What mystery lies in doors-for man experiences any and every emotion before he tums the knob to an uncertain fate. The Ledger considers this an appropriate theme for graduates as we stand before the massive DOOR of a new world. .Our hearts beat wildly with anticipation and joy - joy, tinged however, with sadness for the memories of what we leave behind. Through this portal we shall pass as men and women, eyes shining brightly toward the new paths we shall each tread in the business world. Three years ago we entered Commerce as uncertain, frightened boys and girls struggling with the door of a senior high school. As time went on, we passed through many doors - doors leading to classrooms to which we gave little thought except when they were closedp then we heaved a sigh of relief. These uniform and strong doors seemed always to represent compulsion, but in retrospect we can see that they were the strong doors of knowledge and learningp for through them we entered the rooms where we were trained for our vocations in commercial and trades work. There also are those special doors we opened when to our pride and wonderment we found ourselves in honor societies: Arista, Skull and Key, and Alpha Beta Pi. During the three years, we have matured and developed mentally to become men and women trained to take our places in the world of business. Without having passed through these doors, we should not have gained in poise, self-assurance, and skill, those assets which spell the difference between adulthood and childhood. Many more doors will be prominent in our future lives . . . the fast re- volving doors which whirl us into a complex business environment, the all- important door leading to our first job, the door of expectation as we wait for a promotion, the many glass doors which reveal our dreams for the future. As we go through each one in its turn, we shall have developed, progressed, be- come more adept and confident and more prominent too, in our chosen work. A succession of doors, one after another, open and close upon happiness, joy, disappointment, and failure before the final door closes upon us. Since they represent all that is to come, let us look forward to the door of graduation as the first step toward our goal. We encountered, now and then, many difficulties and, as we left school for the day, how often did we wish that it would blow up or burn up during the night! How many mornings we hated to go through those educational doors! Didn't we despise the place and everything connected with it? We were per- fectly normal. Everybody had those grim days. Those school days have flown fast and we are no longer kids, Now we remember the opportunity we had to improve ourselves. We look back upon the closed doors of English class, history, math or steno with regret that they are closing forever behind us. How little we realized from day to day the importance of each classroom door, for each has played its part in our path to the outside world and success. Catherine Didio, '47 'X DEDICATION -2 R ff, MAY B. WOOD LAURA C. STIDD 4 HE CLASS OF l947 has been fortunate in having two teachers who have helped them through typing and shorthand for the three years We have been at Commerce. Not only have they taught us Well but they have lent their efforts to every venture of our school life with Whole hearted support and cooperation. We proudly dedicate our Ledger to these two friends, Miss May B. Wood and Miss Laura C. Stidd, whose memory We shall cherish through- out the years. ,L fl 'Blix B Write on your doors the saying wise and old, Be bold! Be bold! and everywhere-Be boldg Be not too bold! HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW t RALPH HOWARD BAKER BS., B.C.S., New York University Principal High School of Commerce Yonkers, N. Y. You have wisely chosen Doors as the theme of your l947 Ledger.
