Of these, five were veterans of last year's eleven narnelyy Butler, Krumenauer, King, Haggerty, and Von D1-Oesehei Muller was unable to play ati the beginning of the season, b ef deficiencies in his studies. From this material Mr. Clark and Mr, Finnegan hammered out a team which, although often defeated did not dishonor Commercial. , ' , CCENISC The first gridiron struggle of the season was with Richmond Hill. When the whistle blew, ending the first half, the ball was on our opponent's one-yard line. Another minute of play might have told a different story from the final score of 0 to O. The first important game of the season was played on October 3 against the High School of Commerce. The New Yorkers had the heavier team, but our men were' the faster. Butler played a brilliant game, but at times was poorly supported. On the whole, however, our team did well, holding Commerce .to a field goal in the first half, and a final score of 41 to O. In a mid-week contest, Commercial defeated the Brooklyn Col- lege team by the score of 11 to 41. VVe outweighed our opponents, played faster, and showed better team work. On October 10, Commercial journeyed to Cornwall-on-the- Hudson. There we went down in honorable defeat before tl1e New York Military Academy eleven, the score being 5 to O. The Academy team was the heavier, but our boys played a very creditable game. , 'Boys' High School defeated us by a 5 to O score on Coinmer- cial's field, October 17. Costly fumbling tells the tale. On October 241, our' boys badly defeated Stuyvesant High School by the liberal score of 17 to 0. VVe completely outplayed our opponents at every point, although the latter were considerably heavier. This made the Cup series, one game for each school. I On May 19 our team broke the tie in the P. S. A, L, ahead of Boys' High School by winning a game with a score of 5 to 3. Owing to a disputed decision of the umpire the game was protested by Boys' High School, and the P. S. A. L. committee decided that the game should be replayed. Townsend Harris de- feated by the score of 8 to 6, and De Witt Clinton defeated by the score of 9' to 2, advanced Commercial two games in the P. S. A. L. Commercial added another P. S. A. L. victory to her list when shc defeatedeStuyvesant by the score of 4: to 2. A practice .game with Manhattan Prep. was won by Commercial by the score of 2 to 1. E'-On.Anniversary Day, Commercial beat Manual in the Hnal cup game, by a score of 7 to 5. This game won for Commercial the 1908 Chandler Cup, and the 1907 Chandler Cup, as this was the game to be replayed. This game also counted for a P. S. A. L. game. In the replayed contest with Boys' High on June 26, Com- mercial won by a score of 7 to 41, .thus securing the P. S. A. L. championship of 1908, with a 1.000 per cent. average. , forging For two years Commercial's basketball teams have been totally unsuccessful. This has been largely due to a lack of general inter- est in the game. For the season of 1908-1909 the proSpeCtS f01' fl successful team are very bright. Mr. Stock, of the English Dcparti ment, proves to' be an excellent coach, and with a large llllllllwl' Of skillful boys from which to pick the material for the team, we hope- that Commercial will make a very creditable showing.
