As we all kno our school can’t possibly be defined in a few simple words. The best way to define the High School of Commerce is with its contents. After all, the contents of something is what makes that something exactly what it is. And we are what makes Commerce the great school that it is. We the students and faculty. “We, the Class of 78” Laura Walter and The Caduceus Staff We Enter Through The Door With Bright Hopes For Tomorrow ... We have to stop meeting like this! Geter oor Hurry up, ball! nog Nothing is getting by me! Is it over yet? This year’s baseball team finished the season with two wins and ten loses. One of which was a_ thirteen-to-ten victory over our arch rivals Putnam. Heading the raider attack thoughout the year was Randy Mascaro, Vinnie San- taniello, and Dave Paro. Coach Burgess is looking for better balance in his attack for next year. 21 22 “You call that a pitch?” GIRLS SOFTBALL The bench warmers in action. The girls’ softball team were subjected to unsuc- cessful season sporting a 5-10 win-loss record. After being defeated by East Longmeadow, a powerhouse in the area, by an outrageous 31-7, the Raidres showed steady improvement. The second game playing against East Longmeadow became the highlight of the year. The Raiders lost in extra innings by a very close margin of 10-9. According to Coach Greenleaf, good pitching could have turned the season around to a winning one. a so on ei ns oe “Watch out Carmen.” “Wow, did you see how far that went?” 23 24 Get the point? “Do the hustle” BOYS TRACK “T’ll bend over backwards for COMMERCE” The boys’ track squad had a fairly suc- cessful season ending with a record of 5 wins and 5 losses, with two meets being lost by only a few points. Louis Jones came in first place in the city meet and third in the Western Mass. meet for the long jump event. Mark Whitley, for the 220 yard dash, placed fourth; while An- toine Hines, for the 440 yard dash, placed sixth in the Western Mass. meet. Others worthy of recognition are: Joe Es- cobar, Doug Johnson, Erwin Driskell, Wayne Tait, Dale Provost, Jeff Thomas, Rich Schmoke, Tom Minie, and Leo Best. ee COPAERC cOMMmERt; — FIRST ROW: Todd Jenkins, Jeff Thomas, Mike Green, Carl Lewis, Louis Jones, Eric Lancaster, Antoine Hines, Erwin Driskell. The High School of Commerce Girl’s track team had a record of two wins, one tie, and three losses. Ethel Burge, most versatile girl, had an excellant year for the raiders. She competed in four events and showed outstanding performances in all. Bon- nie Nelsson was the most improved runner, bring- ing her time from twenty minutes to ten minutes in the two mile run. The Bionic Women for Com- merce was Joan Walters. She alone competed in the shotput and discuss throw, and showed unbelievable strength. Kathy Minnie was most dedicated. She really had that Raider Spirit! 27 28 GOLF The undermanned golf team fought valiantly to maintain some show of competition against the oth- er teams but were unsuccessful. Tournament, which they have captured for two consecutive years. The Red Raiders have also won the city title twice and the Drury Tournament three times, all consecutively and are heavily favored to make a clean sweep of both the Western Mass. and the State Championships for an unprec- edented three years in a row. Mark “Kool-Aid” Hall has been named by the press as the best high school player in Massachusetts. He holds the school and city scoring records. Mark is assisted in the backcourt by clutch guard Tallie Brinson. Allan “Big Al” Williams and Dar- ryl “Big D” Best dominated both the offensive and defensive boards. As Juniors we took one step forward but still had no way of knowing where our dreams could lead us. And now, as Seniors, we are about to close these doors behind us and open a new one --- one that will take us beyond into a world of “GREAT EXPECTATIONS.” FRESHMAN YEAR The class of ‘1978’ entered Commerce on September 8, 1975, with 625 eager freshman. Then, we were ready to face new challenges and accept new learning abilities. High school was a new experience for all of us, and we spent our first few months meeting and learning about each other. We were introduced to G.O.. COMMERCE (the school paper), and our first and most competitive rally. On November 21, 1975 the freshman elections were held. Keeping with the times, women’s lib set in and an all girl slate was selected to lead us through the year. Barbara Burton reigned as president with her under- study Kim Cogman, as vice-president, Lee Trauschke as Secretary. The student council members were: Darlene Brown, Denise Margara, Charlene Moffett and Lisa Pilon. As for sports during this grand year, our football team’s season ended with a 3-5 record. The Basketball team won the Western Mass and State Championship. Wrestling had outstanding wrestlers as Tom Wery, Brian Thomas, Keith Partlow and Bob Rose. The girls Basketball team took city title with a 6-0 season. Freshman Kim McLaurin and Jennifer Miller filled in when injured to help win key games. Helping the team on top were Freshmen Barbara Allen, Gail Burke, Karen Ware, and Donna Wilson. Yes, we were eager and we were entering a future that lead us towards ‘a point of no return’. JUNIOR YEAR On September 8, 1976 the class of 78 entered Commerce once again — this time