The year began with the issuance of Freshman Handbooks and the new School Handbook for Parents and Students which outlined the rights and responsibilities of students. Freshmen were also introduced to G.O., rallies, club meetings, and various athletic activities. In December Freshman elections were held. Voted into office were: Lannette Wilkerson, President; Kim Rousseau, VicePresident; and Marisa Brown, Secretary. Student Council members were Robin Brown, Christine Glennie, Elizabeth Green, Rachel Joffe, Valerie King, and Louise Patrakis. Elected Representatives from each homeroom served on the Freshman Executive Board. During the year, for the first time, Freshmen were invited to the Senior Christmas Dance. Two months later, students and faculty planned and participated in Black History Week activities, which were held February 11 through 15. The rock group, “First Gear”, gave a school-wide concert April 8 which helped perk everyone up after the long winter months. At this time, competitive auditions were held for places in the Concert Choir; eight members were selected for this coveted award. Each of the sports teams excelled during their seasons, expecially the J. V. Basketball team, whose record was 20-1. Later, in the spring of the year, students were invited to the Civic Center to attend the Skills of the ’70’s Program sponsored by the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. Time seemed to pass quickly and soon elections were again held for class offices. Elected to represent the Junior class were: Denise Catellier, President; Marisa Brown, Vice-President; and Abygail Gonzalez, Secretary. Patricia Alli, Sandy Bartish, Zenaida Gomez, Sherry Harrington, Debra Lee and Cindy Robbins comprised the Student Council. As our Freshman year drew to a close, we looked ahead to a year that would be more challenging and rewarding for each and everyone of us. Class History — Junior Year On September 6, 1974 the class of ’76 after an all-too-short summer vacation, stepped through Commerce’s doors as Juniors. We lingered in the halls greeting old friends and welcoming members of the Freshmen class, helping them get adjusted to our now familiar surroundings. We tried to give them guidance but they soon learned it was better to ask a faculty member for directions (A faculty member wouldn't tell them Room 318 was on the ground floor). We were now entering the challenge of skilled subjects; shorthand, bookkeeping and typewriting. Also, participation in activities began with the March of Dimes Walk-a Thon in October with students and teachers completing twenty-five miles. A successful bloodmobile drive was held. Students from the Art Department contributed to the Bicentennial celebration by exhibiting paintings and murals of Springfield’s historical places and moments. The National Honor Society initiated an in-school tutoring program. In November, probably the most important and memorable event, was the day our class rings arrived. We walked tall and proud displaying our rings. The Concert Choir, always in popular demand, performed at City Hall in conjunction with the Mayor’s annual Christmas message; this marked their first time on television. Professional groups entertained during the year, ‘““Long Island Sound”, ‘Maryville College”, and “Up with People”. Half of the year had already gone by. Rating cards were the big issue at this time. We would be rated on our character. These rating cards oat probably determine whether we would be accepted in a college or procure a job. Now the moment we were anxiously awaiting had finally come. Our Junior Prom held in April at the Oaks Inn, was the social event of the year. Our class spirit was an indispensable factor in this success. Denise Frisby reigned as prom queen with her appointed court: Helene Duchano, Laurie Ely, Margarita Medina, and Annie Rivera. All of our sports teams, (football, basketball, baseball, soccer, hockey, bowling, golf and wrestling) enjoyed good seasons. Commerce’s spirit both for participants and spectators was outstanding. The girls and boys basketball teams won invitations to the Western Massachusetts Tournament. In May elections for Senior Class officers were held. Elected were Class President, Steve Judycki; Vice-President, Marisa Brown; Secretary, Sharon Smith. Student Council members were Antoinette Dionne, Ann Green, Kim Hardy, Adelina Rivera, Cindy Robbins, and Robin Timothy. We also had the excitement of knowing we were ordering our senior hats. Then came Class Day when we sang “Morning has Broken” to the seniors as we awaited our first time to sit “center aisle,” a symbol of seniority. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 3, 1975, we returned to school, realizing this would be our last and most exciting and challenging year. The excitement began with all seniors obtaining their senior hats and welcoming the Freshmen. Our ’76 bicentennial hats designated our class as historically unique. Our democratic way of involving the entire class necessitated our president holding the first class meeting to determine a suggested change in senior class activities; a combined prom and banquet. However, tradition prevailed; the prom and banquet will be separate. Our first accomplishment occurred when we placed 118 seniors on the honor roll. Mr. Sweeney extended congratulations, commenting that this was the first time in his ten years as principal that such an outstanding academic record was achieved. Our eagerness for community and school service is exemplified by participation in activities: Toys for Tots, sponsored by the Commerce staff; the Junior Red Cross staff supervised the collection for the Guatemala earthquake victims; Participated in two bloodmobiles, a Salvation Army Drive, and the Carnation sale for the Africian Relief Fund. Our Concert Choir again responded to a Command Performance at City Hall. The National Honor Society continued its tutorial program. Commerce’s Girls’ Basketball Team did an outstanding job and was truly awarded the recognition that they so greatly deserved when they were awarded city championship. The boys’ basketball team earned runner-up for the city championship. They also won the Drury Christmas Basketball Tournament. As usual, in all the other sports (hockey, soccer, baseball, football, bowling, wrestling) the Commerce spirit prevailed. After our final assembly, Class Day, May 14, the traditional senior events begin. The Class Banquet and dance is scheduled for May 15 at the Oaks. The senior prom will be held on May 22, at Twin Hill Country Club, with our lovely queen, Brenda Pickney, and her charming court: Margarita Medina, Robin Provost, Annie Rivera, and Carmela Ruggiero. The Class of ’76 will be graduated on June 7. The Senior Class of ’76 would like to say ‘Thank You” to Mr. Sweeney, Dr. Midura, Mr. Troy, Mr. Basili, the faculty, and personnel of the High School of Commerce for guiding us through our three years.
