Volume 33, 1958 High School of Commerce 415 State Street Springfield 5, Massachusetts STACK Dedication “The man we’re honoring here today has been ‘Mr. Commerce’ — all the way.” Robert Jackson. The senior class wishes to dedicate Caduceus 1958 to Mr. G. Donald Melville, now retired, who devoted 34 years of his life to serving the High me 4 School of Commerce in almost every phase of its at 3 operation. is Foreword We, the staff of Caduceus, present in this our 1958 memory book some of the cherished things which we shall carry away from our seemingly brief high school career. Most of our memories are intangible — the timid fears of a bewildered freshman, the daily morning stroll through the corridors, the familiar request for a pass, the rebuke or praise of an unexpectedly requested classroom recita- tion, the eager press of the lunchroom crowd, the dis- covery that a secret admiration is mutual, the inward flutter before opening a report card envelope, the merited pride of a lofty senior, the fleeting days before gradua- tion. Other memories are events — the big game we won, the dance we attended, the stage show we enjoyed put- ting on, the formal prom, and finally the receipt of our treasured diploma. These and other memories are often embodied in the words we have heard and thrilled to throughout the years. Among them are the proud school motto, the jubilant refrains of our school song, the spirited school cheers, the pronouncements at Commencement. It is these Commerce traditions in words that we fondly commemorate in our 1958 Caduceus. Gamel, principal, assumed his posi- tion at the High School of Commerce in Septem- ber, 1953. During these last five years, he has been instrumental in bringing about many im- provements in our school. In addition to adminis- trative work, Dr. Gamel has always been able to find time to accommodate the students who seek his advice and approval on various matters. Born in Moody, Texas, Dr. Gamel received his B.A. from West Texas State College. He then attended Columbia University, where he earned his M. Ed. and Ph. D. Ed. degrees. Before he came to Commerce, he was assistant principal of Van Sickle Junior High School and principal of Chest- nut Street Junior High School. Mr. Raymond J. Montagna, assistant principal, also entered our school in September of 1953. Since that time, he has faithfully fulfilled his many duties, which include the direction of Com- merce Capers, social functions, and faculty and student schedules. His main tasks are administra- tive, in the disciplinary field. Mr. Montagna was born in Agawam, Massa- chusetts. He received his B.S. from American In- ternational College, his M. Ed. from Springfield College, and has continued his graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts. Before taking his present position here at Commerce, Mr. Mon- tagna taught mathematics at Agawam High School and Chestnut Street Junior High School. Upon looking up the addresses of various members of our class, we find that their activities and professions have taken them to cities throughout the United States and many European countries. Because of the distance between these various places and Springfield, our graduates find it difficult to ar- rive at the same time. At this point we would like to thank Mrs. David Durocher, the former Carol La Fran- cis, and her husband for lending us one of their planes from their company, Flight Enterprise, in New Jersey, so that we may pick up our former classmates for this reunion. At the airport we find the crew members of the Red Raider plane about ready for departure. Our official hostess and chief stewardess, Ann Mitchell, greets us at the door and sees to it that we are quite comfortable for our long journey. After a quick brief- ing on our flight and what to do in case of emerg- ency, Our stewardess introduces us to the rest of the crew. We are quite surprised to find former classmates Bill Flanders as pilot, Pete Coles as co-pilot, Larry Beerwort as crew chief, and Gloria Shirly and Judy Ingalls as our two charming assistant stewardesses. They now announce our first stop to be Dallas, Texas, where we will find that wealthy oil millionaire, Neal Cas YW, ZY Ads David, who is traveling with his staff of Commerce graduates. His two favorite private secretaries are Helen Misterka and Frannie Monzillo, who are accom- panied by one of the world’s most famous draftsmen, the personal aide to Mr. David, Betty Denesha. While in Miami all of us leave for a quick tour of the fabulous city and end up at the famous Vagabond Club, now owned by Edward Stubbs. The ladies all remark on the lovely color scheme and decoration of the club. Upon inquiring we find that it was designed by the famous interior decorator, Naureen Duns- combe. This conversation comes to an end when the lights dim and the wonderful singing group the “HEARTBURNS” take the floor. Their manager, Mrs. Beusee, the former Carol Harrison, tells us that their hit record “PAIN” has sold over twenty-five million copies. After their performance we meet the mem- bers of the group, who are Gerry Beusee, Jimmy Wright, John Dorn, and Tommy Ryan. Following this is the terrific dance act starring Joyce Pappas and Joanne Szarlan. After collecting our group of alumnae, whom do we see but Beverly Rodiman