The Student Council was organized to pro- mote better understanding between the student body and the members of the faculty. It oper- ates in the same manner as the United States Congress, but on a small scale. The members, one from each home room and one from each club, were elected by the members of the body they represent. The Council meets every other Monday to discuss and act upon anything of general welfare to the school. Anyone who feels that something should be taken up by the Student Council may tell any representative about it. and the representative may then introduce it at the next meeting. The sponsor of the Student Council is Mr. Droll, whose knowledge of parlia- mentary procedure has proved a great aid at the meetings. The Student Council is a new organization at East Commerce, but we are confident that it will play an important part in student activities in the future. wolf ing infefigenf Ford Rouge Plant 35 Now look closely, said Mr. Zwickey to Helen Famulener, applying the principle of in- dividual attention to stu- dents. Note to freshies: Bookkeep- ing is NOT a dull grind,' in fact at East Commerce the class seems pretty happy about the whole thing. Class co-operation in discuss- ing UN is World co-operation in the making. Well, well, what have we here? You can tell the new student in Miss Scoville-'s Biology flj class by the puzzled expression on his face. Note to Detroit offices: Your worries are over. just take a look at the Commerce Office Machines class-not only good-looking, but efficient and well-trained, too. We bet you just can't Wait 'fill they grad- uate! Everything said above about Commerce goes for East Com- merce too. The proof is in the picture! On the job, Violet Korecki makes sure the customer is satisfied in her choice. Lily Larson operates the mark- ing machine in the receiving TOOH1. COOPERATIVE RETAIL t The cooperative-retail program was started in September, 1943, under the guidance of Mrs. Hortense O'Shea. This plan is run on the rotation basis. During the semester, students work on eight different jobs and learn all about the running of a retail store. Students are assigned to positions in selling, Wrapping, and stock Work, and to clerical positions in advertising, merchandising, personnel, and other offices. Only students with junior executive traits are chosen to work on the cooperative-retail program. This ability to earn While in school has made it possible for many students who otherwise might have found it necessary to seek full-time employment to complete their high school educa- tion. D 38 COOPERATIVE OFFICE PROGRAM Geraldine Obrosey uses her best adding machine technique at the National Bank of Detroit. Betty Stahlberger, stenogtapher, takes dictation from Mr. Mut- dock of the Michigan Mutual Liability Company, An important innovation of business education was begun in the Detroit high schools with the introduction in March, 1943, of the cooperative-office program at the High School of Commerce under Miss Louise Henderson. This plan has made it possible for a student to alternate his time between the classroom and his place of Work by Working four hours a day in an office and studying four hours a day at school. During the school year 1945-1946, approximately two hundred and fifty stu- dents of Commerce participated in the cooperative-office program. Their Work has consisted of various positions such as filer, receptionist, calculator operator, NCR operator, bookkeeping machine operator, typist, stenographer, bookkeeper, and so forth. The employers have assumed with enthusiasm their share of the respon- sibilities and duties under the program and have given the school excellent cooperation. 39 East Commerce Office Machines are shown in operation by Mar- jorie Misch, Antoinette Caruso, and Margaret Ann Pastoria. PRODUCTION . . . Behind that closed door on the main floor tRoom 167 to the uninitiatedl all sorts of books, pamphlets, and other essential supplies for the Board of Education are being produced daily. This is our own special Production Department which is under the supervision oi Miss Frances Stubbs. The busy helpers are none other than the students ofthe High School of Commerce. They receive two and one-half hours credit for working forty-five minutes daily for one semester which, I might add, is voluntary. After training for one complete semester, their names are added to the Board of Education payroll and from then on they are paid for their assistance. A number oi complicated machines such as the electric mimeograph, electric multi- graph. electric paper cutter, electric typewriters, and electric multilith are in constant use from 8:30 a. m., to 4:30 p. m.
