Page Five - fb ' 'ij LE.RBEB lPresildlen1t's Address OMEONE has said that education is what you have left when you have forgotten all that you ever knew. If we consider this epigram carefully, we shall find that it expresses our own intellectual state with conciseness and clarity. Even now we have probably forgotten a great deal. In the follow- ing years, we shall forget a great deal more. W'hat shall we have left of our four years' high school training when all our book learning has fled? We shall find that we have retained certain fundamental principles which will guide us through life. What are these basic principles? First, we have learned to live with adherence to the mores of the group. We do not break the laws at will, for we have acquired a respect for the law backed by reverence, not by fear. We do not wreck havoc among our fellow men. Instead, we live in accordance with our statutes. We are educated to obey the laws of nature and the laws of man. Second, we have been taught to observe and to follow the folkway of the community. We must live the way others do or run the risk of humiliation, disgrace, and ostracism. Habits of health, the charm of fine manners, and neatness of appearance have become a part of our lives. Third, we have learned to live in harmony with our neighbors. By neighbors we mean not just the fellow next door, nor across town, but in the next county, the next state, and even the next country.fHarmony must be universal. Through education we have learned to discard our prejudices and to respect the rights of others to their own beliefs even when they conflict with ours. By far the most important thing our four years in high school have given us is the ability to reason with a clear mind. In this world gone mad with intense hatred, malicious greed, and destructive jealousy, reason and tolerance are our only salvation. During these times, when foreign powers are unceasingly deluging our country with propaganda, we must be able to think clearly and must not be swept away by a perpetual bombardment of fallacies. We owe this ability to think, to discriminate, and to judge between issues to our education. Sc with these principles thoroughly established within our characters, we stand on the threshold of life, ready to be graduated into a world of war, strife, and enmity. With these principles to guide us, we may hope to rneet bravely every issue in life, no matter what conditions we may confront. BASKETBALL After losing their first four games, the scrappy Stenog machine shifted into high-gear cmd won nine of their remaining contests. Out of the seven games lost, four were lost by three points or less. The others, lost at the beginning of the season, were played at a disadvantage because, all the boys were new- comers, except Maurie Stremich. For the second consecutive year the Stenogs were the smallest aggregation in the league, but whatever they lacked in height they certainly made up in speed and fight. We may well be proud of this year's squad. From every indication Commerce will have another great team next season. Maurice Stremich: Maurie, for the third consecutive year, walked away with the honors of being the most outstanding player in the league and high- point man of the league. This year Maurie broke his former record of 183 points in fourteen games by amassing the tremendous total of 276 points in fifteen contests. Maurie has proved beyond all doubt that he is the greatest player that the league has ever seen. Those who saw the flashy Stenog ace in action saw TOPS in basketball for TOPS in basketball spells STBEMICH. Sam Tosti: Sammy was the midget in the league, but he certainly proved the old adage that dynamite comes in small packages . He was a consistent scorer all seasotn and intercepted many passes of the opponents. Edward Hayes: Eddie played a good game at all times and showed plenty of the fight that is characteristic of Commerce teams. He was good for many points from pivot shots and was very effective on defense. lohn Karamanos: Iohnny played a great game under the backboard and was a key figure of the air-tight defense of Commerce. He shows great promise and will be back next season. Walter Cooney: Walt showed plenty of fight and was a bulwark at defense. He was dangerous at all times and should be a valuable asset to the team next year. ' Don Mitchell: Don played a steady game all season and showed the cool- ness that characterizes good ball players. Douglas Fosbury: Doug didn't get started until late in the season, but in his last few games he showed great improvement. He should cause opponents plenty of trouble next season. Donald 'O'Brien: Don is very fast and tricky. He is an excellent marksman and is dangerous at all times. Don should be good for many points next season, and he will bear plenty of watching. Edward Policrh: Eddie was a very capable reserve this season and handled the ball well. Bob Zimmerman, Melvin Strand, and Norman Berlant played good ball this year and show great promise. All three ot these boys are fast and are good ball handlers. Coach Ed Warren: Coach Warren turned in the best coaching job of the season by producing the fastest charging and one of the most dangerous squads in the league. He accomplished this feat with but one regular and two reserves from last year's squad. This was Mr. Warren's first year as head basketball coach and under him Commerce should have many more successful seasons. Page Tltirty-five LE.DBE.K?, BASEBALL At this time Commerce is dwelling in the cellar of the league with no victories in four starts. Although this looks like a lean year for the Stenogs, the picture is not as bad as it may seem. The boys are gradually rounding into shape and no doubt will garner a few victories before the end of the season. All of the players, except four, are either freshmen or sophomores and will be back for from one to three more seasons. Players that have been outstanding so far this season are Allensworth, Karamanos, Cardelli, Swenson, Woodworth, and Zimmerman. Allensworth, the only twayear letterman on the team, is the ace pitcher. Karamanos is playing sparkling ball at first base. With a little more experience he should also develop into one of the best pitchers in the league. All that he lacks is control, and experience will give him that. Al Cardelli covers plenty of ground in centerfield, and so far this season he and Karamanos have been the big guns behind the Commerce attack. Woodworth is playing a bang-up game at shortstop and looks good at the plate. Zimmerman is a fast man in the field. He can play third base and left field with equal ease. Coach Dawson: This is Charlie Dawson's eleventh year as head base- ball coach at Commerce. During these past eleven years he has produced some of the best and scrappiest teams in the league. As practically every player is retuming next year, Coach Dawson should have a highly successful season. BOYS TENNIS AND GOLF The Commerce golf squad is one of the most dangerous teams in the league and no doubt will finish the season near the top. The squad includes Edward Hayes, Walter Cooney, Bob Meadows, Robert Acton. The alternates are Butler and Skinner. The Commerce racket wielders have played only one match so far this season, but with such players as Bob Armstrong and Frank Posedel on the team, the Stenogs will probably win most of their games. GIRLS TENNIS Not much is expected of the girls this year as they are all newcomers. However, every player on this year's team will be back next year and Com- merce should produce one of the best girls' tennis teams in the league. Mem- bers ot the team include Betty Tracey, Ester Green, Vera Bergeron, Maloa Rice, and Barbara Nelson. ' TRACK Charles Altorfer and Bill Taylor have been burning up the cinder paths this year in the various track meets of the city. Charles has placed in every meet. This is Chuck's fourth and final year as one of the top 880 yard men for the Stenogs. Bill Taylor has piled up points in every meet.
