As we entered our homerooms, school handbooks were issued to each of us. We were then introduced to such Commerce activities as G.O. athlet- ics, and various clubs. Our first real involvement in school activities began in December when our class attended an assembly to introduce us to the candidates running for Freshmen class elections. Elected were President, Vaughn Francis; Vice-president, Donald King; and Secretary, Marcia Johnson. Student Coun- cil members were Maureen Kapinos, Kathy Nekitopoulos, Sue Henderson, Elizabeth Nosaluk, Maria Balgassi, and Filomena Vivenzio. Our sports rallies were memorable ones as we cheered our boys on. Who could forget the class competitions? We yelled ourselves hoarse, but the seniors somehow always won. We were proud to be Commercites when, in March, the school was notified that it had attained another ten-year accreditation. This was an honor bestowed on very few area high schools. The Springfield School Committee, after many meetings with students, faculty, and administrators, granted smoking privileges on a trial basis to the city’s four senior high schools. Our basketball team made it all the way to the finals in the Western Mass. Tournament, only to fall victim to Pittsfield in a close game. The hock- ey team, although not as fortunate, also took part in play-off competition. As the year drew to a close, we looked forward to our Junior year under the capable leadership of newly elected class officers, President, Sue Hen- derson; Vice-president, Brenda Burt; and Secretary, Kathy Nekitopoulos. Student council members were: Linda Hamilton, Elizabeth Nosaluk, Debbie Talbot, Maria Balgassi, and Dianne Maragoudakis. JUNIOR YEAR September the Sth, 1973, the class of ‘’’75”’ stepped through Commerce’s doors as Juniors. Now accustomed to Commerce’s rules, we lingered in the hall getting reacquainted with old friends until Mr. Sweeney’s familiar voice could be heard saying, ‘Report to your homerooms! The five-min- ute bell has rung.”’ Soon after, our symbols of being a Junior arrived in the form of class rings. We were now full-fledged upper classmen. Our class began, in ear- nest, to get involved in school activities. First was the ‘Skills of the ’70’s’’ program directed by the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. An idea was proposed by the President of the Junior class, Sue Henderson, to establish a Blood Mobile program for the high school students in Springfield. The schools were united; and together, they produced a successful Blood Drive. The student council, in an effort to attract more people to the Christmas dance, ruled that we could come stag if we wished. The dance was fairly successful, and all who attended enjoyed themselves. The student council also held a successful Christmas drive for the Salvation Army; they collected 60 cans of food for needy people. All our sports teams had successful seasons, both girls’ and boys’ teams. The end of the school year was signalled by the Junior Prom with Margarita Diaz as the Queen. Her court consisted of Lucy Testa, Kathy Cough- lin, Laura Verteramo, Julie Penman, and Muriel Borders. Then came Class Day, where we sang John Denver’s “Sunshine” to the parting Seniors, and for the first time sat in the special center aisle seats which are symbols of seniority. SENIOR YEAR On Setember 6, 1974, the doors of Commerce opened for all students; but for Seniors, this would be their last and most exciting year. The ex- citement began with all Seniors obtaining their senior hats and welcoming the Freshmen. At the end of our Junior year, the class officers were elected for our Senior year. Those elected were: President, Valerie Bass; Vice-president, Lin- da Hamilton; and Secretary, Cynthia Hall. Student Council members were Sandy Stone, Elminia Falcon, Pam Duncan, Grace Dyson, Leo Williams, Cheryl Gillette, and Brenda Burt. We all had a pleasant surprise with Seniors being awarded a free seventh period to use in a constructive and educational manner. It was the first time in Commerce's history that all were awarded such a privilege. As the year progressed, our spirits were uplifted by rallies and other successful projects such as raising money for the African relief fund and a blood mobile drive that was successful for the second consecutive year. A lot of us were on T.V. when the Navy rock band, the Long Island Sound, came to perform. As for Women’s Lib, Commerce's girls basketball team did an outstanding job and was truly awarded the recognition that they so greatly de- served when they were awarded a berth in the Western Mass. Basketball tournament. As usual, in all the other sports (hockey, soccer, baseball, football, basketball, and wrestling) the Commerce spirit prevailed. We closed out our Senior year with a flourish. How could we forget Class Day, May 16, and the many honors bestowed on our best students; the Senior Banquet and Dance, May 17; the Senior Prom, May 31, with the many memories of that night, Margarita Diaz, Queen, and her court: Laura Verteramo, Laura Malvezzi, Narvis Fryar, Julie Mitchell, and Kathy Coughlin; and finally, Graduation, the night for which we had waited for many long, happy years. Although we have gone, we leave with many fond memories of the High School of Commerce and are looking forward to seeing each other again at our first reunion. BHE CITY LIBRARY SPRINGFIELD, MASS. The NHS was very lucky in being graced with the presence of Mr. Harry Melikian, who is a former stu- dent of Commerce and member of the NHS. Mr. Melikian discussed the need for effort in all things and his greatfulness to those at Commerce who helped him along his way to success. Mr. Sweeney also gave a few remarks and his words were absorbed and enjoyed by all. After there was a reception for the members and their guests and refreshments were served. The National Honor Society controls the High School of Commerce store. There are bookcovers, pencils, pens, notebooks for sale.