as Juniors. We were about to play a new roll that led us to a path of our long and winding road. On November 1, 1976 the distribution of our class rings were an asset to our high school ego. As the rallies went on, our voices grew louder, as did our class spirit. We held elections and our officers were: President Janet Butler, Vice President Jelicia Smith, Secretary Darlene Brown, Student council members- Denise Margara, Karen Ware, Michelle Speer and Joanne Erey. For the second year in a row the class of 78 had an all girl political party. As for sports, for the first time at the High School of Commerce, a girl soccer team was organized with coach Adelina DiSanti. The girls completed a four wins, seven lost record. The Boys basketball team won city, state, and Western Mass. Division II for the second year in a row, and the spirit of Christmas was with us as we went on to win the Christmas Tournament. The Girls’ Basketball season was also a good one; they took over the city championship with the best record last year - fifteen wins and four losses. The United States Postal Service granted that our Newspaper COMMERCE be changed officially on November 19, 1976 to the EXECUTIVE. On April 29, 1977, The Junior Prom which was held at the Oaks Inn took place. The theme for the prom was “This must be Heaven” and it sure was heaven, with Queen Margarita Sanabria and her court Carmen Arroyo, Elaine Glennie, Carol Guay and Kim Cogman. In June the Class of 78 left happily knowing that next year would be our best year. SENIOR YEAR On September 7, 1978 we reentered Commerce:as Seniors. As last we reached the high point of our days in high school. Out of the 625 eager freshmen that entered three years ago only 425 of us came this far. Our most exciting year was about to begin. On the first day we received our first status symbol — our senior hats. It wasn’t until our first rally that we actually felt like the elders of the school. We welcomed the freshman with a large banner, but our voices still rang true. We elected Scott Walker as our leader, Michelle Moore as our vice-president and Darlene Brown as our secretary. To head up the student council was Denise Margara, on staff were George Rivera, Greta Waldron, Sidney Burston, Barbara Allen, Leroy Williams. With all the excitment this still meant we had to work at our responsibilities; and in the seventeen-year history of the National Honor Society, never has there been so many two-year members as this year’s record of twenty-three. Two new faculty members joined the staff. Replacing Miss Burke in Home Economics department was Miss Maura Modlish; and Miss Mary Massucci, replaced Mrs. Frederica Vaughn who retired last year after nineteen years at the High School of Commerce. On October 24, the High School of Commerce pitched in to do its share to help diminish the shortage of blood in the annual bloodmobile. Miss Hogan Mrs. Haley organized the students and faculty members in this endeavor. On January 13, President Scott Walker managed to produce a Senior Dance despite the apathy of the student body. This took place, although the weather was stormy on that Friday the thirteenth, at the Hill Jets Center. All proceeds went to the senior class treasury. Fund raising made this year a hit when cupids’ arrow hit Commerce right in the heart. The senior class held a Valentines Day Carnation Sale. The students bought carnations to add a good sum to the seniors’ fund. On May 10, 1978, a Senior Class Trip took place. New York was the scene of an adventure to see the broadway production of “The WIZ”. Then on to dinner in one of the eastcoasts’ most fascinating cities. Commerce had a record for sports this year, but for the first time in 25 years, we managed an undefeated football team, which added greatly to the spirit of ‘78’. The Raiders went head on into the division championship, but unfortunately, however, were defeated 2-0 by a safety. Three players were placed on the All-Western Mass. Teams. Walter McSweeney made the first team as tackle and Noah Borders and Scott Walker made second team backfield. The Commerce hockey team went on the ice despite the fact that in the beginning there were only 11 players, three of them were goalies. The raiders skated to a 4-16 record. Mike Orzulak’s 32 goals put him in 9th position in Wright division scorers. For the first year Commerce introduced a ski club. Headed by Mrs. O’Dell 11 girls signed up to take on the slopes. They ended the season with a trip to Brodie Mountain. For the third year Commerce’s boy’s basketball time earned its way to the Western Mass tournament. Their record for the season was 18-2. Their loses were to two prep school teams. The outstanding senior players were, Mark Hall, Tallie Brinson, and Alan Williams. After our final day at Commerce, Class Day, May 12 was the beginning to our traditional senior events. The banquet, May 3 being held at the Oaks Inn. The senior prom, on May 20 at the Twin Hills country Club with Margarita Sanabria reigning as queen. Her court Joyce Elmasion, Sheri Gowens, Andrea Pinkett, and Michelle Spear. The class of “78” will be graduating on June 7, 1978. As our years at Commerce end, the Senior Class would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the administration and our fellow classmates.
