For informative literature ... ahcawarine SeorsieR Foreword Although the 1961-62 school year is over, each class will have something significant in its own right to cherish and remember as it looks through the pages of our yearbook. As the freshmen become juniors, the memory of Freshie Day will linger on: an exciting experience to some, a day of woe fo others. They will also remember—with smiles on their faces—the bewildering predicament they found themselves in the first day of school as they tried to find the rooms as- signed to them. The juniors, now promoted to seniors, will always hold dear the day they wore their class rings for the first time and the thrilling night of their junior prom. Of course, the nightly homework assignments which seemed never to end will be remembered with a wrinkle on their brow. The now-graduated seniors will have memories abun- dant as they reminisce through their yearbook. Their senior prom, which was even more splendid than they had anti- cipated, will by far stand out as the highlight of their last year at Commerce. The senior banquet, the senior hats, and Class Day will as well be included as they think back to all their joys at high school. Yes, there are memories for everyone pictured in the 1962 yearbook. As you turn its pages, let each page be a KEY unlocking a fond recollection. Each of us has, at some time or other, experienced occasions when our teachers have been more than just teachers. Their main duty is that of trying to educate those of us who desire training or knowledge in a certain field. But how many of us have taken personal problems to our superiors with the hope that we would gain understanding, and in addition, have found a solution? Although we do not always show gratitude towards them, it is always there. We appreciate having such a fine faculty. Philip A. Sweeney Principal Superintendent, Dr. T. In these forty-two minute periods we have endeavored to absorb all that is possible of a subject. There are some exceptions to the rule, however, as when interruptions such as assemblies and fire drillshave shortened the time period. Aft these times we are often surprised to find a look of genuine relief upon the faces of our teachers as well as upon our own. Regardless of whether periods are long or short, however, we have learned to ap- preciate every valuable minute that is spent in class. Thomas Burke’s rock collection proves an interesting topic for an oral com- position in his freshman English class, where oral as well as written expression is emphasized. Right: Terry Lyons shows the correct way to dissect a frog in the Biology Lab as Judy Gero, Diane Settembro, Mary Chambers, and Dolores Piwo- warczyk look on. 22 23 Diane Mosher shares her favorite recipe with Glory Pacia, Jean McCracken, and Carol Salvetti during a cooking session. The General Course includes pupils not yet specializing in a particular field. They are prepared for employment as typical office assistants. By their senior year many will become adept in more advanced skills. Left: Mary Miller waits patiently while Gail Poirier marks the hemline on the skirt Mary is creating in her sewing class. Like Foods, Dressmaking is a popular respite from the routine of academic subjects. “When shall we three meet again?’ say the three witches of Macbeth: Carol Kinsman, Sharon Duff, and Joanne LeBlanc. Left: Putting their mathematical talents to use are Lorraine Sen- ecal and Ronald Blodgett in Mr. Bennett’s geometry class. 24 The College Preparatory course contains a wide variety of subjects for the college-bound stu- dent. The C. P. student may also take a combination course with stenography or bookkeeping, en- abling him to succeed in both college and outside employment. 25 SPAIN ¢ SA. Above: Senorita Diane Leone shakes her maraccas while Senior Bob Rosso serenades her. A foreign language is one of the requirements for college students. Left: Conspiring against Mr. Wilder in Chemistry | class are Marilyn Bourgeois, Nancy Tilley, and Carolyn Ugolini, who are creating a secret formula. Stenography, a two-year course, not only teaches students the techniques of shorthand, but also helps them to develop skill in typing and office procedures. Industriously transcribing their shorthand notes are Dawna McKay, Marilyn Simpson, Linda Monson, Patricia Gebo in their Stenography II class. Senior Suzanne Parent is learning one of the first steps in the filing proce- dure. Seniors take Filing as part of a three-division course in Office Practice Studying a copy of the Declara- tion of Independence, which was part of the Freedom Train display, are stenography stu- dents Ida Vandal, Elsa Cressotti, Robert Morana, Kathy St. Marie, Is CONGRESS. Debating upon a maior economic issue are Francis Vivenzio, Marna Berthiaume, Richard Fox, Diane Colby, ad Robert Page, who are students in Mr. McKay’s Economics class. 