Coldly, Sadly Descends the Autumn Evening. ae 2 :. Lai had ph dh deadbeat 3 = 2 A flower in full bloom is the end of the beginning. A harvest moon risen on a crisp night is the end of the beginning. Through dedication, hard work, and staff coopera- tion, monthly deadlines are met and a new issue of the paper is born. Staff effort has led to numerous awards for excel- ence among school papers on a national level and citations from local school officials for a high-qual- ity publication. Advisor for ‘Commerce’ is Miss Adelina DiSanti whose endless efforts in teaching makes a new staff possible every year. 41 The Yearbook Staff of 1974 Though deadlines, lost pictures, and broken rulers may have given the editorial staff of Caduseus many headaches, another yearbook has been completed. The staff consists of six juniors and eight seniors who enjoy working with each other, know what has to be done, and do it. The Raiders had a record of 3-15-2, however, they lost 11 games by one goal which isn’t bad for a team with only two seniors. Marty Ryan and Mike Sullivan were the seniors this year. Ryan, an all Western Mass. candidate, is one of the best players to have played at Commerce and plans to go to Michigan State. Mike Sullivan was a real dig- ger who always gave 100% and one of the best hustlers on the team. Coach Burgess feels the team played well and improved greatly over the season. Some of us were lucky enough to have upperclassmen for friends to escort us to our homerooms. On our first day, we had our first assembly, which prom- ised a great future and jobs or college when we graduate if we kept up good attendance and marks. Also explained to us were the procedures and functions of our school, such as G.O. and Commerce. Our first month was enlightened when Lt. Governor Don- ald Dwight spoke to us about state government and let us out of school early. Later that week, we were entertained by the Spurrlows who are a famous musical group. The next activity we were involved in was the election rally held in December. Elected were: President, Jo-Anne Provost; Vice President, Annette Dodson; Secretary, Roberta Peet. Student Council members were: Jeannine Barcome, Linda Bel- rose, Sandra Jiles, Mary Ann McMahon, Marilynn Miller and Cheryl Rancore. As Freshmen, we were honored to be among the first group of underclassmen to be invited to the Senior Christmas Dance, which was held December 17, at the Stonehaven Mo- tor Inn. Also in December, we had a much appreciated vaca- tion and came back with a little more confidence. In March, the Commerce Raider Machine became Western Massachusetts Champs. Two months later, a car wash was held at Zayre’s parking lot on Boston Road. Our efforts gained $62.00 for our class treasury. For the first time in the history of Commerce, Freshmen and Juniors were allowed to observe Class Day Activities. So ended our Freshman Year and we left, looking forward with anticipation to our Junior Year, knowing very well that it will not be an easy one — for many of us a year of hard study ahead. Roberta Peet Mary Lyons Junior Year On September 6, 1972, members of our Junior Class stepped into familiar halls of the High School of Commerce, looking down on the newcoming Freshmen that reminded us so much of our first arrival at Commerce. After becoming accustomed to the regular schedule of classes, events began to happen. First, the Freshmen Hand- books, explaining the school rules and activities and School Handbooks, compiled for parents and students, were distributed. Then elections of class officers took place. The Junior Class Officers elected were: Jo-Anne Provost, President; Lin- da Harden, Vice-President; and Marilyn Miller, Secretary. Student Council members were: Connie Henry, Threse Quill, Cheryl Rancore, Linda Rezzani, Donna Stephen, and Theresa Winters. Soon, the class rings ordered in our Freshman year were delivered and the Juniors walked tall and proud showing off their gleaming rings. This year, two evaluations were taking place: (1) The Stu- dent Rating by the teachers to the counselors and (2) the Commerce Evaluation By The New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Everyone hoped for another ten-year accreditation. Although Commerce lost their basketball coach, the City gained a new Mayoral Aide, Mr. Henry Payne. Mr. Payne was then replaced by Mr. Michael Martin. Our second car wash was a success financially as well as socially. We all had fun. Smoking privileges were also gained. The end of the school year was signalled by the Junior Prom with Myrna Rivera elected as Prom Queen. Proudly at- tending her were: Darlene Bryant, Debbie Sibilia, Beverly Barber, Sally White, Donna Stephen, and Lynne LaBelle. At Class Day, we sang to the Seniors, a parting song to the tune of the ‘‘Love Theme’ from Romeo and Juliet. The year came to an end with Juniors envious of the gradu- ating seniors, but patiently anticipating the coming of their last — the final year — at the High School of Commerce. Theresa Winters Darlene Bryant Senior Year On September 5, 1974, proud Seniors filed into the High School of Commerce for the long-awaited final year. Stop- ping briefly to greet our friends, we hurried to get the symbol of our seniority, our Senior hats. Something new was instituted into our program. Any Se- nior with a 7th period study was given permission to leave the building. Many Seniors were not assigned to a study hall. This was our reward for helping receive our ten-year accredi- tation. We all became very proud of this fact and through a combined effort, strove to maintain the high standard at- tained by our school. Senior class elections were a surprise. Inspite of Women’s Lib, the Senior class gave the honor as president to Joseph Boyle. Elected as vice-president was Sue LeClerc and as secre- tary, Lynne LaBelle. Student council members were Deborah Barton, Donna Bass, Connie Henry, and Theresa Winters. In keeping with the other high schools, we finally got an additional assistant principal and we were very lucky to get Mr. Gene Basili. Football season was exciting. The highlight of the season was when Commerce beat Classical. All our sports had a good season; soccer, hockey, bowling, and basketball. The basketball team, of course, excelled as usual. Soon the holiday season was upon us. The Annual Toy Drive went into effect and toys were contributed, repaired, and distributed. The Christmas Dance held at the Civic Center was one of the most successful in the past few years. Music was provid- ed by the Dynamic Desitations. Before we knew it, measurements for caps and gowns were being taken and only a few weeks of school remained. Early dismissal for seniors was set for May 15. Class Day, May 10, and the Prom, on May 25. Class Day was followed by the Banquet, which was held on May 11th. Reigning as Queen of the Prom was Debra Sibilia, surrounded by her beautiful at- tendants, Eugenia Pianovich, Pamela Wilson, Carmen Natal, Mary Cole, Gwen Godbolt, and Debbie Racine. At last the day we were working for arrived, June 5 — Graduation Day for the Class of ‘74. We would like to extend to our fellow classmates best wishes for good health and good fortune and continued good friendships in the coming years. We would like to express our gratitude to the faculty of the High School of Commerce for their understanding and to our assistant principals, Dr. Gladys Midura, Mr. John Troy, and Mr. Gene Basili for their help and guidance at all times and to Mr. Philip Sweeney, our beloved Principal, our deepest thanks.
