MARIA LACOPO Rae. | 575 Dickinson St. Clerical Class History The theme for the graduating class of 1971 is ““The Long and Winding Road,” and for most of us, these three years have been just that. We started our journey in Sept. of ’68, when, on the first day, we were greeted with a big WELCOME sign hung above those huge doors we were about to open to our new horizon. We found a long year of books and teachers confronting us and, of course, we found ourselves skipping a few classes; but before we knew it we were Juniors on our way to getting our class rings, cutting a few more classes and maybe bringing home a few more books. But now, as Seniors, we are about to close these doors behind us and open a new one — one which will be the biggest and hard- est door to open in our lives. And beyond it we will find a new, long and winding road. So now, we think, is a good time to look back on the three years that brought us here to Class Day, May 14, 1971. FRESHMAN YEAR September 4, 1968, was a very exciting day for 700 freshmen, who on that day, started down the long, winding road toward three years of fun, challenge, discovery, and learning. High school was a new experience for all of us, and we spent our first few months meeting and learning about each other. We were introduced to guidance assemblies, G. O., the Trad- ing Post, COMMERCE, the school paper, and our first rally — what a surprize! We joined all kinds of clubs, and our more talented classmates participated in our very own show, Freshman Capers. In December we attended our first election rally. We were to choose our class officers for Freshman year. Elected were; Karen Brownley, Presi- dent, Anthony Fugate, Vice-President, and Melissa Richards, Secretary. Student Council members were Marcia Brown, Deborah Carter, Connie Martin, Judy Paolini, Rosaline Picard, and Norman Walker. School closed for Christmas vacation; and when we returned in Janu- ary, we really felt like part of the High School of Commerce. As the seasons passed, the Raiders continued to make the news. On March 22, 1969, Commerce went to the state finals at Boston Gardens. However, they lost the state championship to Catholic Memorial with the tight score of 52-51. The freshman class discussed plans for the future. A representative and an alternate were chosen from each homeroom to form the Freshmen Executive Board. On March 31, a special assembly was held in commemoration of Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower and a member of our freshmen class, Shirley A. McLaurin, who also passed away. The communication f rom the office between the student body and the faculty became more modern and efficient when an intercom system was installed. It also eliminated the assemblies which had shortened our class time. Soon the temperature began to rise and we looked forward to our ju- nior year. We chose the ieee for our Junior class. Karen Brownley was re-elected President, Judy Paolini, Vice President, and Marcia Brown, Secretary. The Student Council members were also chosen for our class. They were Lesley Cope, Effie Marangoudakis, Connie Martin, Linda Solo- mon, Linda Strzempek, and Kathi Wright. The close of the school year Eipnen with it the end of another sports season at Commerce. Let’s review the highlights of our freshman year: Football: For the Raiders and rookie coach Ralph DeBonis, it was a tough year. Commerce finished the season with an unimpressive record of 1 win and 7 losses. Basketball: “A season filled with glory” is the only way to describe this year in basketball. The Raiders went undefeated until the final game of the year in the Boston State Tournament. 1969 marked the Ist undefeated season in 60 years for Commerce and the first in 17 years for a Spfld. team, thanks to rookie coach, Henry Payne. Wrestling: For Mr. Meacham and the wrestling team, victory was never quite attained, but every match was hard fought. Hockey: The team had a good year with 5 victories, 8 defeats, and 1 tie. Baseball: Even with a flock of freshman players, the team did not live up to its capabilities. June marked the end of our Freshman year, with only summer vacation between us and our next two years at Commerce. JUNIOR YEAR With our Junior Year came many changes, most of them pleasant. But on Sept. 23 tragedy struck with the death of Miss Joan E. McDonald, a bookkeeping teacher at Commerce since 1959. A memorial fund was es- tablished in her honor, for she was sadly missed by all at Commerce who knew and loved her. Surely the happiest event of the first part of our junior year came in October with the distribution of class rings. That shiny red stone did a lot for our egos; and for the first time in over 10 years, the October honor roll showed no sign of a “junior slump.” In fact, throughout the year we managed to hold second place to the seniors at honor roll assemblies. 