28 Bookkeeping opens a complete world of top-rate positions in the business field. His three years of train- ing gives a student the background he needs either to go to work or to continue with his education at a business college. Left: Maureen Felton remains cool as a cucumber during an exacting typing timing. The correct form in which a check should be made out is pointed out by Susan Jorda while Linda Lopardo, Barbara Fortune, Martha Peach, and Janet Bergeron look on in Mr. Alleva’s Bookkeeping | class. Band is among the electives available to clerical stu- dents. A glance into the band room reveals Frank Calabrese, Eli Green, Francis O’Leary, and Peter Wosiak during a practice session. It’s not all work and no play in this curriculum—many students elect Person- ality and Etiquette. Enjoying themselves at the class New Year’s party, designed to give them social experience, are Robert Philp, Beatrice Stovall, James Donnelly, Judy Johnson, Barbara Schroeder, Richard Haglund, Patricia Martel, and Martha Mon- roe. In Clerical Bookkeeping class among the processes is examining posted papers for both the right and wrong ways to do the work. Diane Colby, Judy Fan- toni, Lois Goodrich, Bill Quinn, and Nancy Scibelli are at Mr. McWha’s bulletin board. Another of the ‘fun’ classes offered to clerical stu- dents is Choir. Distributive Education serves occupations in which 30 per cent of the population is employed. On-the-job-training highlights job rotation, a unique f eature of this course. During training the student learns many phases of merchandising. Doris Kurtyka is shown performing several duties a D.E. student must learn. Doris works in the electronic com- puting department, assisting in the preparation of daily sales summaries. She helps in arranging stock when new merchandise arrives as well as in preparing displays to show new goods to the public. 32 Doris helps in the inventory. She gains experience in selling on the job. In another phase of her training, Doris runs a key-punch pre- paring cards for the computer. A major design of Distributive Education is to lead students to career objectives that will de- velop a more efficient distribution of goods and services for us, the consumers. She develops poise by the broadening experience of personal contact with the customers. 33 The senior year is filled with anxiety and anticipation. Almost from the first day of school of this last year, things begin to happen: Senior hats are passed out and worn proudly; yearbook-photo appointments are received from the studio; ballots are distributed out for prettiest girl, class wit, and many other superlatives. Of course, such familiar things as cheering at rallies and games and listening to suggestions at guidance meetings are still a part of the everyday life. Many of these will be sadly missed by our seniors, but such memories will be brought back a hundred- fold as they glance through their yearbooks in years to come. Yes, the senior year and all of its events are excit- ing; it is the year most remembered by high school students. Sweeney, principal. Enchanting is the word that best describes the 1961 Junior Prom, the first in 34 years. Although it was awaited with eagerness, no one imagined how wonderful it really would be. These students are really enjoying themselves Relaxing at the dinghy, one of the feature attractions of the evening, are Jane Messier and Nancy Martel, and their escorts. “Harbor Lights’’ was an overwhelming success, as students danced under the nautical spell cast by the reflected blue, green, and yellow lights revolving from the lighthouse. A pretty sight is the queen and her court: Lynn Lohmyer, Den- ise Brunet, Queen Aroxy Meregian, Gerry Grigg, and Pat Gebo. a : : 91 Awed by the dancing agility of Donna Seymour and her escort, faculty and seniors gathered around to get a few tips on how to do the Twist. Receiving presents from Santa Claus, better known as Larry Dunn, for their fine work in making the Christmas dance a success, are Art Savage, chairman; Mr. William Wilder and Mrs. Helene Griffin, advisers; and Mary Joslyn and Judith Pana- gotupulos, co-chairmen. Snowflake Cotillion A grand march to Santa’s sleigh to receive colorful balloons was led by Senior Class President Richard Pietrucci. “Here comes Santa Claus. Here comes Santa Claus’’ played the band as Larry Dunn, portraying Jolly Old Saint Nick, was escorted to the festivities by Mary Joslyn, Denise Brunet, and Beverly Gamelli. Judy Panagotopulos and her escort seemed to be en- joying the decorations as they took advantage of a piece of obscure mistletoe hung above the entrance to the dance. 