Freshmen openly disbelieve, sophomores are skep- tical, juniors are not quite sure, but Commerce seniors always know that the saddest day of life is the day a student bids goodbye to his school, his teachers, his friends, and the many pleasant activities that make up life in the High School of Commerce. But it must ever be so. Those who would make their own way in the world often find it necessary to break old ties, leave pleasant friends and acquaintances, forsake ease and comfort, to battle strenuously for fortune greater than that already achieved. It was just such circumstances that made California. People poured in when gold was discovered. They abandoned, often, friends and home to seek their fortune in gold. San Francisco was the gateway to wealth. Thousands came to the city to make their way from the seaport town to the regions which offered wealth in gold for those who found it. The drawing on the preceding page, sketched from an old print, shows San Francisco Bay in 1849 jammed with ships, abandoned by officers and crew who have gone to the mines in search of gold.
