We, therefore, take this space at the very beginning of the 1966 COMET to extend our thanks to those many people who have helped the making of this yearbook possible. Many thanks to our sponsors, Mrs. Rauchle, Mr. Laura and Mr. Mendez . n We also extend thanks to the staffs of Parkville and San Juan Schools, specially Mrs. Dowd and Mrs. Ferguson, for thek patient cooperation . . ' Lynn D'Uzes, our art consultant, whose help and drawings were indispensable, also receives our thanks. ' Our very special thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Torregrosa, our yearbook representative, and Miss Gonzalez, our photographer, for their unselfish help and assistance. Mrs. Gomez also deserves our thanks for her indefatigable drive energy, encouragement, work and soft drinks . Last, but not least, we would like to thank all our sponsors, with out whose patronage this yearbook would certainly not have been possible'. We cannot forget the many who remain unknown to us but have contributed with their work and effort to make the 1966 COMET a success. To all of you, our appreciation. You've done a good job. Because: You have devoted time and effort to make us more mature and thoughtful teenagers, . you have shown us the hard path of the fu- ture, which we must overcome, . of your ability to inspire us with knowledge . of your unfailing willingness to help us all as a class, and also as individuals, We hold esteem and honor for you as a man and teacher, but in our hearts, you will always be re membered as a friend. 1 I Because: . You have dedicated many hours to encourage the development of individual initiative and personality in each student . of the warmth of your personality, height of character, and depth of sincerity, . you are a symbol of the high ideals we are trying to achieve, . of your warm, friendly, unselfish attitude towards every student, We hold respect and admiration for you as a devot- ed wife, parent, and most of all, as a teacher. Mr. Wilfred Laura W T We ask you, the reader of the l966 Comet to come travel the path of mem- ories with us. The H1966 Comet will try to contain in its few pages the past and a glimpse at the future of our fine students. The many memories can never be put down for another to see. But to us, the students these intangibles shall always remain in our hearts . Here, we present the fun. . .the hopes . . .the devotion which we all feel for Com- monwealth. The reader can see only the pictures and read the namesg but we hear the laughs, relive the moments, see the . future. . . and remember. Through the years, we may forget, but just to open this small book we are able to relive a wonderful part of our lives. The laughter, tears and voices of our friends are all herel . .in the pictures. . .and in our hearts. So, come with us down memory lane and remember. . .remember how it used to be. 5 C IN a 5 ,, ?k,,, T ,, fha fin ...f V K -A. 1 f , , i 1 M4M -...J 1 if .f , ,Q....,., . Quantity, how- ever, is not a merit in itself. .Factors of quality are important and significant. This class, in its membership, represents excellent quality characterized by a zest for participation in student activ- ities, the promotion of commendable school citizenship and diligent efforts to achieve superior scholarship. It is a class described as responsive to leadership from its peers and faculty. Each member of your class is challenged to exert his utmost efforts of growth to continue his education, thereby extending his horizons of knowledge and understanding. Too, it is worthwhile and essential to seek and improve personal relationships with one's fellow man. You are fortunate, as a class, to have experienced the realism of a multi-cultu.re environment. In this way, you have acquired respect for the quality of an individual in terms of his innate worth and not limited by his creed or color. A Be alert to maintain your personal integrity in your pursuits of learning, within yourself as an individual and with others with whom you come in contact. Realize it is 'not only important to receive hom others as you develop, but to give to others. In time this giving as well as receiving constitutes a reach for maturity. Best wishes for your continuing development and the realizations of worthwhile and meaningful goals. - Dr. Frank F. Snyder Superintendent 8 . Though the year was tedious, we were spirited Freshmen showing our endless confidence by our first stride in gaining ninth grade class rings. True, we did not have a graduation, but our class trip to Treasure Island made up for it. Of course we will never forget the fabulous Skit Night presented that year, nor the Sham -Rock Shimmy and the usual cake sales given by our headstrong class. Our Sophomore year was more exciting than our Freshman year. With Allan Keene heading us as president, the year was full of activities, including an Athletic Banquet, uproaring campaigns and Career Day. Of all the years our class has been through together, the one most treasured and remembered was our Junior year. Under the leadership of our president, Norma Lopez, we held an unforgettable Barn Dance, in which we raised enough money for the Prom. Once again class rings were ordered, and black stones marked our emblem of '66, The Junior class was proud tofhaveone of their classmates achieve the title of Miss Commonwealth '65. lt was an unforgettable night for all of