ADVERTISEMENTS s S s s X 5 x I R 5 llllllfi With hearts full of affection we dedicate our last Annual to Mr. Dan Hart, Who in our problems was our friend, our advisor, Who in our interest labored long, doing much more than his part. In our joys, he was ever a sharerg in our disappointments, a sympathizer. We always found him ready, smiling and energetic, As we carried to him our tales of woe, We were sure we'd find him understanding and sympathetic. So into this dedication, our love, our affection and our sincere appreciation go. 4 kTllO To Miss Betty Michels also this book we dedicate: To our class she has truly been a friend, Always, where needed, a helping hand she'd lend. A smile she'd give, a kind word she'd say, A kind deed she'd do to help us on our way, When it was for our good, never did she hesitate. For this, to her a debt of gratitude we owe. And by this dedication, our love and appreciation we'd like to show. 5 FFC 6 I COMMERCIAL HIGH SCHOOL THIRTY-FIFTH AND BULL STREETS SAVANNAH GEORGIA C PA December 1, 1956 Dear Graduates of 1957: On behalf of the faculty and staff of you school may I express to you our warm congratulations on your achievements during your tenure with us. Irons and steel and hickory tea Frowns and gripes from 9 to 3. You teach six full hours, and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt. You pay your dues in this and that Then for 29 days your billfold's flat. I was born on a morning when it was cloudy and cool I picked up my register and headed for school. I wrote 84 names on the homeroom roll And the principal said, Well, bless my soul. You teach six full hours, and what do you get? Cuts and bruises and dirt and sweat. I got two black eyes and can hardly walk When I turned my back, then came the chalk. Aff I got 84 kids and 42 seats. Sixty are talking while 24 sleep. I can hardly get 'ern all through the door And if I don't watch out, they'll send me som You teach six full hours to 84 brats And all of them yelling like dogs and cats, They're cutting on seats, and writing on walls Hugging and kissing in the upstairs halls. The last bell rings and I start for the door. My head's a ringing and my feet are soreg I taught six full hours, my day is made But I still have 300 papers to grade. You teach six full hours and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt. I'll go to St. Peter, but I just can't stay . . . COMMERCIAL TRIUMPHS OVER SYLVANIA Commercial started its football season in great fashion by defeating Sylvania 7-O in Sylvania. The game was played on a wet and muddy field, viewed by a huge crowd of Commercial supporters. Commercials lone TD came on a pass to Sonny Bunton from George Thompson. The play netted 41 yards. Tom Edenfield, fullback, hit the middle for the extra point. Sylvania threatened late in the game, but a desperation pass was intercepted by james Holland. Commercial was on the five-yard line when the final whistle sounded. K il COBRAS ROMP FULTON The famous passing combination of George Thompson to Billy Phillips was too much to handle for Fulton High as Com- mercial romped over Fulton 27-0 in Cheney Stadium in Atlanta. Phillips hauled 3 TD passes from Thompson. The passes were for nine, 36, and 28 yards. Commercials first touchdown came late in the first quarter. Sonny Bunton returned a punt to the Cohras' 47-yard line. Deal hit for 15 yards. Deal hit the line again for eight and Rewis made six for a first down on the nine. From that point, Thompson caught Phillips in the end zone for the score. After consistent short gains hy Rewis, Deal, and Edenfield that moved the ball to the 36-yard line Thompson found Phillips again for the score. A fumhle recovered by james Holland on the 29-yard line resulted in another TD pass from Thompson to Phil- lips from 28 yards away. The game was played before a large crowd at Grayson Stadium. Richmond's great depth proved to be the deciding factor in the game. Commercials passing attack faltered for the first time as George Thomp- son completed only five out of 18 passes. The running attack was led by lo-Io Deal, who picked up 24 yards in eight carries. Sonny Bunton picked up 22 yards in two carries late in the game, Pretzel