Carry me back to her grace and pity! For I think I could not rest Afar from her mighty breast. She is fairer than others are Whom they sing the beauties of. Her heart is a song and a star - .My cool, grey city of love.1 Tho they tear the rose from her brow To her is ever my vow, liver to her I give my duty ed First in rapture and first in beauty, Wayward, passionate, brave, Glad of the life God gave - The sea-winds are her kiss, And the sea-gull is her dove, Clcanly and strange she is - Aly cool, grey city of love. The winds of the future wait At the iron walls of her Gate, And the western ocean breaks in thunder, And the western stars go slowly under, And her gaze is ever West - In the dream of her young unrest. Her sea is a voice that calls, And her star a voice above, And her wind a voice on her walls - My cool, grey city of love. Tho they stay her feet at the dance, In her is the far romance. Under the rain of winter falling, Vine and rose will await recalling. Tho the dark be cold and blind, Yet her sea-fogjs touch is kind, And her mightier caress Is joy and pain thereof, And great is thy tenderness O cool, grey city of love! The High School of Commerce-that is, part of its buildings-will be forty years old in December. But the school traces its beginnings much further back than December, 1910. California was a very young state in 1883 when Commerce was born. By the use of a little imagination one can see cer- tain similarities in the development of California into a state and Commerce into a high school with a separate and distinct entity. It may be true, perhaps, that these similarities are nothing more than phe- nomena characteristic to all young, developing organi- zations. But certainly they are interesting enough to warrant a brief exposition of their nature. Our state's history shows that as California pro- gressed toward statehood in the Union, the flags of various countries flew over the land to proclaim its rulers. The banners of old Spain, of Mexico, newly freed from Spanish domination, and of the tempestu- ous California Republic, each symbolized the moment of power and glory of those who would rule the vast area. Manifest Destiny, as many people of the times re- garded it, was not, however, to be denied. In 1848 the region known as California came under the jurisdiction of the United States and a new flag fluttered over the land. Gold brought people, thousands of them, enough to insure immediate statehood without a long grow- ing-period as a territory. Upon September 9, 1850 California became the thirty-First state in the Union. The High School of Commerce also developed under other banners, but it too had a destiny that could not be denied. Our school history tells us that because San Fran- cisco business men felt there was a need for trained office workers a commercial department was organ- ized in july 1883 at Boys, High School. Today we know this old Boys, High School by another name: Lowell. The next year, 1884, the commercial department was moved into a building on Powell and Clay Streets and named San Francisco Commercial School. Thirty- six students were enrolled. In addition to the Com- mercial subjects, English grammar and composition, and Spanish were offered. It may be well to note in passing that Spanish has always been a study of major emphasis at Commerce, primarily, perhaps, because of its importance in commercial relations with our neighbors to the south, but also because of Californiais rich inheritance from the early Spanish and the great meaningfulness of the language in our state's place-names and early history. In 1914 a special journal, entitled El Tecolote was published entirely in Spanish. The school moved again in 1891 when the Board of Education provided a building at Bush and Stock- ton Streets. Enrollment had now reached 450. A new department was added in 1894-manual training. The school also acquired a new name: Poly- technic High School. Again the commercial department moved. This was in 1900. The new location was in the rear of the now famous Lincoln Grammar School at Fifth and Market Streets. Colonel Charles H. Murphy was appointed principal. The earthquake of April 18, 1906, and the result- ant fire necessitated another move. Plans were formulated to construct a new building for the rapidly growing but gypsy-like Commercial High School. In 1907 property was purchased on Grove Street between Polk and Larkin and construc- tion of a fine new brick building was started. Meanwhile, the students of Commercial High, in need of housing, had to share a building part-time with another school. Commercial retained its own identity as a school, but the building in which its classes were held had an ollicial name and the banners of that school oflicially, if figuratively, flew from its masts. Lowell and Polytechnic have already been mentioned in this story, you have, no doubt, guessed which colors were associated with the school which now housed Commercial High. Yes, it was Mission. Matters could not get worse. There was only