In the nineteen years he served as business advisor of the Ledger, the seniors benefited greatly from their contact with this loyal friend of Com- merce. The students and the faculty alike miss his clever witticisms, his scholarship, and his' great capacity for friendship. His was an understanding of humanity that few possess. CLASS COLORS: Red and Gray CLASS POEM We are the commercial planes of the future. Three elements have gone into our being: A plane must have raw materials. From two blocks down Powell to ten miles out, From bottom land to Council Crest, From city apartment and country farm, We've been instructed in ways of health, wealth, and happiness, We haven't just learned all the technical formsg We know how to face a pilot's storms And upsets with confident calm. The materials have been constructed so that the plane is sound. A plane must have instruments. From the teacher who demanded accuracy, From the teacher who preferred imagination, From the instructor who taught social science As well as the teacher of business, We have been witnesses to all flying conditions. Now in the down-drafts we encounter We can nose-up and mount her to the sky without mishap. We need never fly blind. A plane must have a destination. Some will become stewards in business, Some will become co-pilots in marriage, Some will be grounded, for a time, in college, Others will enlist in the Service. America has given us an air raid warning, Through the crisis to the All Clear We say to America, Give us your toughest air lane: we can keep flying! H-BYRN IE METTIE. CLASS SONG Through halls of knowledge we have traveled here at Commerce High We've tried to reach your lofty aims and keep your spirit high By joining clubs of every kind and doing studies well. Good friends and true we hope you find That we have served you well. PBESIDEIIT HDDIIESS the past four years we have been schooled by'an institution F it that has taught us commercial skillsg but most important to us, that same organization has taught us how to serve and to live f 75 5 'fy effectively with those around us. We have had recorded to our ri .l credit achievement in academic work, but there is no recording PLLHQIP-Lili! bi. of our greatest assets, the fundamentals of living. One might be a very capable worker and yet be a failure in his relations with his fellow men. Such a boy or girl is of little value to his employer or to his community, for he has the brick without the mortar. Character is made up of many qualities. The world is in turmoil today largely because of duplicity and dishonesty. When all the world is upset, we as indi- viduals realize that only honesty and fair play will undoubtedly keep our small, but important lives on a high level. As we start our Hight in life, new problems will arise that we have not had to deal with in school. These problems we face with courage and high endeavor. The same desire to persevere and to conquer, that has been instilled into us by our teachers and by the' difficulty of our lessons, will challenge us to new accomplishments. Society demands that its members be responsible and reliable. We were not allowed to be satisfied with a half com- pleted assignment. We have learned that we must complete the task at hand. The world ahead will many times test our self-control. We know what discipline and disappointment mean. Our school years have given us many opportunities to become emotional, but as we grew through these years, we have succeeded in a measure in acquiring self-control and have learned to readjust ourselves. We shall have great need of these assets tomorrow. Our class has been representative of the ideals of Democracy. During our four years here at The High School of Commerce, we have been taught to get along with those around us. The active part we have taken in club work and in school affairs has developed in us the valuable spirit of cooperation. In our class deci- sions we have often differed in determining the course of action, but we have learned to be tolerant-to give and to take. We leave united and loyal to our school and to the ideals for which it stands. We have faith in one another. Class of January '42, you have the character and the ability to serve your nation. I3 -n -n X: f ughfs The Commerce High football squad ended a disastrous season by losing every game in the schedule. Hampered by graduation and the draft, Commerce had only a squad of twenty-three men reporting, and Head Coach Learned and Coach Warren did an able job of moulding these boys into a lighting, scrappy unit. Commerce did not have much weight in the line, but what the team lacked in weight it made up in fight and cooperation. Commerce has a fine crop of juniors coming up with which to build a team. The juniors received their experience, and next year should see Commerce much higher in league standings. LaVerne Hughes and Al Gallucci, right half and left guard, respectively, were chosen to represent Commerce in the annual Milk Bowl Game. The boys worked X out on the All Star Team under Coaches , Gherke and Marineau and acquitted them- rx !, N Al Gallucci selves ably- GNX Acknowledgment should be given to Coach Learned and Coach Warren for their untiring service and cooperation. Though the season was filled with setbacks, the coaches kept the boys fighting against bigger and heavier teams and did not once lose confidence in them. Freshies for the first time entered these halls with an air of ex- pectance, sophomores and juniors entered with the feeling that it was good to be back, and the seniors entered knowing this was their last term and that they were going to do great things-things no other class had accomplished. Thus, we all arrived. After school was organized, the Student Council with a V for Victory and a Red, White, and Blue Booth began selling stu- dent body cards. Under their leadership, within two weeks the school was 100 per cent. Not only should the Council be given orchids, but the students as well, for it has been several years since Com- merce has set a record such as this. The memorable Friday of October 3 will linger in the minds of Commerce stu- dents-for that was the Friday that the new BLOTTER was issued. No more mimeographed, 895 x 11 pages for us. No sir! only the latest produced in Multi- graph copy. This new publication was heartily welcomed, and the school may be justly proud of this new advancement. During the second week of October the freshies were duly inducted into the Halls of Commerce by the seniors. A clever program was presented Activity Period with both the freshies and seniors par- ticipating. The music of the best bands in the land was brought to our gym by remote control from 201. The satisfaction of hearing the music was. a thing of delight to our dance fans. The success of this swing session insured more afternoon dances for us. All will recall that outstanding broad- cast from the stage of the Commerce High School. A galaxy of Stenog stars turned in a most entertaining performance as a climax of a successful Community Chest-U. S. O. Drive. One of the best pep assemblies of the season was an up-to-the-minute descrip- tion of the preliminaries of the Commerce vs. Washington game. When husky Com- merce players were followed onto the Held by the scrubby Colonials, the indifferent Washington rooters were taken by the Stenogs as themselves until the sports broadcaster so ably pointed out that they were the Colonial fans. The highlight of the affair came when one of the brilliant Commerce lads struck a match for the team to warm up on. Of the many International Club suc- cesses the saga of raising Millions for Defense was a most impressive spectacle. The different periods in America's history showing the collection of funds for defense purposes were dramatized. The program inspired all of us to buy Defense Stamps so that we may purchase a bond in order to submerge totalitarianism. In other words, Lick a stamp to lick the dicta- tors. Fourth Avenue Again Commerce came to the top by having the highest record of any high school in the Junior Red Cross Drive. The students should be congratulated on their fine spirit and cooperation in this truly good cause. Only a small part of this money, a penny per person, is given to the national Junior Red Cross. The major part is established in a fund here at Commerce for dental and optical use for the students who need this attention. None of us will forget the day the band really swung out with Swing Low Sweet Chariot. Hope is running high that the band will play some more num- bers in this style. Commerce can now boast of the best obtainable equipment of any high school in the Northwest. This new equipment includes the public address system, the recorder, the movie projector, etc. We are now able to do things that we never thought possible in the past. This equip- ment, also, means that in the future we will have more movies. One of the disappointing features of the term is the fact that our football team did not exactly end the season in first place. But in spite of this, we know the team did its best and that is all we can ask or expect. We wish to extend to every mem- ber of the team our thanks for his fine spirit and cooperation against the tre- mendous odds he faced. Thus, we bring to a close this term's activities as one of the most outstanding in the history of Commerce. Many new and different things were tried and ac- complished, and in all of them the stu- dents were most willing and cooperative. May next term hold even greater suc- cesses.
