Through team-work and perseverance the Auditors won nine games and lost but one. The only defeat came at the hands of the Cass Tech team. Later this was avenged by a return game in which the Auditors emerged the victors. Other teams defeated by the Auditors were: Guadalupe, three gamesg Trinity All Stars, two games, East Commerce, two gamesg and Wilbur Wright, one game. The first victory over East Commerce brought the coveted trophy back to Commerce. East Commerce Basketball The seasonal basketball team of 1942-43 was carried on through the facilities of the Barbour Intermediate gym and ended with a total of three games chalked up to victory out of ten. Mr. Charles McDonald, new coach of the Cardinals, was faced with the prospect of developing a squad that was closely restricted because of a number of part-time war jobs held by the team mates. The third game of the season saw the loss of the coveted trophy to Commerce after a year's possession of it. The Cardinals played a comeback game with the Auditors which was held in the Barbour gym and the East Commerce squad was again defeated. Other games were staged with House teams from Eastern and Southeastern and a few church teams. Captain T. Zontini, leading scorer, will form part of the nucleus of next season's team along with L. Hoke and G. Petros. The guarding of J. Belko, along with the never-dying spirit of D. Sawyer, M. lanuzzi, and R. Hermann will be missed next season because of their graduation in June. fx we ol f M -' l ,A 1 ' V, - zwxgfgf , 3 wbssff ' Q f Q 5595 QQ 4 Ca ul' xx 1 164 pi if qi ,Q 1 X f if 15 SX A 4 A ,K 4 ey , .. 3 DEAR DIARY: October 1 -Today I decided to join a club and meet some new girls. The Shorthand Scribes seem awfully nice, and we are planning some interesting activities for the rest of the semester. Rose joined the Admetus Club. October 20-New knitting project started. Click, click, click, that's all I hear. All I see is wool. Oops! I sat on some knitting needles. Well, at least it's for victory. Even I might learn to make afghans. October 22-I raced like blazes to keep up with the dictation for the hundred word award. How do people ever write one-hundred forty? October 28-Freshies, Maybees, and Seniors danced from three to five at the Freshie Dance. Gosh! Are my dogs sore! That reminds me-the refreshments were luscious. November 3-We held our 12B and 12A elections today. Bill Noble and Frieda Cole- man were the victors. November 17-I came to school with my feet practically frozen. I have just begun to realize that winter is right around the corner, and so is Thanksgiving. December 23-The last day of school before vacation, with Christmas just two days away. Our school Christmas present was a grand assembly. The seniors put on a skit entitled The Army That Doesn't Wear a Uniform, and we saw a movie, The Champions Write. Maybe I'd better not play all vacation. January 21 -My voice is hoarse as a result of cheering for my good Alma Mater. We won a close basketball game with Wilbur Wright. Score 17-16. A cheer for Gerry, Don, and Ernie. January 23-The seniors are dancing tonight at the Book-Cadillac to the music of Lou Fid1er's orchestra. Wish I were a senior, but it won't be long now. January 25-The war changed the usual senior luncheon to a home-made affair. Box lunches in the Wayne library. From the outside it sounded like fun. January 26-The seniors donned their caps and gowns today and received their diplomas. How we all envy them! I wonder if I'l1 look as dignified next semester. February 2-I'm a senior at last. Something new is in store for us-just to keep us awake. Physical Fitness. The first few days are the toughest. Just call me Fatigued Flossief' March 9-Today we cast our ballots for 12A officiers. Bill Noble was reelected president. March 12-Once again our basketball team brought home the bacon. We topped the victory over Wilbur Wright with a winning over East Commerce. Score 13-11. Gorecki and Trudeau, take your bows. March 15-I missed a few of my friends today and later discovered they had begun work on the Cooperative Plan. School four hours-work four hours. That's the new way to help win the war. March 18-Even we seniors wore green today to honor both Michael O'Leary and the Freshie Dance. We glided to the music of the Cass Tech. Dance Band and later ate and drank the free refreshments. Boo! Hoo! No more weiners. March 29-The entire student body was shiny today. We were all slicked up for our visit from the Detroit Free Press Camera Caravan. I hope the photographer caught me in a dignified pose. ' March 30-Senior committees were chosen today by the class oflicers to make our last semester of school more pleasant. I helped cut the class ribbons. April 14-Today I began work in the Woman's Hospital where we are helping the Girl Reserves to make necessary bandages for the Women's Field Army. It's hard work in a way, but fun, too. April 21, 22-Cleanup days for the seniors. I wore a very light suit, and all the boys came to school in coats and ties. The individual and group pictures were taken for the Revei le. April 28-Bicycles, baseballs, and tennis rackets were the equipment dragged along on the senior outing held at Rouge Park. The weather was perfect, the lunch was good, and the games were fun. I got a nice red face out of it. May 21 -Gay laughter filled Cass Auditorium tonight as we watched Don't Take My Penny. How I sigh when I think of all the fine actors and actresses that will be lost to Commerce on Commencement Day. May 22-I can hardly wait for the theater party, the Decoration Day picnic, the senior prom, and the boat