This year of 1964 -65 has encased a big step forward. We are no longer one, but three schools with the addition of San Juan and Parkville Schools . This consolidation created an atmosphere of additional knowledge and educational backing. We were faced with the question of how to get the most out of what we had put in. The '65 Comet shows what we have achieved throughout this year . This year can also be called a fulfillment. Many of the 1965 Seniors are pioneers in the sense that they have been at Common- wealth School from the first through twelfth year, and thus, have shared in all that has been achieved throughout the years . The '65 Comet will be a tribute to our graduating pioneers. While we know that life at Commonwealth School is a multitude of realities which are too intangible to be told i.n black and white, perhaps in some small way we can preserve all which we hold so dearly . If this book will serve to bridge the past and bring to mind the priceless memories, joys, and pleasures of the year just gone by, it will have served its purpose well. 2 QKQKQKQUQBQXQKQUQ5Q5Q6Q5Q5QKQUQBQ5QKQ5QUQUQ5Q5Q5Q5Q5Q5Q5Q5Q5Q5Q5Q5Q5Q5S 5Q5Q5Q5Q5Q6Q5Q5Q5Q5Q5QUQ5QUQUQ5Q5Q5Q5Q6 gwmtrps 61550153 2 9JmBG-ob, H92 Ui: 'Drug-'g 2, mm 05- 'OUJCDQEQ rv WQUQ H w 'DfDEK4 I-'-cnH'pL'CDrD Sogfirom UQE.-:r.E,'.L'.H 25' 0,155 zaaihw EQQHEUS -52933 g 52gE'U- WEFHQK: Qgosaa gofbfll rf oiiaia' QUUEQH Q-99 I-I ' HQ:-rg-n-B gg.:-gfb Gm mmf?-E, -4-rmo rr Digg'-UO 33 H1930 Efgofgo I3 H C1 oQ0,3,.,s::s v-gn 'DFEOQ ELEM-,bg H052 O5-E'D U I'-' l 'l-' cogfforo 392252 Qgfcogg CD:-gl-h Org .,,E' . That year is full of memo- ries such as Mrs. Leyva's surprise birthday party, purchasing class pins, and frustrating rehearsals for the graduation march. With the leadership of our presidents Ernesto Gomez and David Ratliff we made it through to June and our graduation from Junior High. Graduation was an exciting event held at the Engineer's College with special awards going to Ernesto G6mez, Carol Isales and Harriet Ashton for outstanding work in English, Social Studies and Science respec- tively. The special event was celebrated with a party held at Carmen Martnorani's house till 2:00 A.M. Our sophomore year was a full one led by our very active homeroom teacher Mrs. Brady. We began the year by having a Columbus Day picnic at Punta Salinas Beach. That year we sponsored the first Career Conference for Commonwealth School. Fond memories of visiting lecturers, precise exercises and Book Reports still linger in our minds. We began our Junior year with great hopes for a better Junior-Senior Prom that following June. Led by our capable president George Gordon and our homeroom teacher Mrs. Alvarado we held dances and raffles to increase our treasury. Our fondest memory of that year was our ring ceremony, marked by the presentation of a class ring to our president in recognition and appreciation for all' his work. ' june came with a very nice Prom held at the Club Nautico followed at 5:00 A.M. with a breakfast at Mrs. Huntei-'s house. To end it all there was a beach party at Shell Beach. Last, and most important of all is our Senior year. The success of this year was due greatly to the wonderful spirit of Unity attained for the first time by this class of seniors. Never before has a class enjoyed such cooperation from the parents, faculty and administration. The class response to the help and leadership of our homeroom teacher, Mrs, McCurdy and our class president, Mike Sollins, was outstanding as proved by the inspiring success of our first and main activity, the senior carnival, held on November 6, 1964. With a profit of S900 the class had more than surpassed their goal for the treasury. A raffle and a couple of well planned dances rounded out their success. The year passed with a perfect Sneak Day at Vega Baja beach and a dance at Jan West's house after- wards. The last semester was marked with a great concentration on college plans, busy preparation for a Junior - Senior Prom and finally graduation. And so ends the history of the graduating class of 1965, but began the future of ever widening horizons. .W HOWARD BARTE h Only Love Sees Howie . . .always seen talking. . .usually about his one and only JULIE. . .zany disposition. - .Digs Crying and Math. . . While cleaning up her home, the phone rings and when she answers it she is stumped by the caller. It happens to be Marilyn McCurdy, now a stewardess, whom Diane hasn't seen for years. Diane: Hello? This is the Goldschmidt residence.Who is calling? Marilyn: Marilyn McCurdy. Is this Diane Teater? D - - Why, yes '. M -- Don't you remember the blond in World History class that used to Wonder how you could write with your left hand? D -- Oh, how couldl forget? Hi, it's been such a long timei Where are you? You must come over, in fact, I'll pick you upi M-- No, I'm here at the airport