Last of all we, the senior class, wish to point out that this really is a great school; and we hope that the frosh and the kids in the future years will keep it that way. FRESHMAN 669 Freshmen walked through the doors of the High School of Commerce for the first time on September 9, 1970. Commerce provided a great challenge for all of us. The education that lay in store, the new friends we had yet to meet, and our anticipated graduation in 1973; were waiting for us that first day. We were introduced to Guidance assemblies, G.O., the Trading Post, “Commerce,” the school newspaper, and all of the other activities Corn- merce had to offer. During the fall of our year the football team suffered a dissapointing season. The basketball team had a mediocre season. On December 2, a rally was held for the election of our Freshman Class Officers. The following day the Class elected John Wilson, President; Roxanne Overton, Vice-President; and Mary Custard, Secretary; Student Council members included, Edward Donais, Judy Greco, Debbie Passon, Donna Skrabely, Joe Stanek, and Elton Williams. Not long after elections, a much needed Christmas vacation had arrived. Returning to start the New Year off right, we were already into our winter sports. Our hockey team had won their divisional title. On April 6, we were introduced to our first ““Capers’’. It was quite successful, with various groups such as the ““Rag Dolls,” “Enticers,” and “‘In- ternationals,” making up the bill of fare. It was not long afterwards that we had taken our first giant step from the balcony to the side aisles on the ground floor. Class elections had been held again, and for our Junior year John Wilson was re-elected President, Maria Gardner, Vice-President, and Mary Custard, Secretary. Student council members were Debbie Passon, Joe Stanek, Elton Williams, Judy Gonnello and Michele Rhodes. Our Freshman year had come to an end, and we left on our summer vacation looking forward to a great Junior year. Many friends were made our first year. We hoped to see everyone return in the fall. JUNIOR YEAR On September 9, 1971, after an all-too-short summer vacation terminated, we returned to Commerce as Juniors under the leadership of elected class officers and student council members. After being in school a short time, our class rings arrived and we began to truly feel like Juniors. The football team had an interesting season with help of Junior Classmen: William Wimberly, Brett Snowden, Norman Sherfield, David Wright, Kevin Ross, Richard Roberts, Jimmy Troy, Eugene Couser, William Byrd and John Wilson. The basketball team had a phenomenal year winning Western Mass. and the Interschool League with the help of Junior classmen Mark Caulton, Ernest Kenney, Julius Lewis, Charles Crump, and Van Thomas. The bowling team also encountered many victories, but not without the help of Junior stars, Richard Booth, Bob Allard, and Mike Grady who lat- er became captain of the team. In December the National Honor Society elected Junior Officers: President, Nancy Kane; Vice President, Barbara Blount; Treasurer, Karen Cebula, and Secretary, Judy Gonnello. These officers and members were soon engaged in their important tasks of selling bookcovers and pennants. Many of us were anxiously awaiting the Junior Prom and our hopes were finally fulfilled in late April. The Junior Prom was held at the High Point Motor Inn. Jamie Yates reigned as prom queen with her court Adrienne Bailey, Barbara Blount, Deborah Williams, and Carol Cusson. Music for the prom was provided by the Dynamic Desatations. In early May the Commerce newspaper staff editors were appointed, Florence Caulton, was appointed Editor in Chief. Towards the end of our Junior year, we held elections for Sr. Class Officers. Elected were Class President, Kevin Ross; Class Vice-President, Barbara Anderson; Class Secretary Debbie Passon. The Student Council officers elected were Elton Williams, President; Deborah Williams, Vice- President; and Maureen Filault, Secretary. The other elected members were Celeste Hale, Joe Stanek, and Ortrud Bellafiore. SENIORS When we returned to Commerce, our first day as seniors was made even a little more special by our senior hats. During the assembly on the first day, as Class President, Kevin Ross welcomed us back, a sense of pride and accomplishment swelled inside of us. Our numbers had dwindled from 669, our first day as freshmen, to 515, our first day as seniors. Most of us were glad to be back and not among the fallen 154. The first big class activity was a money-making project which was superbly organized by Barbara Anderson, Senior Class Vice-President. While the president was involved in fall sports, Barbara demonstrated the leadership and organizing qualities she possessed. The result was a car wash which made a net profit of $102.00, one of the most successful car washes in Commerce history. Not to be outdone, class secretary Debbie Passon organized a senior bake sale, which also contributed a good amount of money to our class trea- sury. Indeed the girl senior class officers were ready. During the fall, our sports teams had rough times. Our soccer team was winless. Our football team under the direction of a new coach, made con- siderable strides toward becoming a league contender. The Yuletide season came, the senior class prepared for an evening of fun at a christmas dance for the whole school under the direction of Kevin Ross. The dance was held December 15, at the Highpoint Motor Inn. Between 75-100 Couples enjoyed a wonderful night sharing some music and good times with each other. 1973 brought us our senior privileges. We set out to and succeeded in securing the privilege by acting in a responsible manner. Future classes can be assured by our example that the Open Campus program will be continued. The High School of Commerce Student Council in the year 1972-1973 became an extremely active student organization. Under the guidance and direction of Student Council President Elton Williams; the Council secured the right of Senior cheerleaders to wear Senior hats in rallies, instituted the system of having other Class Officers and Student Council members reading the honor roll and morning announcements and merged the duties of Secretary and Treasurer into a new class office, Secretary-Treasurer. During the busy year, Celeste Hale was awarded the outstanding Service Plaque. In January, the Student Council started a Communication Drive. The purpose of this drive was to acquaint students with the Council and to pro- mote the student's confidence in the Council. A huge success, the drive consisted of Council members speaking to various homerooms, an assembly speech, public address announcement, a leaflet to each student of the scroll and posters hung in the corridors. During the winter months our sports teams found success. Our basketball team continued to dominate Western Mass. competition. Our hockey team also continued to be a top contender in its league. Yet, our biggest events of the Senior Year are in the future for us. Class Day is May 11 and we shall look back on our three Fleeting years at Com- merce with pride which we'll share with our parents. The Senior Banquet will be the following day, May 12, and Seniors with jobs will leave Com- merce High May 15. June 2 will be the date of our Senior Prom. This year we'll have two queens; unprecedented as far as we know, due to a tie in voting. Queens Barbara Blount and Carol Cusson shall reign over the Senior Class; their courts, and our prom. The last day for all seniors will be June 8 and we'll graduate June 12, at the Civic Center. Upon conclusion of our Class History, we would like to thank those worthy of thanks. Thanks to our class advisors for three years, Mr. Joseph Daly, Mr. Louis Czelusniak, Mrs. Anna Hatchett, and Mrs. Cecilia Cabana. Thanks to our administrators, Mr. Philip Sweeney, Dr. Gladys Midura and Mr. John Troy. Thanks to the faculty. We all thank our parents and family for their help, and we want to thank our underclassmen and friends. All these ingredients blended to make our three years at Commerce a pleasurable experience for us. 93 HOMEROOM 4 ROW 1: Joseph Calebrais, Ronnie Charles, Richard Cato, Michael Alexander, Rex Barnett, Barry Bradley.