and Virginia White, the debutantes, wearing minks, and taking their annual tour around the world. We then set off in our Red Raider plane for our next stop, Venice, Italy. Class Prophecy Here we find the Pizza Queen, Lorraine Testori, working in her pizza house. Along with her is Sheila Balicki, who is helping Lorraine out in between coach- ing her pee-wee Giants Team, with the help of her favorite Giants’ star, her husb and, Bob Simpson. After picking up our passengers from Italy, we con- tinue on to Paris, France. Here we are in magnificent Paris, where our first stop will be at the Mark Stern- bane’s Salon of Fashion, where Roberta Malcolm is top model. After leaving the dress shop, we walk down the Champs Elysee; and whom do we see, Deborah King, the famous veterinarian accompanied by her five pink French poodles. Who is that coming down the street? Well, it’s Paul Oldenburg, one of the best taxi drivers in Paris. As evening settles over Paris, we find ourselves once again in the air. Homeward at last... Look! there is Bradley Field! What a wonderful feel- ing to be at our last landing stop; and look at the reception committee, too! Why it’s Brian O’Brien, that man out of Esquire, the owner of the nationally known Brian O’Brien, O’Brien, O’Brien, Incorporated Novelty Shop, which specializes in fake pencils, insects and squirt guns. With Brian is Tom Fielding, the top TV producer of “Mousey Land,” who is about to be greeted by our stewardess. Let’s eavesdrop, Brian, O.K.? Listen to the old nick names: Mickey Mouse and Field Mouse, our old friends. Well! look at the free bus service we have pro- vided by Don Kozaczka. Now that we are comfortably seated on the buses, we head for our destination, the reunion at the Artuph Hotel. This hotel is owned and managed by the one and only Roman Artuph.. . Look at all the familiar faces here. There is Mrs. George Knight, the former Donna Barry, who has for the past three years taken the trophies at the In- dianapolis Speedway with her little soap box. Trying to win the trophy from Mrs. Knight for the past three years is Mrs. Irving Witkop, the former Bev Battige. With them we find that likable gas station attendant, sit Smith, and his little windshield washer, Jane erzi. Over in the far corner we find Barbara Winiarski chatting with the former Judy Harris, who just lately became Mrs. Thomas Pettengill. Who is sitting over there? If it isn’t Kitty Giancola with her camera! | heard Kitty is Mr. Jones’s little photographer helper at Commerce. Here is a group of old friends and the new additions to Harlem Globe Trotters, Paul Ward, Joe Davis, Ned McCants and Willie “Lump Lump” Jones. Look who’s coming, Faith Nascembeni and her little pupil, Johnny Veinot. For some strange reason we find Nick Agnos hid- ing behind the potted palms in the corner. Hmm Hmm, now we know the reason why. Here come Maureen Kelley and her Nick-thirsty blood hounds. Now we take our places as Jerry Beaulieu, our Senator from Massachusetts and guest speaker, con- cludes our evening. Class Will We, the Senior class of June in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty-eight, of the High School of Commerce, having neither the mentality nor emotions toward others, do hereby bequeath and bestow the herein mentioned articles as the only will and testament we dare write. To the five finest, Dr. Gamel, Mr. Montagna, Mr. Rumpal, Mrs. LaBonte, and Mr. Conchieri, we leave our deep appreciation for their endless work in our behalf. The G.O. Accounting class leaves one roller-skate for next year’s agents so they can collect money. The “Commerce” staff leaves a large economy size magnifying glass for tracking down news for future “Commerce” editions. Franny Fazio leaves a pair of track shoes to the athlete who shall take the copy of “Commerce” to the printer's office. The Capers’ script writers leave the hours of tiresome work and the responsibility of the show to anyone brave enough to take the job. Also en- closed is a slightly used script. 76 iS Nancy Kean leaves the ‘Caduceus beanie” to next year’s editor-in-chief. Franny Monzillo leaves her sun glasses to Eddie Bishop so he can watch all the girls without get- ting eyestrain. Gerald Beaulieu leaves a box of safety pins to next year’s Senior class president to hold his class together. Brian O’Brien leaves his sharp pencil and ste- nography notebook to any ambitious male. ste- nographer. Jean Markowski leaves her seat in Driver Edu- cation to anyone who dares take it. (She didn’t get her license.) Joyce Pappas leav es her dancing shoes to the toe-dancing specialist, Marty Dumschat. Dolly Filiault wills her secret of success for the teams to Vicki Serafini. (Her red-laced sneakers.) Anita Ford and Kay Fitzgerald leave their seats in the coffee shop to any underclassmen who want to find out who went where with who, when, and did what. To next year’s class couple we leave a set of handcuffs to keep them together. They are Mike Morris and Pat Mastalerz. CATCS , 4 Any remaining properties, after all bequests have been granted, shall be destroyed or ruined so as to prevent contagion and epidemic. In testimony whereof we, the departing Class of June, 1958, in the presence of witnesses, here- unto subscribe, submit, and seal our first, last, and only will and testament.
