REVEILLE FOIl NINETEEN TIIIRTY-FIVE PUBLISHED BY THE REVEILLE STAFF HIGH SCHOOL OF COMMERCE DETROIT, MICHIGAN v9 7 A FUREWGIRD THE Staff of 1935 brings to you this Reveille in the hope that you will derive great pleasure when glancing through its pages, both now and in future years. May your memories always be pleasant ones. CIINTENTS Administration and Faculty Page 7 Classes . . . . Page 13 Activities . . . Page 57 Athletics . . . Page 71 Features . . . Page 77 4? MIS S ESTHEII MeCOY D E D I C A T I 0 N IN appreciation of and gratitude for her friendliness and helpful- ness, we, the members of the Senior Class of 1935, dedicate this year's Reveille to Miss Esther McCoy. f L . Reveille The bugle trilled, and the kettledruin rolled! Cn the morning air, still clear and cold, Came the sound of the early reveille Announcing the birth of a bright new day. I thrilled to perceive the world awoke As out on the air the reveille broke! The echo returned in the same clear tone, But the camp was astir, and a deep, joyous drone Murmured and breathed as excitement profound Swelled through the camp and then! not a sound. Expectancy reigned- Now the waiting is overg excitementys at bayg The camp has received its Reveille! JANE DAVIES l6l 0-? 0'-ff DMINIST,RATl0N UQ? 0-'f' 0-9' rf L 1935 REVEILLE AADMINISTRATIUN J. L. The final evaluation has been made. Are you satisfied with it as it stands? During your years of high school training your fellow students and your teachers have seemed rather merciless at times in their criticism. It was an attempt on their part to develop the best qualities in your personality and restrain the less admirable onesg to strengthen your weak points and make outstanding your strong Ones. You must become your own critic now. You must face yourself honestly. You cannot close your eyes to your weaknesses nor refuse to admit your strength without living a distorted, unbalanced life. Qthers will see you as you areg you will see an untrue image. But if you are the alert and honest person that I believe you are, you have learned to evaluate yourself without prejudice and without flinching. You are even now checking up your personal assets and liabilities and working out a plan by which, through the years to come, you will continue to grow. The stronger you grow the more valuable you will be to society. JAMES L. HoL'rscLAw, Z,l'l.IIL'l.f7fII, lliglz School of COHL11'lCl'lfU,' .Sillf7fl Z'l.,K'flItj l,l'f1lFI.f'UI,. Gfs began. The first few weeks found us all in a daze. VVC were just another group of new students, who didn't realize the significance of a Postgraduate Secretarial Course at the High School of Commerce. As the work seemed complicated to most of us. we became a bit discouraged and began to wonder if we could ever attain our goal. Fre uent talks of ins Jiration and encouragement given b f our advisor, Miss fl n as ' 1 Maxwell Munroe, spurred us on and soon we began to realize that only through hard stud and endurance could we ever ho we to achieve success and o forth into Y . . the world as ca Jable secretaries and stenoffra Jhers. Determined that We would 1 . I 3 be victorious as those before us had been, we set to work, and thus began our happy career at Commerce. Cheerful, smiling faces soon took the place of anxious, puzzled ones and friendships began to take root and blossom, Frost bites and pop-corn balls will always taste good to us and bring happy memories of postgraduate good times. Now, as the graduates of 1935 complete their year at Commerce, we begin to look into the future. VX'e hope that it holds the rich reward for us that it has held for many of our predecessors, many of whom now hold attractive positions. Erland Gotberg and Doris Fortain are among the most fortunate of recent graduates. Erland became secretary to the manager of the Book-Cadillac Hotel, working there from February, 1933, to February, 1934. He was then transferred to Dayton, Ohio, and is now secretary to the manager of the Van Cleve Hotel. Doris is assistant hostess on the steamship North .Xmerican of the C. L. and G. B. T. Company. She is secretary to one of the owners. The postgraduates of 1935 hope soon to be listed among those who are doing unusual and worth-while things. An oft-repeated question is, 'tVVhere do all these students come from ? Every high school in Detroit is represented-Northwestern, Central, Cooley, Southastern, Northern, St. Catherine. and Pershing by the largest number. Insti- tutions of higher learning: Vlfayne University, Michigan State College, the University of Michigan, the University of Detroit, Marygrove College, Adrian College, and a half-dozen other colleges and universities are represented. States as far south as Kentucky and as far east as New York have helped make up the class of 1935. The magnet drawing such a variety of students to the school is the excellence of the course itself begun in 1923 under the capable direction of Miss Munroe, and now recognized as one of the most complete and inexpensive one-year secre- tarial courses in the country. The 1935 Postgraduate Class looks to the future with good cheer. May that which vw' have attained Gmc IIS Mimclz l701i0l'v, never shame. 1501 Postgraduates T, sx'1.x'EsTER B, HAXXA K. THE VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM won its fourth consecutive opening-season game, when it defeated Denby 28 to 19. The annual varsity-alumni game was one of thrills and spills, the score being constantly in the balance, but when the game was halted both teams were credited with 18 points. The auditors played their most outstanding game of the season, when they opposed Miller's varsity team, which later became the IVestside championship team. Michail Gergell was elected captain, as well as the best defensive man on the squad. To Albert Yagnetti was awarded the honor of being the best offensive player on the team. He was also considered the I.uckiest,' by his teammates. The smallest man of the squad, Clifford Goodhue, was named the Hscrappiestl' player. Jacob Kofender with Dick Rundell and Holland Hilton with Clifford Goodhue, were alternated at the forward positions. Albert Vagnetti played center. but was later shifted to guard with Jack Collon or Michael Gergell. Wfilfred Leach was reserved for the center position, and VValter Burns as a guard. As all but two of the players will return next year, Coach Hubel antici- pates a more successful season. l76l - . .257 Serand limi' fI.cftm liiglmtlflflilill GEORHIXE, SAMl'liL