Oo Se 6 = Ss Se ae Z In admiration and appreciation of his ten years valuable service to the High School of Commerce, we dedicate this edition of ‘Caduceus’ to our principal, Mr. Philip A. Sweeney. After graduating from high school in. 1934, Mr. Sweeney, in order to finance his college education, began working for F.W. Woolworths as a busboy. He washed dishes and mopped floors 57 hours a week for the huge salary of $14. Increasing his wages to $18, he acquired the position as an assembly line inspector at the American Bosch. Beginning his college education, Mr. Sweeney attended American International College and graduated cum laude in English in 1941. Continuing his education, he then attended Harvard University from 1942 until 1949. During this term he received his Masters Degree in English. Later, from 1948 until 1949, Mr. Sweeney took a graduate course in administra- tion at Springfield College. Mr. Sweeney began what resulted as twenty-five years in secondary school work in 1942 when he became the English Department chairman of Monson Academy. He spent more than eighteen of these twenty-five years in administration of junior and senior high schools, all within the greater Spring- field area. Beginning in 1947, he became an English teacher at Forrest Park High School. In 1950 he became principal of Classical Junior High School and vice-president of Classical High School. Then in 1953, Mr. Sweeney became principal of Forest Park Junior High School where he stayed until being appointed principal of our school in 1958. Mr. Sweeney has been a very active member in the Spring- field educational system. He is a member of the New England School Development Council, and National and Massachusetts JUN 2 11 1968 Secondary School Principals Associations. Also, he 1s a trustee of AIC and received the Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1966. In 1964, Mr. Sweeney had the honor of representing our country at Berlin, Germany during the International Confer- ence on Modern Languages. This year, he was also chosen to represent our country at New Delhi, India during a compara- tive study of school administration. This journey was com- pleted by making a complete trip around the world. Speaking on his ten years at Commerce, Mr, Sweeney notes that many changes have taken place. The rarsing of hemlines and lowering of hair lines are those most notable in students. All sports, particularly tennis, reading, and conversation were listed as his hobbies. Long hair, white lipstick, and heavy make-up are his particular pet peeves. Mr. Sweeney singles out Commerce as being the best high school in Springfield because he feels it is the only school which offers a sufficient college preparatory and business course combined. As a gift of a portion of the knowledge he has obtained from working with students during these past years, Mr. Sweeney wishes to extend this message to the entire student body: “The world of ideas 1s the only one that transcends time and space. Today represents a culmination of man’s efforts to improve his lot and he has in things material. But with edu- cation, with love of your fellow man, and with love for the ideas of justice, equality, and freedom, your generation can and must lead the way into a realm of higher life for us all. I wish you Godspeed!”
