SPORTS HOMECOMING Tiger Time Tunnel Homecoming occured during exam week this year, but that didn't dampen the spirit of CHS students who entered the “Tiger Time Tunnel. In order to celebrate the occasion, each day of Homecoming week was designated as a special time period, and students dressed up accordingly. Costumed students could be seen participating in the pie-in-the-face contest (Mr. Alderman got it), buying links for the spirit chain (the Seniors won), and attending a rain-drenched bonfire. Dena Curry was named Homecoming Queen, while the Tigers were victorious over Sanger in the Homecoming game. A dance honoring all alumni was held afterwards to end the week and conclude the Tiger Time Tunnel. b ▲ a. The theme for the 1982 Homecoming was 'Tiger Time Tunnel. b. The hard work paid off in a 8-3-1 record and a share of the District 10AAA title. The Tigers were 5-1-0 in district action, 2-0-1 in non-district competition, and 1-1-0 in the state playoffs. The Tigers opened up the season with a scrimmage game against Wolfe City in which the Tigers blanked the Wolves 3-0. Commerce played one more scrimmage game before entering the preseason against the Farmersville Farmers. The Annual Booster Club Bar-B-Que was a success as the Tigers shut out the Farmers, 2-0. The Tigers' season opener was played in North Lamar Panther territory, and the Tigers proved to be owners of the real estate by blitzing the Panthers 20-6. The Tigers' next opponent was another Panther, the Quinlan Panthers. Sloppy play and turnovers plagued the Tigers as the Panthers won a moral victory 14-14. The Tigers took their revenge out on arch-rival Cooper, slaughtering them 42-6. The Tigers' quickness proved to be too much for the worn-down Bulldogs as Commerce breezed to an easy victory in what is usually a dogfight. The Tigers opened up district play on their home field, but the invading warriors from Bonham ended up as victors. The Tigers bit down hard and played tough football, but they came up short, 15-24. This would be the only loss the Tigers would suffer in district action. 52 This page sponsored by DR. AND MRS WENDELL BRYANT - Psychological Services The Tigers next traveled to Whitesboro where they slashed the Wildcats, 33-6 to spoil their homecoming celebrations, but the homecoming celebrations for the Tigers were insured by a thorough beating of Sanger, 45-12. The Tigers commanded the entire game against Princeton, ending up with a shutout, 26-0, while the victory against the Lake Dallas Falcons was an annihilation, 40-2. The Tigers went Trailways to Holliday for a non-district game and came up short against the tough 2A school, 7-21 The game of the year was played at Wylie Pirate stadium in Wylie. The district title was on the line. If they won they would be district co-champ, but if they lost the season would be over. At the end of the first half things looked dim as the Tigers had trouble generating any kind of offense. The Pirates led at half, 6-0. The Tigers came out fired up for the second half and totally dominated the last two quarters. The final score: 7-6 Commerce. The celebration was tremendous. For the first time in 6 years the Tigers were in the state playoffs. The Tigers advanced to Bi-district to face the Bowie Jackrabbits. The Tigers took the lead seconds before half time, 7-6, a lead they would never relinquish as they advanced to Area by winning, 20-13. The Tigers next faced the Van Vandals in what proved to be the last game of the season as the Vandals shocked the Tigers with 2 quick touchdowns, and went on to win, 42-15. The Tigers rolled up 3,248 total yards and scored 259 points in only 10 games. The leading rusher for Commerce was Greg Wilson who had 711 yards on 85 carries for an average of 8.4 yards per carry. The Tigers held their opponents to only 1766 yards and 91 points. These figures tell the story of the Tigers' success. Many honors were bestowed upon the District 10AAA co-champs. The following Tigers were named to the All-District Team: on offense were Vencente Galloway, D.A. Morrison, Kevin Bryant, Eddie Weatherbee and Doyle Shaw; on defense were Vencente Galloway, Kevin Chessherand Kevin Bryant. Tigers who received All-District Honorable Mention were Scott Jones, Marcus Moore, Bruce Smith, Gregg Bass, David Duncan, Jeff Hudson, Doug Blohm, John Lane, Dwayne Mauldin and Greg Wilson. 53 Junior Varsity The 1982 junior Varsity football team proved that they were able to compete in this tough district and compete well. The j.V. Tigers accumulated 2176 yards throughout the year. James Caldwell, the Tiger's leading rusher, contributed 912 yards and 10 touchdowns to the cause. The Tiger's leading receiver was Jeff Richards who caught 8 passes for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Tiger's placed second in district 10AAA with a record of 4-2. Draughn was the leading rusher for the Tiger frosh, and he also played outstanding defense. Defensive standouts included Ben White, Jeff Patton, Brian Gordy, and Buck Longshore. 55 The 1982-83 Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleading squads were honored many times for their superior quality. Both squads placed first in the district at the U.C.A. camp at E.T.S.U. and there they also received a second place award for their pom-pom routine. The Varsity cheerleaders travelled to Dallas to compete at a D.C.A. camp at the University of Dallas. There the varsity placed second overall and brought home many ribbons. The Varsity cheerleaders next went to Lake Highlands High School where they received a superior rating. Besides competing at various camps, the cheerleaders also sold ads for the football program, prepared banners for each football and basketball game, decorated lockers, and led pep rallies before each football game. The cheerleaders, under the guidance of Sponsor Myrna Bass, served the school year round and boosted spirit for all sports. The master of ceremonies for the Senior Banquet was Junior Class President Scott Bedgood. The Senior History was read by Steve Wolf, Cindy Aires and Wesley Ashley. The Wills were read by David Duncan, Dena Curry and Kevin Chessher, while the Prophicies, prepared by the juniors, were read by Junior Class Vice-President Scott Jones. By two in the morning, the music, provided by the sound system of Dennis Anderson augmented by a live drummer, was silent, the decorations removed, the ballroom empty, and the festivities concluded for another year.