93 The beginning . . . In September, 1959, a group of forelorn and wor- ried boys and girls entered their c hosen school, The High School of Commerce. A whole new world of work and enjoyment presented itself to pupils from various junior high schools throughout Springfield. Our group of 474 youths found an air of friendship from the upperclassmen and faculty, who were eager to help us find our way. The first fear of entering upon high school life was finally conquered. The following weeks revealed many new. discov- eries and experiences. The most startling news we encountered was a notice, in the form of a threat reading: “Freshie Day—Dress Appropriately.” Hun- dreds of us entered our favorite school wearing hilarious costumes. After our diligently avoiding sen- iors stationed throughout the halls, the “Big Clanger” rang announcing our “Death Warrant” in an assembly organized by the blood-thirsty upperclassmen. The first victims of these vultures were Paul Kapansky and Kevin Cavanaugh, who were forced to revolutionize the art of cheerleading. Acrobatic stunts were the next exhibition of power displayed by the seniors, who compelled many of us to give our fellow fresh- men a piggy-back ride on stage. One pleasing effect of this feat, atl east for Ernest LaFaille, was the sudden knowledge of Austin Kimball’s hidden talents for serving as transportation. The seniors then showed supreme delight from a well-plotted Wedding March, the main attraction of their ego-building assembly. Diane Richards and John Pestana proved to be pic- turesque wearing large shirts and ties, one shoe and one sneaker, and one nylon and one sock. Since then we were officially included as mem- bers of the Commerce society, we embarked upon campaigning for our Freshmen elections. Slogans such as Olive Washburn’s, “All of my opponents are okay, but for the best vote O. J.” infiltrated the halls thanks to the efforts of untiring campaign managers such as Barbara Warren and Isabelle Wenk. After they presented their platforms to us in an assembly, we chose Richard Pietrucci as president (which got to be a habit in the next two years); Diane Richards, vice- president; and Alyce Boussy, secretary. 94 Hysterical Although we enjoyed being actively engaged in sports and many other school functions, we respond- ed to the first Capers Call with even more enthusi- asm. The theme, Various Styles of American Music, led Gloria Girouard to present her version of ““Accor- diana” and Ellen Stebbins to sing, the well-known “Buttons and Bows.” Previously, our class didn’t realize that we had a Perry Como among our more talented classmen. Yes, Bobby Ryan really has some hidden vocal chords. These talented freshmen added to the great success of ‘Capers 1959.” Because of the tremendous talents of our class, we also showed great representation in the Music Fes- tival, another main attraction of our Freshman year. Our orchestra played such popular tunes as “At Even- tide It Shall Be Light,” by Gaul; “Raisins and Al- monds,” a Jewish folk song; and “Ballet Music,” from Rosamunde by Schubert. Of course, there had to be a few musicians who insisted on playing old-fashioned music. Yes, Pat Riley, Lucy Childs, and Hamilton Wray favored such classical melodies as “Rock Around the Clock,” and the “Twist.” There was also quite a con- trast between “Ave Maria” sung by Sandy Maynard and Cheryl Crowe of the Choralettes and “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” sung by Barbara Allen, Joan Khoury, and Edwina Hervieux of the Glee Club. Unaware of any more important occurrences before the end of the Freshman year, we were suddenly con- fronted with the task of electing officers for our Jun- ior year. A few members of our class showed protest against what they considered a Communist election, since only one person was running for each office. Nevertheless, compelled to vote, we cast our ballots in a democratic way, voting for the only people run- ning, who were Richard Pietrucci, president; Karen Geagan, secretary, and Sandy Smart, vice-president. Upon returning to Commerce in September to be- gin our Junior year, many