PBESIDEIIT HDDIIESS the past four years we have been schooled by'an institution F it that has taught us commercial skillsg but most important to us, that same organization has taught us how to serve and to live f 75 5 'fy effectively with those around us. We have had recorded to our ri .l credit achievement in academic work, but there is no recording PLLHQIP-Lili! bi. of our greatest assets, the fundamentals of living. One might be a very capable worker and yet be a failure in his relations with his fellow men. Such a boy or girl is of little value to his employer or to his community, for he has the brick without the mortar. Character is made up of many qualities. The world is in turmoil today largely because of duplicity and dishonesty. When all the world is upset, we as indi- viduals realize that only honesty and fair play will undoubtedly keep our small, but important lives on a high level. As we start our Hight in life, new problems will arise that we have not had to deal with in school. These problems we face with courage and high endeavor. The same desire to persevere and to conquer, that has been instilled into us by our teachers and by the' difficulty of our lessons, will challenge us to new accomplishments. Society demands that its members be responsible and reliable. We were not allowed to be satisfied with a half com- pleted assignment. We have learned that we must complete the task at hand. The world ahead will many times test our self-control. We know what discipline and disappointment mean. Our school years have given us many opportunities to become emotional, but as we grew through these years, we have succeeded in a measure in acquiring self-control and have learned to readjust ourselves. We shall have great need of these assets tomorrow. Our class has been representative of the ideals of Democracy. During our four years here at The High School of Commerce, we have been taught to get along with those around us. The active part we have taken in club work and in school affairs has developed in us the valuable spirit of cooperation. In our class deci- sions we have often differed in determining the course of action, but we have learned to be tolerant-to give and to take. We leave united and loyal to our school and to the ideals for which it stands. We have faith in one another. Class of January '42, you have the character and the ability to serve your nation. CLASS MOTTO: Keep them Rolling, Keep them Flying, Keep Democracy from Dying. CLASS COLORS: Red and Gray CLASS POEM We are the commercial planes of the future. Three elements have gone into our being: A plane must have raw materials. From two blocks down Powell to ten miles out, From bottom land to Council Crest, From city apartment and country farm, We've been instructed in ways of health, wealth, and happiness, We haven't just learned all the technical formsg We know how to face a pilot's storms And upsets with confident calm. The materials have been constructed so that the plane is sound. A plane must have instruments. From the teacher who demanded accuracy, From the teacher who preferred imagination, From the instructor who taught social science As well as the teacher of business, We have been witnesses to all flying conditions. Now in the down-drafts we encounter We can nose-up and mount her to the sky without mishap. We need never fly blind. A plane must have a destination. Some will become stewards in business, Some will become co-pilots in marriage, Some will be grounded, for a time, in college, Others will enlist in the Service. America has given us an air raid warning, Through the crisis to the All Clear We say to America, Give us your toughest air lane: we can keep flying! H-BYRN IE METTIE. CLASS SONG Through halls of knowledge we have traveled here at Commerce High We've tried to reach your lofty aims and keep your spirit high By joining clubs of every kind and doing studies well. Good friends and true we hope you find That we have served you well.
