jobs. One article cites Bill as President of the Auto Safety Club. The society section shows Roberto modeling sunglasses. Patty models clothes for 6' girls. Stacie has a column on this page called Advice to the Love Lorn. We produced quite a few manufacturers: Ricky makes Banlon golf shirts, Gary makes matzoh balls, Harry's business is making beer kegs, and Ricardo man- ufactures elevator shoes. Frank, the principal of Commonwealth, wrote an article boasting about Joaquin, his typing teacher. Eduardo, judging by his ad, tunes toy pianos. On this same page is a story about Steve - a very successful dietician who emphasizes diet pills. Randy is also advertising as a driving instructor. Here's a picture of a tugboat operator. Why, it's Jimmy! And next to him is Lori. Her sign says she's a beachcomber who sells Seashells down by the sea- shore. Kathy and Ligia work together now. Kathy is a gym instructor, Ligia has in- vented a special kind of Bandaid for knees injured during volleyball games. Here's a picture of Teresa and Tom G. The caption says Teresa holds seances, and Tom is a famous collector of antique miniature cars. Brian has made the news as the first successful settler on the moon. Erwin is a famous sound effects man for poultry advertisements. The Minca Hinca stars four of our graduates. Jose is a professional soul broth- er. Lynn is now drumming under the name of Gena Krupa. Barbara is there, a belly dancer, and so is Nettie, who is an expert snake charmer. Finally, I've arrived at the Sports page. Here's Fernando with one of his surf- ing trophies - he designs them. Jorge is a jockey and just won the Kentucky Derby. Rene is an Olympic backstroker. Judi is a renowned contortionist. Last but not least, Alfonso qthat's mey is a rich executive, although I made my money manufacturing Peruvian rings for Sl. 98. So you see, every member of my Senior Class has made a name for himself, and is an upright citizen f???J. Q 4 -wi' i XR X z y. 4 me ix WELL . W. Thus, membership is very selective, and the Society brings together the most outstanding students in the school. The Chapter endeavors to promote high scholastic attainment not only among its members, but among all the students of the school. This year, the Chapter demonstrated its service to the community and society by supporting the Voluntary Library League, initiating a tutor- ing service, and adopting a Korean orphan. Financial support for the orphan was guaranteed by successful tea and lemonade sales. The NHS of Commonwealth High School deserves full praise for an extremely productive year. The 1968 COMET is a melting pot of everything that happened at CHS this year. The COMET was published from hard work, with deadlines to meet, pictures to take and develop, copy to write, and all the things that go hand in hand with producing a yearbook. Many week- ends at Barbara's house were spent sorting through stacks of pictures, piles of papers, and boxes of little goodies needed to produce a successful yearbook. We've tried to create a book which we hope will be a permanent reminder of your school years. L. to R.: TOP ROW: P. Glazer, E. Schoengolcl, J. Nugent, N. Black. BOTTOM ROW: A. Farkas, G. Odio, B. FARiEWEi.L MESSAGE In a period of anxiety and crisis, the main problem of education is not in- tellectual: it is the problem of human existence. How should we live? How should we look upon society? What should be our final goals? Knowledge is the key to our future. It implies a change of values, a trans- valuation of ideals. It means that the arts must not be confined to the museum: rather they must become part and parcel of our everyday existence. Real education brings us into touch with ideas and ideals which have a timeless reality. It creates new friends. It represents man's yearning for status and signifi- cance in life. , In The Brothers Karamazov we read, Everyone isreally responsible to all men for all and everything. This ideal should be the motto for our graduates, who have the enthusiasm and the insight to face the future with an open perspective. , I - f , , , , t f , X X X 3 X . ' f V I 1 .