and I leave in half an hour--I'm a stewardess . So you're married to Rayi Any Pests? D-- Can't you hear 'em? It's a tribe--5 boys and the baby girl: they're all crazy about Ray. He's a plumber, you know. M -- Really? How about Laurie jones?'Have you heard from her? D-- Have I'. She lives in this building and she's a P1iblico driveri M -- She always did like to chauffer people around--good ol' Laurie . D-- Have you seen any of those other guys we used to go to school with? M-- Well, let me see. About 3 months ago I saw Terry Harcourt who's just a plain ol' housewife. At the time she was living in Germany. And you'll never guess who I bumped into on one of my flightsi Howard Barte. He and julie were on opposite sides of the plane Qapparently another fightl julie with the kids . He's a truck driver now. While in Greenwitch Village, I came across Lyn who paints, sings folk songs and recites poetry down at the club. Also, I saw Kitty Patino, who was buying a firm of hair straight- eners when I saw her. She still isn't married. D-- Has her hair changed colors? M -- Yes, I believe it was red. Have you seen anyone? D -- I met up with Alan Rivera- -he's a professional baseball player . He still hasn't really settled down though. Also, I saw Lucy Cote's picture in the paper--she's a dress designer. Max is doing swell. He's the owner of a small club downtown called The Latin Chalet and also, entertains with his key number of Let me entertain you . Remember Rosana? She's gotten to be one of the top singers of the country, she made an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show but right now she's on a tour of the U .S .O. Ram6n Cram, Tom Walker, and David Brownstein all are partners in a company which makes surf and whopping boardsi M -- That sure figures'. How about Martin Marks? D-- Oh, yeah. He's trying to improve the D.K.Wfs. Hey, have you by any chance heard of Mike Sollins? M -- While I was in Italy I met up with him and Steve Schumakerg they were looking at the Leaning Tower of Pisa and I believe they make towers. They always did stuff like thati Didl tell you? Tammy is a stewardess and we do flights together at times . 34 - Oh really? Has she done any husband hunt-ing? - Has she? She's working on her 4th husband now'. The latest victim is this co -pilot who's about 5 years younger than she. - That is somethingi Remember Carol Isales? She gives Charm classes. - How about Carmen Martorani and David Ratliff? - Carmen is following her father's footstepsg she's taking over his business and has made an investment on a yearbook company. Big money. David cleans up golf courses. Have you heard of jamie Shalom? - Yes, she's a dancing teacher. Her partner is Pablo Iglesias. Michael Dubinsky is a prize fighter you know. Laureen Summers is now working in the Peace Corps and Barbara Layton is working on the San juan Star. One of the best writers there, I hear. - Is that so? Did you know that Julio Godreau is my son's History teacher? - Yes, he always did study hard for that class. I saw Rafael on my plane about 6 months ago and he's a cartoon artist for Mad magazine. - Good for himi Oh, by the way, I hear Joanna has become a very successful society doctor . Glenna is a dentist. Poor woman has trouble keeping all her 4 kids out of her office. She pulls my kids' teeth out for free. Gigi Miller, now a Psychologist had Ira under special treatment. He had a nervous breakdown--a case of too many kids for just him and Elaine to handle. - Wait a minute--how about those brains - -Ernest and Melanie? - You mean I didn't tell you? Melanie is one of New York's most noted beauticians. She really knows just how to fix your hair! Oughta pay her a, visit sometime. And Ernesto, with his brains has become the Commanding Officer of the Cuban Anti -Castro League, and as a side line is editor of Playboy magazine. - Well ain't that the berries'. Well, my plane has just been called, so I really have to go. It was great hearing about all our old friends ,Wasn't it? Next time I'm in town I'll give you a ring. Insular Honor Society NATIONAL uouon socunv xx ' I 1 1 29.9 is L5 David Raniff The Commonwealth School Chapter of the Insular Honor Society is one of great dignity. Two of its worthy members have brought great honor not only to themselves, but to the entire school. Last year David Ratliff and Ernesto Gomez, in the annual two -day convention held at the Inter American University, were chosen President and Vice -President respectively of all the chapters on the island of Puerto Rico. David's simple and precise, yet winning speech convinced the delegates of his abilities for the presidency. Likewise, Ernesto's dignity, wide vocabulary and intelligence spoke for him. Indeed, we will always cherish this lasting honor and pride that David and Ernesto have brought to themselves and consequently, the Commonwealth