Mr. F1int's connection with the school dates from April, 1399, Witli him are associated Mr. Reser, appointed in 1900, and Mr. MacGregory, Mr. Van Houten, Mr. Coan, and Mr. Greenberg. V The course in drawing aims to give a broad, general culture, to increase the power of observation, and to train the hand that it may carry out the will of a trained mind. Three lines of work are taken up and carried on during the entire three years of the Course. These are: free-hand drawing, which includes the sketching of com- mon objects and nature, with pencil, charcoal, and color, design, with special attention to shaping and using letters, the theory of color, and conventions, mechanical drawing, which includes the theory of projection and its application to the portrayal of common objects and simple mechanical devices. 3 6

Mr. Emery was appointed in September, 1903. I Mr, Bliss followed in February, 1904, Mr. Schuyler. in September of thesame- year., Mr. Hook was added to the staff in September, 1,905,fand Mr. Lee in Gctober, 1907. ' - i 'The work in mathematics includes commercial arithmetic ele- ' - ' J mentary algebra, and plain geometry. The course in commercial arithmetic is designed to meet the requirements of actual business. A part of each instrU.C'Ci011 period is ,devoted to drill work in the fundamental operations. Absolute accuracy incomputation is de- mandedj. The learning of rules is' expressly discouraged, and every effort is made to make the problems concrete and to induce the pupil to usehis common sense intheir solution. I i The- course of elementary algebra aims to meet, as far as pos- sible,fthe needs of pupils. who are unlikely to take up advanced rnathe1natical.,Wo,rk. Special stress is laid upon the solution of practical problems. Atf the same- time every effort is made to give the 'pupil the' power of abstract thought which comes from the care- ful study ofalgebra. 1 up y in ,geometry covers the first three books with portions of the fpurtlrandfifth books. l From the beginning an attempt is made to show thepractical application iof the .theorems and to con- nect theme with every-day experiences of the pupil.