room for improvement. It came in December, 1910. The new Commercial High School, shiney in its bright new bricks, proud of its fine light and airy rooms, amazed -tha, M. the at its elevator, and goggled-eyed at the telephones in each room opened for business. Colonel Charles H. Murphy was principal and Mr. James B. Sykes, a teacher of commercial law, was vice principal. It seemed that at last everything was settled. What could be more permanent than a big brick building? But it was not to be. Commercial High seemed to be instilled with the same spirit of wanderlust that drove the earlier adventurers to California, or that moved the state capital as California expanded from San Jose, to Vallejo, to Benicia, to Sacramento success- ively. Truly the spirit of the state was in the school. In 1913 student body and ine brick building picked up and moved once more. This time to the corner of Fell and Franklin Streets. While the building was being moved Commerce went to school at Lowell. A cycle had been completed. At the time of this writing the building is still there where it was moved. We usually call it the Old Building, for in 1925 a New Building was completed on Van Ness Avenue between Fell and Hayes Streets. On December 12, 1912 the name of the school was changed from Commercial High to High School of Commerce. Like the state under whose educational system it functioned, Commerce had progressed from rather indefinite beginnings under a number of banners to a separate and distinct entity with its Own name, gov- ernment, traditions, and colors. She was now ready to settle down and prove what her destiny was. And as California had to gfiht battles, so did the school. What was to be one of the most important legal battles occured in 1915. The voters of San Francisco were asked to vote in March of that year on a Charter Amendment 135D which provided for the exchange of the land fronting 120 feet on Van Ness Avenue and 60 feet on Fell Street, the playfield at that time, for forty acres of the Sutro estate at Land's End. The land offered did not include Sutro Heights nor Sutro Baths. Commercites were against the amendment. They became politicians, in fact, were dubbed kid poli- ticiansn by their opponents. But the Hkid politicians fought the amendment with everything they had, and when the smoke of battle had cleared, they had de- feated the experienced politicians. It was a great battle and a greater victory. Commerce had shown its fighting spirit. Gold first, later the productive value of the soil, the climate, and the promise of wealth and health drew all races and creeds to California. Commerce too drew all races and creeds to its student body. Doubtlessly, it would be stretching words too far to say that gold-in the form of education-drew these students to Commerce. As- suredly, though, there was something of value, just as there was in the state of California that attracted students. And like California, not the least of these people, were the Chinese. But there were other racial groups too. Today, Commerce is as cosmopolitan a high school as one may find anywhere. Here all races, and creeds, meet and work together daily, for mutual as well as self betterment. And this is as it should be, for they and their parents are typical of California's cosmo- politan population in this year - the California centennial anniversary. site? The Journal for June 1909 lists sixteen teachers and the principal. Today at Commerce we have a faculty of 79 and three administrators. We believe we have the best faculty in San Fran- cisco. Other schools may disagree. In San Francisco in 1848, however, there was no opportunity for such interscholastic disagreement. There was only one school with only one teacher, a Mr. Thomas Douglas. The one-room school building was located in Ports- mouth Plaza, on Clay Street and faced Kearny. Near- by was Brannan Place. The school was established April 3, 1848. The first day six children, boys and girls, attended. The largest enrollment at any time was 37. Teacher Thomas Douglas lost his pupils when gold was discovered. The adults deserted San Francisco for the gold mines and, of course, took their children along. Mr. Douglas, a teacher without pupils, thereupon did what everyone else was doing. He too took off for the gold mines. The pen and ink sketch on the previous page was done by Choy Chung from an old print of the school building. p . . ' iv- ' A 1:5 , l S iff?