School Chapter of the National Honor Society. gy g Ernesto G6mez 70 THE SAN JUAN STAR - Wednesday, April 22, 1964 AVID RATIIFF, COMMONWEALTH SENIOR, IS PRESIDENT Honor Society Selects Officers ay NAT oamvios David Ratliff, a Commonwealth High School senior. has been elect- ed president of the Puerto Rico Association of National Honor Society Chapters. A complete slate of officers was chosen for 1964-65 at the conclu- sion of a three-day convention end- ing' Sunday on the Inter American University campus in San German. Other officers from the San Juan metropolitan area. are: Ernesto Gomez, vice president: Enrique Lamoutte, secretary, and Aniquita Silva, treasurer, Seventy-tour students and spon- sors attended the fifth annual con- vention from 12 of the 22 island chapters. To be a member of the association, a student must have ia scholastic average of 90 or bet- 82. Election of officers was not based on campaign speeches or popularity appeal, according to Miss Denise Francois, Common- wealth High School assistant prin- cipal and association coordinator. Every candidate, she said, made a three-minute speech on the student's goals in life, ideas about what they want to accom- plish and how the Honor Society can be improved, Each school attending had three votes, The schools participating were: St, John's School, Academia Sa- grado Corazon, Roosevelt Roads High School, Antille High School. Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola, Robinson School, University High School, Academia del Perpetuo Socorro, Colegio San Jose, Com- monwealth High School and Cole- gio San Felipe of Arecibo, Outgoing officers are: Gloria M. Ortiz, president: Nel- lio Justicia, vice president: Mar- tita Melendez, secretary: and Ro- bert Johnson, treasurer. KS OF STATUS, .l.F.K., PEACE, MORALITY sX Governor And Wife Honor 60 Students ln lively Discussions At lu Fortaleza By MANNX sunnni A group of about 60 honor students: from most of the private schools of San Juan were guests of Gov. and Mrs. Munoz at La Fortaleza yesterday --and there didn't seem to be a Popular in the bunch. The group, dressed in Sunday fine-, ry, gathered around the First Lady in a patio at the Executive Man- sion and engaged in some lofty ban- ter with doiia Ines, who prompted the discussion with some probing questions. Among the topics discussed were: the meaning of morality, President Kennedy's contribution to mankind. science, religion and -essential to every gathering at which political persons are present- the status of Puerto Rico.. Decided Opinions The students were all members of their respective school chapters of the National Honor Society of Puerto Rico, and all seemed to have decided opinions on the topics discussed. Dona lnes asked the students about the meaning of neace and how it could be attained. One student answered that peace was something within each individual and that even il the world was in chaos, many of the world's' problems could be resolved if each person was at peace with himself. The answer: prompted a more pessimistic student to reply that world peace could be obtained ins that fashion ony if everybody in the world had the same feeling of inter- 3 .nal peace. Felt Close To Kennedy One of the students said that what she liked most about the late Pre- sident Kennedy was that he made use of youth with the Peace Corps. He asked us- to help him so we felt a lot closer to him. The conversation drifted aim- Iessly as doixa Ines fed a ques- tion here and prompted an an- swer or a rebuttal there. But it was during a question on morality that one student lit a bonfire under the students - who in lar- ge measure came from religious institutions - by suggesting that it is more important to have a personal moral code than a reli- gion. The last question fed to the group was on status and a young girl who hesitantly made a slightly embarrassed introduction finally said that she believed in statehood for Puerto Rico becau- se statehood would bring an end to the uncertainty about Puerto Rico's future. Another -a young fellow this time- suggested that it was im- possible to discuss Puerto Rico's future with any certainty since the average Puerto Rican had not yet defined himself as an indivi- dual. Until we do that, we should consider ourselves Puerto Ricans not independentistas, statehooders or Popularsf' A third girl said independence is the logical status for the is- land. We are Puerto Ricans and should continue to be Puerto Ri- cans, she said. We are now trying so hard to be Americans that we are forgetting how to speak Spanish. Honor Society lst. r. One of the biggest challenges, getting the money, was successfully handled by our business manager, Tammy Derieux and her staff. The layout department, headed by Laurie Jones, met their task of laying out all the pages over again until they were perfect.