us, especially for Queen Jan West. Sneak Day proved itself a vital success, due to die wonderful compatability of Senior -junior feeling. And of course, our Prom, held at the Caribe Hilton, will always be one of our most treasured nights . Now, finally reaching our goal, it was our endeavor to make the most of our Senior year. Bruce Borish and Mrs. Rauchle made all our hardships seem easy. Sneak Day, dances, the Carnival, the Prom and graduation were planned strate- gically and willingly. Many new ideas were introduced, but our old ideas, such as friendliness, team -work, and spirit were not left behind. As the pages of the history of our class closes, memories live on and the' class of '66 graduates proudly and graciously. But our minds will carry on the ideals that only Commonwealth could give us. And so, fellow classmates, as the door of high school closes, our memories and thoughts will open the lock to new vic- tories that await us. FRANK E. HIGGINBOTI-IAM Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself and you shall have the sufhage of the world. - Ralph Waldo Emerson Although new this year, Mr. I-Iigginbotham, our class sponsor and Math and Physics teacher, has decidedly won a place in our Senior Corner. His determination and enthusiasm in teaching us have opened new horizons and interests to those of us who have been lucky enough to be his students. Mr. Higginbotham has, in more than one way, prepared us for our enirance into the adult world. It has been his dedication in helping us and his personality that have made us admire him as a person and proudly consider him a friend. But above all, it will be his integrity and sincerity that we will always respect and remember. And so, Mr. I-Iigginbotham, it is for all this and more, that we, the Seniors of '66, thank you. 30 A This section of the Senior Corner is set aside to honor outstand- ing Seniors, not only because of their scholarship, but also for their character, leadership, forcefulness and contributions to the school. This year, this honor has been granted to three seniors, all of who fully deserve it. CHRISTINE TORRES, our popular editor of The Drifter , has, A with her dedication and hard work, persistently strived for more school spirit. In spite of her many extracurricular activities, Kris has managed to maintain one of the highest averages in our class, and has truly earned her membership in the Senior Corner. Leadership is the quality that places JOSE MASSO II in this section Being President of both the Student Council and the Honor Society has been a tough job, but Jose has managed to overcome many obstacles and has succeeded in achieving his 'goals for the better- ment of our school. The Senior Corner welcomes him. MARIA ELENA GOMEZ, our energetic and active editor of 1 Comet, has through the years shown her dedication to the school. Although leading a hectic extracurricular life, Meg has still been one of our top students. Her school spirit and friendly personality will long be remembered by the class of '66. Success in life is a matter not so much of talent or opportunity as of concentration and perseverance. - C.W. Wendte. Keep it up! 31 Last Wz'ZZ and Testament QQ' ' Q. Student Council Made up by representatives from all the grades, and led by its active President, Jose Masso II, the Student Council has been one of the most active organizations of our school. It has been faced with many obstacles, but they have managed to overcome them, as they have strived for more school spirit, more and better activities, and the general improvement of our school. The school can rightfully be proud of its Student Council, for it has upheld the spirit traditional to the organization. 68 MEMBERS : 1 2th Gra de: lf .. The H1966 Comet is the culmination of a succession of disasters and near-disasters that has cost every member of its sta.ff a few of their brain cells. But, then, they can afford to lose a few. . . and as you gaze through this grand volume, I'm sure you will agree that it was, after all, worth it. Not only have they met their deadlines promptly Q?l ?J but they have shown great courage . . . Great courage , you ask? Ac- complishmems like the following show it: Their attempts to waddle through the jungles of stray papers at Maria Elena's house and their valiant dashings about San Francisco in an audacious little Renault look- ing for who knows Who, who had who knows what of the watchamacallit staff of our yearbook. What more perseverance can be shown than staying up all night to meet a deadline due next morning. These treasured years of our lives close,. leaving behind a collec- tion of memories that will remain with us forever . People, learning, fun, friends. . .Commonwealth has been all this and much moreg it has been our way of life for four years, years we will never forget. The classes, the teachers, the dances, the rushes, will all be present in our minds as we look back on our school days. We leave, to those who remain, our sincere hope that they enjoy and profit from these years as much as we have. We now understand those who have gone before us, and their sadness in parting. But what is gone is gone, and we now look ahead into a new horizon, rich in promises. just goodbye is left for us to say now, it is a hurting word. So, as we walk away, leaving behind the school that saw us grow and mature we can only say FAREWELL. . . .
