If we consider this epigram carefully, we shall find that it expresses our own intellectual state with conciseness and clarity. Even now we have probably forgotten a great deal. In the follow- ing years, we shall forget a great deal more. W'hat shall we have left of our four years' high school training when all our book learning has fled? We shall find that we have retained certain fundamental principles which will guide us through life. What are these basic principles? First, we have learned to live with adherence to the mores of the group. We do not break the laws at will, for we have acquired a respect for the law backed by reverence, not by fear. We do not wreck havoc among our fellow men. Instead, we live in accordance with our statutes. We are educated to obey the laws of nature and the laws of man. Second, we have been taught to observe and to follow the folkway of the community. We must live the way others do or run the risk of humiliation, disgrace, and ostracism. Habits of health, the charm of fine manners, and neatness of appearance have become a part of our lives. Third, we have learned to live in harmony with our neighbors. By neighbors we mean not just the fellow next door, nor across town, but in the next county, the next state, and even the next country.fHarmony must be universal. Through education we have learned to discard our prejudices and to respect the rights of others to their own beliefs even when they conflict with ours. By far the most important thing our four years in high school have given us is the ability to reason with a clear mind. In this world gone mad with intense hatred, malicious greed, and destructive jealousy, reason and tolerance are our only salvation. During these times, when foreign powers are unceasingly deluging our country with propaganda, we must be able to think clearly and must not be swept away by a perpetual bombardment of fallacies. We owe this ability to think, to discriminate, and to judge between issues to our education. Sc with these principles thoroughly established within our characters, we stand on the threshold of life, ready to be graduated into a world of war, strife, and enmity. With these principles to guide us, we may hope to rneet bravely every issue in life, no matter what conditions we may confront. Page Six I