of us, being more familiar with the school and our fellow students, participated in such activities as Junior Achievement, Pro Merito, Hi-Y, Kumtux, and many after-school sports, eagerly awaiting our second Capers Call. A host of new talent was discovered among the members of our junior class. Among these, the Lollipop Kids, better known as Sandy Maynard, Carolyn Monnette, Barbara Allen, and Evelyn Mielnikowski sang the popular song of the same name. Everyone had their hats or pocket- books ready to catch “Pennies From Heaven” as Nancy Alexander sang that song so realistically. In a skit concerning spring, a scarecrow portrayed by Ellen History Stebbins was the victim of that old crow Barbara Warren, who so eagerly played her part that she nearly took off in flight. Sorry, Wrong Number, a play put on by the Drama Club, should have won an Academy Award for ter- rorizing the faculty. Margaret Lawton, the victim of an unscrupulous murder plot, appropriately concluded the play with a shrieking scream about five octaves higher than her normal voice. This sent Marcia Kim- ball, Henry Jutras, and Susan Taft, members of the cast, and most of the audience fleeing from the build- ing. Determined to boost our team to victory with spirit, a large crowd turned out for the first basketball game of the season. When our boys assembled on the court for practice, their skill was compared by everyone to that of the famous Boston Celtics. Soon after the game began, Russell Orr, Bobby Ryan and Hamilton Wray rushed across the court to make a swooping basket—for the other team, a play well-known in the Globe Trotter ranks. Well!—it was something like that. Despite little mistakes like that, our team led us to the City Championship and a berth in the Western Mass. tournament. The announcement of plans for the first Junior Prom in 34 years was the most earth-shattering news we were to hear in our first two years at Commerce. “Harbor Lights” was held on April 29, 1961, with Ronnie Drumm and his orchestra. The beautiful dec- orations proved to be a hazard when streamers, form- ing a curtain-like entrance at the bottom of the stairs, obstructed the view of two former strangers who crashed together unexpectedly. Seeing stars in a romantic atmosphere, Lynn Lohmeyer and Doug Dayton became the BEST of friends. Rather accustomed to having elections in an un- democratic fashion, we elected Richard Pietrucci, pres- ident; Art Savage, vice president; and Barbara Goff, secretary. Looking back on the great job they did as our senior officers, we might come to the conclu- sion that undemocratic elections are the best. Engrossed with expectations of better things during our senior year, our junior year came to a close with- out warning. On September 9, 1961, our class began its final year in high school. On the first day, the sparkling new white senior hats were seen all through the halls. Nearly everyone looked impressive; two exceptions, however, were Larry Dunn, whose hat covered as much area as a Hummingbird would, and Ellen Steb- bins, whose hat looked like a Chinese coolie’s hiding most of her face. Obviously, somebody goofed! 95 After establishing our prestige over underclassmen, we officially initiated the freshmen in a new kind of Freshie Day held in the assembly hall. Since there were a larger number of boys in the Freshmen Class this year, we decided to test their abilities against some of our stronger senior girls, such as Diane Rich- ards. Unjustifiably, we blindfolded only the boy and handed each a roll of newspaper as a weapon to use in the battle of the sexes. Although Diane had the ad- vantage of seeing her opponent, she fled from the reach of the all-powerful freshman swatter who had given her a few good blows during the main bout. We thrived on the embarrassment of these young freshmen, and as Mr. Sweeney said later, “The assem- bly turned out very nicely—for the seniors!!” A little bit of “class was added to the seniors when we chose “Snowflake Cotillion” as the name for our Christmas dance. Surprised by a visit from Santa Claus, better known as Larry Dunn, the dance immediately took on the spirit of Christmas. While generously handing out colorful balloons, something within Santa’s suit kept slipping down — down — down!!! What was left was Larry Dunn. “Rah, Rah for Commerce” was a familiar cheer heard from the grandstands during the most fantastic and successful basketball season of our three years at Commerce. We witnessed many ‘thrilling rallies, but the most unforgettable one began in an ordinary