trip. It's great to be a senior! Each friendship is a sun-ray, and they blend as sun-rays do, Into a lengthy spray of light-a bright one at that, too! fAnd we remember th,at's the way we should have been in school ll When old friends reminisce. Now the spell has thickened and we wonder if it's so That time has placed Stan Halverson in an operatic show, And is Mike Ianuzzi still a handsome giggolo? We knew Juanita Kaiser planned on South Somoliland As the fashion place to start her missionary stand, But we never knew Joe Balgenorth would be a strip-tease fan! And when it came to music-Doug Harbison and Pete Were known by all the students as the team you couldn't beat, But then we'll think of Betty Lou-now isn't that a treat? Silvio Petrella did things in a novel way His early-morning speeches were the high-spots of the day- M. Hessler says he talks so much there's nothing left to say! Remember Arnold Brink and all the boys when they got brushes And all the girls like Millie D. and all their high-school crushes, And how did Frenchy always rate those sudden man-power rushes? Johnnie Belko's now a banker-Ruth Dempsey joined the stage, Johnnie now is called a bird-in a guilded cage. Now isn't he the bright spot on this memory-book page. Qlnfo at the desk.J Teaching World War History has claimed Ardella Brooks, i The movies claimed Ruth Lothamer-who wouldn't with those looks! And D. A. Donald Ricketts claims an allergy to crooks! Among these are the adult refresher courses, organized in cooperation with the United States Employment Service, in which more than three hundred students have been trained since October, 1942, the cooperative ofiice and school classes, enrolling one hundred sixty studentsg and the special Saturday oiiice machines classes, to which high school seniors employed by the Federal Reserve Bank have been assigned. Four-f our Cooperatives Four-four time is marching time, and Commerce Cooperatives, now studying and working on a four-four schedule, are helping with the march to victory. For four hours a day, from eight to twelve in the morning or from one to five in the afternoon, they are Working in business oiiices doing stenographic work, typing, filing, operat- ing ofiice machines, performing general clerical duties, and working in mailing rooms. During an additional four hours they are in classes at Commerce. The students are assigned to positions in pairs 3 while one works the other studies and vice versa. Nearly one-hundred fifty 11A and 12B students, many of them transferred from other Detroit high schools since March 1, are participating in this plan. Located as it is in the downtown area, the High School of Commerce is ideally located for such a set-up. Most of the companies employing students are within easy Walking distance. They include the Children's Aid Society, Dun and Bradstreet Inc., the Engineering Division of the United States Army, the Industrial National Bank, the S. S. Kresge Company, the Larrowe Milling Company, the Michigan Bell Telephone Company, the Michigan Mutual Liability Company, the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company, the Packard Motor Car Company, the Standard Accident Insurance Company, and the War Ordnance Department. Miss Louise Henderson, a member of the High School of Commerce faculty, who has had ten years of experience as a stenographer and secretary, is acting as coordin- ator. Her duties include visits to the oiiices where cooperative students are employed and conferences with students and employers regarding school and ofiice problems. Adult Refresher Courses More than three hundred students have been enrolled in the day school adult classes, organized at the High School of Commerce through the Office of the United States Employment Service, since October 19, 1942. The majority of adults taking the refresher courses have been former business workers, again entering the business world in the cause of the war effort. They have received instruction in shorthand, typewriting, calculating machines, book- keeping machines, billing machines, dictaphones, the ediphone, mimeographing, ofiice filing, business English, business mathematics, and general clerical work. Classes have been organized in two groups meeting five days a week, one group meets from 8 a.m. to 12:00 noon, the other from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. Banking Course The Federal Reserve Bank selected one hundred forty June graduates from Detroit high schools, including approximately twenty-five from the High School of Commerce, for oliice positions to begin regular work June 28. To be considered for these positions the applicant had to have a minimum rate of forty words per minute on the typewriterg those who were able to operate fifty or sixty words per minute were paid proportionately higher. To increase efficiency of prospective employees, classes were organized to meet at the High School of Commerce every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., throughout the months of May and June, for concentrated practice on typewriters, Szxty seven calculators, and special machines. Students were paid sixty cents an hour by the bank while attending these Saturday classes. These employees will be assigned to operate adding and calculating machinesg others to operate machines especially built for banks. Still others will be used as assignment readers, and in general oflice work. . Cooperative Retailing Another division of students will be organized in cooperative retailing positions in September, 1943, in response to the needs of a number of Detroit retail stores.
