Commerce. Spirit Commerce! how well we remember those years, Opening our eyes to laughter and tears, Making. new friends then going our separate ways, Meeting again and re-living those memorable days, Exciting events that play a main role, Recalling the pictures and the smiles we stole. Commerce! we walked those steps that took us far. Each of us knows now where we are. Spirit is raising our voices high, Pushing our teams to glory’s eye. In times when deadlines are to be met, Reaching for something extra at the threat. Intense moments of joy when they praise our teams, Taking the bows and knowing what it means. : Dorothy Schultz 1977 CADUCEUS High School Of Commerce Springfield, Mass. Being freshman, of course, wasn't easy but we yearned for knowledge and a sense of belonging. Being introduced to the school activities such as G.O., competitive sports, and rallies magnified our interests, After our elections we went into full swing organizing our future plans and also our junior year. The president Debra Cousins, along with her staff vice president Cindy Stone and secretary Diane Burton and the treasurer Karen Rush, had a very successful year along with the members of the student council backing them all the way William Rodriguez, Deidra Sams, Susan Smith, Sandy Snyder. JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 8, 1975 we entered Commerce once again, but this time as Juniors. We greeted our old friends, upper- classmates, and teachers, and we also had our first chance to welcome the freshmen class of ''78''. We knew this year would be a little difficult but also exciting. One of the first exciting moments were when received our class rings, we were now official Juniors of the High School of Commerce. With much talk of 'Women's Lib , the class of '77 was headed by an all female slate: leading the class to a most prominent and challenging year. President Susan Kelly, backed by her staff, Vice Presiden t Cheryl Ray Secretary Diane Burton and the Student Councilwomen, Yvette Flakes, Gail Walls, Wendy Marchese, Sandy Snyder and Debbie Cousins, had a busy schedule planning future events to occupy their Junior Year. The first of such events was ''The Junior Car Wash that raised a total of $64.00 which started off the class fund and other various activities, but the Juniors were not to be denied a good time. As their classmates looked on many Juniors dominated the sports activities, supplying the backbone for many of the ath- letic teams, the Juniors led the way in school spirit and participation. The football team ended their season with a record of 3 wins 5 losses, the Girls Varsity Basketball team held the City Championship with a record of 6 wins no losses. And the high- light of the athletic year was the great success of the Varsity Boys Basketball Team, the team won The Drury Christmas Tournament, The Division II Western Mass. Tournament, and for the first time we were the first school in the city to win a State Basketball Championship. The Raiders defeated Dorchester High School 90-84. The Lime Lite Occasion of the year was the Junior Prom held April 30, 1976. For the first time ever there were two Prom Queens, Renee Frisby and Susan Snyder with their Court Donna Antaya, Maria Zavala, Marjorie Cheeks and Anita Davis, they definitely made the occasion a ''Stairway to Heaven . It was also the first time any school to have a Disc Jockey to sup- ply the music for the evening. Although the Juniors faced many times together good and bad, they were prepared to take a seat in the middle aisle when they would return the following year as SENIORS. SENIOR YEAR On September 8, 1976, we the class of '77 entered the High School of Commerce. As Seniors we realized this would be our last and most exciting year of all. We started the year off by receiving our senior hats and welcoming the Freshman. At the end of our Junior year, the class officers were elected for our Senior year. Those elected were: President, Susan Kelly for the second year; Vice-President, Linda Gadson; and Secretary, Sandy Snyder. Student Council members were Dale Brace, Laurie Bulley, Yvette Flakes, Wendy Marchese, Karen Colonna, and Betsy Bondioli. As for equal rights, girls had the first in the history of Commerce to have a girls soccer team, captained by Miss DiSanti. m Se eset 10, we had our second student faculty game. It was a smashing success. The students, of course, defeated e faculty. We close out our Senior year with a bang. How can we forget Class Day, May 13, and the honors bestowed upon our best students; the Senior Banquet and Dance, May 14; the Senior Prom, May 21, with the many memories of that night; Frances Wray was Queen, and in her court were Anita Davis, Sandy Haynes, Wendy Marchese, Lorie LaRoche and finally, Graduation, June 7, the night for which we had waited for many long, happy years. Although we have gone, we leave with many fond memories of the High School of Commerce and are looking forward to seeing each other again at our first reunion. SPORTS BOWLING Varsity bowlers for three years, Albert LaBroad, Edward Getting ready to try to beat the faculty in a special final Manchester, and Karen Colonna were the 1977 co-captains. match are Pedro Rivera, Tamra LaBroad, Carolyn Colonna, LaBroad and Manchester had the highest and third highest Daniel O'Connell, and Edwin Crespo. Other members of the averages respectively in the league. 1977 bowling teams were Steve Choiniere, Pablo Diaz, Debra Gore, and Tamra Hanson. The 1977 varsity bowlers came within two pins of defeating Cathedral in a key game that would have meant the City Championship. The team posted an excellent 49-15 overall record but lost the championship roll to Classical. 4NGr i= Youth vs. Age. Long years of faculty experience proved more than enough to answer the challenge of the J. V. and varsity student bowlers. Karen Colonna FOOTBALL The 1976 Commerce Football team had one of its best seasons in years with a winning record of 4-2. Defense is the name of the game; and the proof of this is that only four touchdowns were scored against the defense in six games, with outstanding games from Barry Brown, Art Robinson, Greg Blackwell, Rich Talbot, Aron Cole, Bruce Jones, Walt McSweeney, Jim Roses, Erwin Dorskell, Scott Walder, Noah Borders. This defensive unit played hard and well making up the best defensive unit in the city. Offensively it took the team a while to get going, but Craig Butler, Tyrone Sanders, Aaron Cole and allthe other backs started to gel; and as a result, they scored 100 points in their last three games. David Smith did an outstanding job as a kicker and pass receiver-both he and Ricky Scott came up with the big plays when necessary. Coach Ryan has high hopes for a successful year in 1977 with many veterans retuming. Players who deserve credit for outstanding efforts are Jeff Malloy, Kim Case, Gregg Blackwell, Barry Brown, Art Robinson and to put it mildly-''The whole team. We're off! cant 6 SRA pa A NRE a ef Wm. Their effort was rewarded when they battled to a 3-3 tie with Chicopee Comp. Goalie Bill Roberts was outstanding in making some key saves to assure the Raiders of a tie. Out- standing wrestlers were Paul Walker, Mark Whitley, Mitch Johnson and Wayne Tait. The team this year was made up of freshman and juniors and things look good for next year. Some highlights were Erwin Driscoll's pin to win the match against St. Joseph's, Paul Walker with a 24 second pin, and Mark Whit- ley and Mitch Johnson winning all their matches and going undefeated.