Harrison and Dixon johnson kept the Cobras from being shut out as they crashed through to nail a Richmond back in the end zone for a safety, P PAT WALL JAMES HOLLAND SHEK NG MARVIN TILLMAN iilll , :V - -W -- ,, ' 4 ' , Hp. DUR AlL,lL-,CllTY FOOTBALL TEAM CITY CHAMPS CRUSH THOMASTON Commercial put together a great air and ground attack to gain a 24-0 victory over Robert E. Lee. The passes were thrown by George Thompson to All- State end Billy Phillips. The fine running attack was led by Sonny Bunton and Tommy Rewis, The Cobras' first score came on a drive worth 72 yards. Mc- Elveen sparked the drive with a 57-yard touchdown run. The second score came on a 51-yard pass from Thompson to Phillips. The final tally was added late in the game when Sonny Bunton was sprung loose for 62 yards. COBRAS KNOCK OVER CADETS This was the big one for the Cobras. When the dust had cleared at Grayson Stadium-Commercial had beat Benedic- tine 20-6, to wrap up the city champion- ship. This was the most enjoyable victory for Spellman and crew during the year. B. C. struck paydirt early in the second period on a line plunge by halfback john Clancy for their first and only score of the night. The Cobras struck right back with 15 seconds remaining in the first half. The TD came on a 10-yard pass from George Thompson to Danny Akins. Thompson's PAT was good and the Snakes held a 7-6 lead at the halftime. Midway the third period George Thompson threw a tremendous pass to Phillips on a play that netted some 65 yards. Commercial's last score came on another pass from Thompson to Phillips that carried about 20 yards. COMETS UPSET COBRAS The Commercial Cobras finished out their football season in Douglas by losing to Coffee County 35-32. Tommy Rewis scored the game's first TD on a 60- yard run around left end. Sonny Bunton, speedy halfback, scored two touchdowns on long runs but both were nullified because of penalty. Billy Phillips struck paydirt twice on an intercepted pass worth 80 yards and a 40-yard pass from George Thompson. McElveen and Bunton tallied the other scores for Commercial. l55 Ulillfi illillfir, llilvllxlllkliir iCUll?uRAS Standing: Buhhn Pricstcr, Keith Hendricks, Billy Phillips, Danny Aikens, Arnie Lanier. Al Q3-N ,- 0-...J Ms we '-sq ...Q 4 L A HERE TODAY - GONE TOMORROWV HAIL AND FAREWELLV The beginnings of Commercial date back to the year 1908, when, for the first time, four commercial subjects were offered at Savannah High School, which, at that time, was located on the corner of Bull Street and Oglethorpe Avenue. Gradually other subjects were added and in 1912 a department of Business Edu- cation was created. By 1936 this department had grown so large that it was necessary to institute a new school. Thus Commercial came into existence with its main purpose to prepare students for the business world by giving them a general knowledge of business administration and a better preparation for employment. By 1947 the school was so large that it was moved from the Savannah High School at its present location into the Richard Arnold Building at 1810 Bull Street. Since that time Commercial has added many activities which make a well rounded educational program. Some of these are a homemaking department, a library, a department of distributive education, an R.O.T.C. program, a band, and a full time athletic program. Spanish, French, algebra, plane geometry, and biology have been offered to students planning to enter college. The services of a guidance personnel to advise and recommend solutions to in- dividual problems have been a very valuable asset to the school. Now, like all good things, having served its purpose, Commercial High School approaches the end of its road and gives way to progress and the needs of the community-a comprehensive high school. But before she goes, we feel that Commercial should be given a pat on the back and praise for a job well done. It has sent out many Savannah boys and girls prepared to better not only themselves but also the community in which they live. The spirit of COMMER- CIAL will live on in these men and women. We dedicate this final annual to COMMERCIAL HIGH SCHOOL of Savan- nah, Georgia. ff 1:33 . X fa Hg Zwnervw ,.
