FRONT ROW: Dorothy Prewett, Walter Grande, Ardelle Hill, Norman McGibbon, Dorothy Hutchinson, Virgil Prater. THE PATSY The Patsy was presented by the June '45 class April 20, under the direction of Mr. Matson. Although the cast had no previous dramatic experi- ence, each carried his part creditably. The play is a humorous three-act comedy, depicting the difficulties of the usual American family. The story concerns Patricia, a girl who runs second to her older sister . She is the Patsy who is to blame whenever anything goes wrong. Her father, a traveling man, is on her side and finally declares his inde- pendence and hers by putting Ma in her proper place. Commerce may well be proud of its service men and women, They are active on battle fronts the world over, and with the true spirit of the Stenogs they are fighting hard and well. To each and every one of them go our heart- felt wishes for a speedy victory and a safe return, We want to pay special tribute to those Commerce boys and girls who gave their lives for our country in this war. Though it is sad that they should have died so young, there is some comfort in the knowledge that they paidjhe supreme sacrifice so that others might live in peace and security. Weshall always remember them. Nor shall your story be forgot While Fame his record keeps, And Honor points the hallowed spot Where Valor proudly sleeps. -Theodore O'Hara. firw QF' W gy K Xt WHA Q52 f QQXQQS f YW 'Sf QS 4 f QQ 5. Before the season started the squad was rated the cellar Spot by rival coaches because of the lgk of height and experience. The Stenogs got off to a slow start as they bowed to Jefferson 40-I9, but snapped out of it and downed Lincoln 26-24 and Franklin 29-18. They next lost to Roosevelt by 25-22, after forcing them into two overtime periods, but came back to defeat Benson. Their improvement over the early part of the season is shown by the fact that Jefferson had a hard time edging out a 36-30 win in the second half. The Cardinals of Lincoln edged the locals 30-28 while playing in their own den, but the boysievened it up when they upset the Roosevelt squad, which the preceding week had handed Washington the only defeat it received all season. Other important second-half wins were repeat victories over Benson, Franklin, and Sabin, insuring a final standing of .500 with eight wins and eight losses. The boys playing on the team are listed below. W first five mentioned were the starting line-up, ln several games they played the full game without substitution, BILL PALMQUIST-After missing several games because of a leg injury, Bill's return brought new life to the team. His excellent work at his guard spot earned him an all-city berth. MEL KRAUSE-Hight point honors go to Mel, who is one of the best long shots in the league. lt is practically impossible to stop his floor play and shooting. Mel has a half year of play left. BOB ROBIRDS-Probably the scrappiest man on the team, Bob was continually coming up with the ball against much taller boys. RON MARCOTT--Ron is a valuable cog in the Stenog machine. He made his best showing against Franklin and will be back. GEORGE HUBBARD-Although he played center, George was outstanding as a defensive player. George is planning on joining the army so will not return. BOB HILKEN is the tallest player on the squad. He will be back. PAT DEMARINIS scored the winning basket in the Lincoln game. He has half a season of play remaining. DON STRAND was able to see action in several games. He will return. JERRY MCNEIL was moved up from the Juniors and started in several games. He will be back. CHUCK BAFARO played a good game on the Juniors and was moved up to the varsity. He is only a freshman. FRANK LAWRENCE was not shown much opportunity to strut his stuff, but next year 'he should see much action. DON BARTHOLOMOUS was a faithful, scrappy member of the squad. BASEBALL As this article was written, the team had not been able to hold many outdoor practices because of the weather, but they did manage to beat Gresham and tie Central in scrimmage games. The Commece baseball team was weakened by the loss of a number of sluggers from last year's third place team, but the boys were continually fighting until the final out in the final inning, There were four returning Iettermen, who formed the nucleus of this year's nine. These 'boys were supplemntd by an eager group of rookies up from the Junior squad. All positions were open to everyone trying out at the first of the season. MIKE FAJER is the heaviest slugger on the team and can be counted on to turn in an excellent showing from his position in the outfield. He may also alternate at first base. BILL PALMQUIST has improved much from last year and should win more games. MEL KRAUSE will alternate with Bill as pitcher. When he isn't pitching, he will hold down the keystone sack. GENE MERLO turnediin an impressive recrod last season at third base and should repeat this year. Several promising rookies are: Jerry McNeil, Wes Bartholomoug Don Barfholgmous Chuck Bafaro, Bob Hilken, Don Strand, Ron Marcott, Wallace Brosseau, Billl Geske, Bob Robirds, Fred Robirds, and Augie Gatto.