KAl.lil', TIIOIXIAS SHEEIIAN CCuachJ. THE VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM has better prospects of becoming a winning team this season than any in the last live years have had. Fifty- three players responded to the first call for spring practice. The team is weak in offensive play, but their brilliancy on the defensive side greatly offsets that weakness. - The experience that most of the regulars acquired in competition last season should aid in turning out a winning combination, says Coach Edward Hubel. THE VARSITY TENNIS TEAM has been steadily improving during the last few years, and seemed to be most outstanding the past season. Before the first scheduled match, sixteen players were eagerly striving to gain positions on the squad. Coach Robert McGregor remarked that he had never before had a more eager and responsive group of players under his supervision. Second RofuvMR, MCGREGOR Cffoachj. All the world seemed filled with the golden prairie grass as the sunis last golden fingers slowly released the horizon, and sank unwillingly from sight. Away in the distance a tiny dot was moving. It grew and grew. until it became a prairie schooner, big and white, with two weary horses drawing it slowly into the vast, silent nowhere of the prairie. A man slouched on the seat, the reins dangling loosely from his wrist. Beside him sat a dog whose patient eyes were wide and alert, his tongue hanging from his mouth. The great white canvas cover, opened at the rear of the wagon, framed a woman sitting on a box, cradling in her tired arms a tiny bit of humanity. The woman gazed unwinkingly across the now shadowy prairie, her eyes looking strained and anxious as she clasped her baby tighter. On went the wagon, creaking, swaying, groaning. The prairie night closed down, wrapping soft dark fingers about the little family. They disappeared from view within the shadowed stillness of the vast prairie ....... It roared through the night, its whistle shrilling a warning into the stillness. Behind it streamed a black ribbon of smoke, desecrating the gorgeous whiteness of the snow. The giant monster lied onward, the shrieking whistle crashing through the silence, the ribbon of smoke endlessly streaming behind. It passed between high white mountains, their noble summits rising majestically into the clouds. It passed through great roaring cities and tiny sleeping villages. It hooted its way through long dark tunnelsg it swept round breath-taking curves, its whistle shrilling wildly, its black smoke swirling upward ....... It was long and low and slim. The sun glinted on its polished silver trimmings and glistened on its bright, red body as it flashed by It took the hill with ease, shouting aloud its warning. i The girl at the wheel was small and proud. She pressed her foot more firmly on the gas as they shot upward, her golden hair and brilliant scarf whipping out behind her in the stiff breeze. A smile hovered on her lips, and her gloved hand once more found the horn, an imperious warning to others to beware of this leaping, throbbing creature. The dog beside her, eyes bright and glistening, ears cocked, barked his delight. Again the horn shouted its imperious warning, the top of the hill was reached! They swept recklessly down the other side--past the dancing lake and scattered housesg the sun glinting on the polished silver trimmings and glistening on the bright, red body as it fiashed by ....... MONDAY, FEBRUARY Z5 T F T The annual Popularity Contest was spon- sored by the Admetus Club. One of the most important factors stressed in this project was the scholastic standing of the candidates. According to the Admetus Club, if a student is interested in attain- ing popularity, he should think of his studies first. And that, my friends, is the answer to that never-ending question, How can I be popular? HURSDAY, MARCH 28 The G. A. VVorldl Graduation rhymes with fascination, and fascinating it isg but when the last mile approaches it's only a few who hold a steady spotlight and one object of ambition. However, in a few years look up Jule Brunett and find if her musical career was realized, or Thelma Engles and see if sheis a secretary or a farmer's wife. As a prognosticator we're terrible, but according to the symptoms, Walter Prezelinski will be a banker-Rileigh Nicholson a composer if he lives long enough, and Norma Campbell either an actress or a newspaper editor. She doesnlt know which and we can't help her. Margaret DeRiemaker will help what ails you, as she's going to be a nurse. Ida Mae Sharpe is preparing for the higher type of learning, college. Others don't know which sand dune to leave their footprints in. They're afraid it will get in their eyes. Frank Schikora says, lt's not what you know, but who you know. That's pull, I believe-Delores Knoth may go to college or marry, perhaps both. jo Anshaw, Eleanor Kosmalski, Irma Martin and Laura Frank talk in terms of matrimony rather than careers. Frederick Radzom opines that he'll join the army-of unemployed! Donald Patterson will take a trip to New York- then heaven knows what! -VVilbur Sheibles is interested in radio, but won't talk out loud. lirdman Bohle is slated for the farm, but they don't need singers there, or am I presumptuous P-Dorothy Fahner says, Tomorrow will take care of itself.',-Philanienia Perodota felt great coming to school, but feels better leaving it.-Advises freshmen, lt's better to know everything about one thing, than one thing about everything. Adell George just doesn't care if there's a laugh to be had. Laugh, she says, K' and the world laughs with youg frown and it laughs at youf,-Ruth Pfeffer plans to stay local and find what she's missed.vMildred Stahl and Alice Von Beyer want jobs QWhat are them thar things?j.-Arlene Binder is already bound.-Nelda Rieck is puzzled over which suitor is the one to take home.-Lois Luth is all prepared for any job-ditto the above parenthesis.-Richard Vllebster is complacent about it all.-Admits if he ever had any energy he still has it, for it's not been used.-Jean Armstrong is waiting by the side of the road for something that so far is enigmatic. So when the future has become the past, have out your list of names and compare what was supposed to be, with what isgif you can find out. ln the meantime, bon voyage, seniors. and remember that no matter how times change you can't, can't change time. lt marches on! l37l REVEILLE A19 January Senior Mock Election TITLE Popular Girl . .
