Miss Joan E. McDonald, a business teacher at Commerce from 1961 to 1969, died Sept. 23, 1969. While at Commerce, she taught typewrit- ing and bookkeeping. Miss McDonald graduated from Classical High School and went on to re- ceive her Bachelor of Science Degree from A.I.C., and a Master of Science Degree from New York University. Mr. Peck “gets the ball rolling” first period with Concert Choir by singing warm-ups. Mr. Robert Peck Under the direction of Mr. Peck, a Concert Choir was formed this year. The Concert Choir is composed of 21 students selected after 200 auditions. This is the first year that Commerce has given academic credit to music students. The Concert Choir gave command performances in school assemblies, for the Conn. Valley School Supt. Association luncheon at Valle Steak House held in December, and on the Frank McInerney Show on WHYN. Hard at work the day before the final concert. And Student Council Best Represent The Words On Commerce’s Emblem — Industry And Integrity NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society was established in honor of those students who have shown exceptional ability in scholastic achievements. New members are initiated into the organization in the month of October. Under the direction of Mrs. Griffin, This organization works to provide scholarship funds for those students who are worthy of them. Money for the scholarships is obtained through various sales. The book stall is one of the main sources of revenue for this society. STUDENT COUNCIL Members of the Student Council are chosen representa- tives of the student body. This organization promotes the best interests of the school and provides Commerce students with active participation and formulation in school policies. The Student Court, which was recently activated, was the direct result of council encouragement. Student Patrol Keeps Tight Security Members of the patrol are responsible for the security of of the building. During the year members visit various hospitals to gain better understanding of the medical profession. Under the direction of Mrs. Bennett, the girls hold numer- ous bake sales during the year in order to obtain money for scholarship funds. , Interested Students With Vocational And Cultural The Future Teacher’s Club, advised by Mrs. Cabana and Mrs. Abbott, offers many Enrichment chances for students to become acquainted with the teaching profession. On Orientation Day, which is held in October, various speakers come from local colleges to inform the students what is offered in each college. The Future Teach- er’s Club raises money for scholarships through various sales during the year. This club has been recognized by the State Teachers’ Association.