way with the drill team dramatically marching down the center aisle and assembling on the stage to lead us in our school song. Suddenly, our attention was averted to Mr. Grant, who conspicuously held a white sneaker high and asked, “Who claims this sneaker?” Immediately Andrea Bryant’s face turned a bright scarlet to match her uniform. When asked why she didn’t stop to replace her shoe, Andrea’s only com- ment was, “The show must go on.” Memories of incidents such as these and the more important events such as Class Day, the Banquet and our thrilling Senior Prom will always linger on in the heart of every senior of the triumphant class of 1962. To compensat e, however, for what may seem endless amounts of homework is the knowledge of no longer being the Commerce “babies.” Another element of satisfaction is the prestige of getting class rings and being visited by Business Consultants just as the seniors are. Cam- paign turmoil for the election of senior officers is the next important event of the junior year. More memorable than everything else, however, is the gala junior prom. From then on, all thoughts are turned towards that all-important senior year. The Junior Class officers are Judy Collings, Vice-President; Richard Blanchard, President; and Sandra Shonak, Secretary. During the first few weeks, each freshman remains closely attached to those he has known since junior high school. Freshie Day, however, conquers all barriers. As the “persecuted victims” of the seniors, the frosh are united fo a common cause—that of avoiding any and all seniors. At the end of the day, however, each freshie knows that he is now a welcomed member of the High School of Commerce. Of course, there are other exciting “firsts” during the fresh- man year such as the freshman elections, Commerce Capers, semester exams, and finally the election of junior officers. Freshmen... “Ill walk the line,” says Joyce Gentile, as she is fol- lowed by David Plant toward the stage for a mock wedding at the Freshie Day Assembly. Marching along together are Charles Connors, Chris- tine Sweeney, and Cheryl Nye during the torture of Freshie Day. That First Month of freshman year can be a harrowing experience: first day confusion, aptitude tests . . . and Freshie Day. Seniors Richard Pietrucci and Marilyn Bourgeois are amused by the balloon contest between Betty Gaff- ney and Robert Armitage at their Freshie Day Assem- bly. “Dance with me,” says Richard Rosso to his nervous partner, Pamela Kelly, at the Freshie Day Assembly. “Problems, problems, problems all day long,” says Carolina Fazio during the Freshman Aptitude Tests. Everyone turned out to cheer on our basketball team to victory after victory. In return, our team gave us a thrilling game each time, sensing that each Commerce student was behind them. The fact that our team scored 100 points in one basketball game is evi- dence of that. The result: A city championship. Our boys won their first baseball and football victories over Classical in three years, while our soccer team emerged with three boys receiving All-City honorable mention. The year may also be remembered as a year in which a large number of girls took part in after-school sports activities such as volley- ball, field hockey, bowling, basketball, and softball. 82 We are grateful to many people beyond the Editorial Staff for giving their time and talents. Without their assistance, Caduceus 1962 would have been a more difficult task and a poorer publication. To Mrs. Cabana — who supervised our typing Acknowledgements sessions during her unassigned time. To all the homeroom and classroom teachers — who “overlooked” our demanding interrup- tions. To Miss McCleary, Mr. Jones, Pat Gebo, Caro- lyn Ugolini, Marion Nickelson, and Donna Sander- son — who catered to our every beck and call for group and action photos. To Miss Henderson and her senior assistant, Hamilton Wray — who arranged appointments and carefully followed the senior portraits through their production. To Steve Raichelson, our student photographer, and Jill Surprenant, his “secretary,” — who sup- plied our junior candids. To Diane Colby — whose artistic talents brighten the Senior Ballot. To Sam Meregian and Larry Dunn — who aided us on the sports section. To Mr. Ed Carlson of the Loring Studios — who rescued us in several emergency photo situations. And, above all, to Mr. Jack Brown, our print- er’s representative — for invaluable technical advice throughout the entire book. 176 - Smith, | Stavrowlakis, Michael Sheffer, Theresa 37, 38, 82, 90,