70 Another first was the introduction of a new course, Afro-American His- tory, taught by two new teachers, Mr. Boyd and Mrs. Hurst. The course proved to be a success, for it is still being taught. In fall sports the soccer team, boasted a majority of juniors, showed its enthusiasm when it defeated Tech 1-0 for the first time in 21 years. The ended the season with a 3-8-3 record. Outstanding juniors included Bo D’Amario and Bobby Nyman. The class did their part in varsity football also and the team pulled a record of 2 wins and 6 losses. Studies were interrupted briefly in early November when rioting in other schools spread to Commerce. But order was restored with no great damage except perhaps to the great basketball spirit of Commerce, when spectators were barred from the games. Following a trend which eventually spread throughout the country, Commerce abolished its dress code. Styles changed and the result was a more relaxed atmosphere for everyone. During December the school held a candy sale in which prizes were awarded for those who sold the most. The profits went toward a new public address system for the auditorium. The whole school welcomed the Christmas vacation and those of us who recovered were back in Jan. eager to start the new year right. The juniors put their best foot forward on the ice when hockey stars such as Nyman, Sirois, Kinney, Marino, Rokosz, Carestia, and LaFlamme helped to push Commerce into second place in the Fay Division. The Basketball team showed spirit and Rick Yvon, Eric Morelaal and John Moynihan represented the class of ’71 on the court. Eight wins in a row helped to ease the disappointment of a downhill first half season. Junior girls showed their interest in sports through participation in the drill team and cheerleading squad. We got our first rating cards early in the new year; and with the com- ing of mid-winter vacation, we began plans on our biggest “first” — the Junior Prom. Another new addition to Commerce’s activities was the in- troduction of a Student Court, consisting of 2 juniors, along with 2 seniors and 2 freshmen. “Capers” 1970, was step into the “Age of Aquarius’ as the students displayed their talents in the first grade combined show in two years. Spring brought all the excitement of our Junior Prom, held on May 9th at the Oaks Banquet House from 8 to 11. The theme, “A Time for Us,” set a traditional mood for our Queen, Theresa Newman, and her court, Beth Bonk, Cecile Boyer, Lesley Cope, Lee Enos, Kathy Rokosz, and Catherine Yates. Elections for Senior officers took place in May. Our Senior class officers would be Judy Paolini, President, Edward Rokosz, Vice President, and Connie Martin, Secretary. From our newly elected Student Council we chose Linda Strzempek, President of the Student Council, Susan Drew, Vice-President and Debbie Parker, Secretary. Beth Bonk, Valerie Langley, and Althea O’Quinn were to be Student Council members. School was dismissed in June and so ended our second year at the High School of Commerce. SENIOR YEAR As we turn onto the last path of our long and winding road we can remember rushing frantically to our homeroom to receive our first symbol of recognition as seniors — our senior hats! Although the first few weeks of our senior year took a little getting used to, the feeling of joy prevailed until we were struck with the tragedy of Mr. Rumpal’s death. With the first honor roll assembly we were all pleased and a bit shocked to learn that more seniors made the honor roll than Mr. Sweeney can remember in his thirteen years at Commerce. Hurray for the Class of ’71! In November Commerce took a look at Women’s Lib and chose the first girl athlete of the month. Our football team started our school spirit rolling. It continued into the winter months with our basketball team and our hockey team as number one in the Fay Division. A lot of hard work and practice for all our athletes and we appreciate their spirit. Our senior class tried to pull together a Christmas dance at the Stone- haven Inn but, because of lack of su port, it was held at the Liberty Methodist Church — Still, a fun time for all who attended. Mr. Sweeney announced at the third honor roll assembly that in addi- tion to early dismissal May 17, seniors will be allowed to leave the build- ing during study periods starting March 1 for a one-month’s trial. Class ballots went out February 8, but the Senior Prom Queen and her Court won’t be chosen until April. The Prom will be held on June 5 at the Municipal Auditorium, with the Class Banquet scheduled for May 15. We would like to thank Mr. Sweeney, Dr. Midura, Mr. Troy, and the faculty for the guidance and knowledge they have given us during the three years we have wandered down the long road at the High School of Commerce. Our greatest appreciation goes to the late Bruno Rumpal who devoted 24 years of his life to the students of Commerce. Class Will Having reached the end of our days here at the High School of Commerce, we find it most fitting and proper to leave to our pos- terity our most prized possessions for the benefit of mankind. It did turn out to be a successful year with more on the Hunor Roll than last year. The big day in October finally came when Mr. Cullen arrived from Josten’s to de- liver the rings. It was after this day that one could distinguish the juniors from the fresh- men by looking at their hands. The Raid- ers described by one newspaper as “gut- ty’, lacked the experience and depth of their scheduled opponents, who capital- ized on Raider mistakes to score long touchdowns and forced the Raiders to play catch-up football. 142 143 Raiders Stun Tech 4-3 Tech High’s 5 year interschool winning streak of 39 games came to a halt by a fired up Raider team, and tremendous efforts by pitcher Roy Eggleston and outfielder Bob Rowe. Eggleston went 10 innings allowing just 3 hits. Under first year Coach Taylor, the Raiders compiled an 8-6 record. The Raiders, showing vast improvement, lost only one inter- school game the second half of the season, which was a 2-1 heartbreaker to Cathedral.
