IIIIH The Yearbook staff would like to acknowledge an outstanding student whose memory will be with us always. Pat died at Children’s Medical Hospital in Dallas on June 28, 1986. He had been battling Hodgkin’s Disease since the age of six. As a freshman and sophomore, Pat was a courageous athlete for the Commerce Tigers. Every coach at Commerce High School who came in con- tact with him commented on his willingness to suc- ceed and his desire to be his best. The most memorable performance last year was Pat running on the Mile Relay team at district and regional meets when he was ob- viously weak. At the district meet, Pat ran three 400 meter runs with his time being very respectable in all three. Track was not the only sport he excelled in. On last year’s bi-district championship team in basketball, Pat played very well in crucial game conditions and added much depth to the line-up. Pat was also active in several UIL literary events, a member of FCA, and a member of the junior high student council. Courtesy of “Commerce Journal” 4 s T A F F C.I.S.D. ADMINISTRATION Commerce High School, in my opinion, is the finest 3A high school in the state of Texas. The quality of its students, the quality of its staff, and the quality of its curricular and co-curricular programs form a powerful composite. Our aim is to assist students in being productive in the present while preparing for the future, and I believe, we are ac- complishing this goal. Pat Pope School Board Members Fred Russell President Ronnie Davidson Vice President Mary Hendrix Secretary Antheoy Harris Janies Humphries Irish King James Norwood w M C.H.S. ADMINISTRATION Chester Juroska Principal Alvis Alderman Assistant Principal Principal During the 1986-87 school year there were many changes. After two and a half years as principal, Mr. Juroska took the job as I superintendent for Gruver I.S.D. Mr. Alderman was appointed principal for the remainder of the year after serving as assistant r principal for twelve and a half years. Sherry Rector was hired as assistant principal for the second semester. There were also j changes when Mrs. Wilenbeck moved and when Mrs. Adams ' was on a leave of absence. Shanna Morris was hired as the new aide and Ginny Patton was secretary while Mrs. Adams was gone. 7 I Rose Lynn Adams Secretary Ginny Patton Secretary Betty Williamson Librarian Katherine Weilenbeck Aide c H S 8 A special thanks to Mrs. Follis for her six- teen years of service to Commerce In- dependent School District. She was always there to inform us of our needed immuniza- tion, to test our hearing and sight, but most memorably for checking us all for lice. She will be greatly missed by the faculty and students of Commerce schools. John Aune Math Are you sure we look o.k.? The 1986-87 Science Club proved to be a most worthwhile and productive endeavor. Although it was the youngest of the clubs at Commerce High School this year, it was by no means met with a lack of experienced leadership and dedicated membership. Some club members attend- ed the China Exhibit at Fair Park with Mrs. and Mr. Wisakowsky. Mr. Wisakowsky generously purchased the members of the club their lunchtime meal. Mrs. Wisakowsky, who used to do volunteer work at the Dallas Museum of Natural History, was able to provide the club with a behind the scenes tour. The purposes of the Office Education Association are to develop leadership skills through participation in civic, recreational, and social activities. In addition it promotes high standards in ethics, workmanship, and scholarship. It allows students to strengthen confidence in themselves and in their work. Members participated in several activities during the year including service, leadership, social, and safety. The chapter was recognized nationally for its service and safe- ty activities. Several students participated in state and na- tionally sponsored leadership workshops. In addition, more than eight awards were presented to individual chapter members for achievements in contests at district and state level. Three students achieved outstanding recognition for their leadership abilities by being selected as officers for OEA. Angela Plata was selected president of Area 1. Eddy Mize was selected State Sergeant at Arms. Jennifer Patton served as State Sergeant at Arms and was elected Na- tional Parliamentarian. Student Council. With projects involving both the school and the community, this group has dedicated their time to carrying out various activities. The C.H.S. Student Council began the year with the annual Howdy Dance to welcome new students and to get old students back into the school routine. This year the council decided on the theme “The Year of the Tiger, for Homecoming, which included hall decorations, the crowning of a Homecoming Queen and of course the dance where a giant screen showed videos, while students and alumni danced. One of the regular functions of the Student Council is to hold dances, such as a dance to collect can goods for Thanksgiving, the Christmas dance, and the Sweetheart dance at which Sheri Snyder and Mark Bryant were elected as Student Council Sweetheart and Beau. We also had a spring Soc-Hop and an Election Dance. The council also conducted a drug-alcohol abuse prevention week, numerous safety projects, and a year long secret pal teacher-appreciation program. For the community, the council ushered at the School’s Open House and also ushered at Freshman Orientation. For the second year, the council sponsored a Multi-media presentation called Paradise.” At Christmas, the Student Council sponsored an Adopt an Angel” project benefiting needy children in Commerce. In addition to work in the school and community, the council has been active in District XIX. As District Secretary, C.H.S. Student Council hosted the spring forum, a full-day workshop for over 300 students and sponsors from all over Northeast Texas. At state, the members were honored by being chosen to be one of three Profile Schools, which lead a discussion on the operation of their council. 66 Top row: Mark Bryant and Russ Gregg. This year the Spanish Club has undertaken many projects and has been rather active because of our increase in club members. Olympics of the Mind is a team of creative problem solvers. Creativity, not an exceptional I.Q. is stressed. The team receives a long-term problem which is presented at competition after two months of work. They also compete in style and spontaneous categories. Style is the little ex- tras” that are not required and Spontaneous requires the students to think on their feet. This year’s problem was Chain Reaction involving fifty mousetraps. 75 The band plays for the powder-puff football game. Ruth Reel and Kathy Edwards “THE YEAR OF THE TIGER” HOMECOMING 1987 Homecoming 1986 celebrated ‘The year of the Tiger” with traditional and new events. Each class decorated the halls and foyer with colorful streamers, pictures, tiger paws and balloons showing the school activities in each season of the year. Individually, students proclaimed their school spirit by buying spirit buttons and wearing certain items each day, such as sunglasses one day and suspenders the other. To enhance school spirit, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes sponsored a bonfire. At the winning game, Karen Webber was crowned as the Homecoming Queen, and the band performed a special salute to America. Following the game, students and alumni after entering a foyer decorated by Student Council members to represent the four seasons, enjoyed a dance complete with video entertainment. The decorated hallways, spirit buttons, bonfire, winning game, and dance make the week a great celebration. 78 Homecoming Queen 1987 — Karen Webber. Alumni at the big game: Chris Jensen, Paul Harris.