-7 , s Q . Commerce is proud of its democratic system of student government operating by authority of a constitution ratified by the students. Besides the usual student body officers to lead in school activities there are also a Student Congress, to make the gov- erning rules and regulations, and a District Attorney and Student Court to try and to deal out punishment to those who break the school laws. California also has a constitution ratified by the people. The drawing on the previous page depicts Colton Hall in Monterey where the first California constitutional convention met during September and October 1849. The convention assembled in the upper story of the building in a hall thirty by sixty feet in size designed for public meetings. The lower story was divided into school rooms. This stone school building was erected by the Reverend Walter Colton, the First American alcalde in California, who used to build it, the labor of convicts, the taxes on rum, and the banks of the gamblers. Within a month after the constitution was drafted, it was ratihed by the populace. The next year, on September 9, 1850, President Fillmore signed the bill admitting California into the Union. But it was not until the steamship Oregon docked in San Francisco on October 18, 1850 that California learned it had become the thirty-first state in the United States. m4mfZwa,0,4,4wm,.. f J X 1 , .fx , 4 .if 1 Fr' Wi,-14 FALL PRESIDENT... .. . .,.. ...AL YOUNG VICE PRESIDENT. . , . . .DIANE FERAGE SECRETARY .,....., . . . ..,. But it must ever be so. Those who would make their own way in the world often find it necessary to break old ties, leave pleasant friends and acquaintances, forsake ease and comfort, to battle strenuously for fortune greater than that already achieved. It was just such circumstances that made California. People poured in when gold was discovered. They abandoned, often, friends and home to seek their fortune in gold. San Francisco was the gateway to wealth. Thousands came to the city to make their way from the seaport town to the regions which offered wealth in gold for those who found it. The drawing on the preceding page, sketched from an old print, shows San Francisco Bay in 1849 jammed with ships, abandoned by officers and crew who have gone to the mines in search of gold. all 7?4?.. Wherever a student's interests may lie, he can generally find some club or activity to provide for his interests. The drawing of Fort Gunnybagsw portrays the headquarters of one of the most famous organizations in California history, the San Francisco Vigilance Committee of 1856. At the time the committee was organized San Fran- cisco was given over to a reign of terror, even the ofhcials were corruptg crime remained unpunished. When James King of William, editor of the Bulletin was killed by James J. Casey because he had de- nounced Casey and the political corruption the com- mittee was formed to see that justice was done. William T. Coleman, organizer and leader was made chairman of the Vigilance Committee and thousands of citizens gave him their support. The committee brought Casey to justice, and made a general clean-up of the city as well. The site of Fort Vigilance is now located at 243 Sacramento Street. Uzcieazfm, pw ' dm, cwlwz' gaudy of . To be members of some of the clubs you have to be enrolled in the classes from which they originate. The Library Club, sponsored by Miss Grayson, is one such example. The members at one time or another have taken Library and now belong to the club which did such a big job this year by collecting books and taking inventory. They con- sist of students with high scholastic records. Every term they have a special trip for the members. The Senior Control is limited to members of the high senior class. These members patrol the hallways and stairs and help prevent accidents resulting from careless students. Richard lfartinez was the Chief-of- Police in the Fall and Richard Lingelser served in rNames on Page 88l this capacity during the Spring. Congress is also a limited club. In this organization the members are elected bv their classmates. Congress holds spefial meetings during the term. The Volunteers are students that serve the school in its cafeteria, ofhces, bookroom, and library. Thev are rewarded at the Awards Assem- blv with a pin for their services. Miss Helen Thursbv is the sponsor of this verv worthwhile club. Another group of clubs are open to all Commer- cities. The Glee Club is such an organization. Though some members are in the music classes, others are just students who enjoy singing and music. The club is headed bv Bliss Martin whose group sings at the graduations and assemblies. IX - ,,l,T, THE JUMPING FROG OF CALAYERAS 746 94401121114 7109 df Sports have long been an important part of the curriculum at Commerce, both interscholastic and intramural, for girls as well as boys. Whenever Com- mercites get together they are apt to bring the con- versation around to some sports event of the past. Then the tales that are told are many and fascinating, for mighty have been the deeds of many athletes who performed under the Blue and White banner. In this respect Commerce is not unlike the state that gave it birth. California too is noted for its sporting activities, which range from ice skating and skiing to swimming on sunny beaches, from mountain climbing to croquet, from tennis to bronco busting or bull dogging. California too has its legends and stories of sporting events to regale those who show interest in such matters. One such story is The jumping Frog of Calaverasn by Mark Twain. It is concerned with one, jim Smiley, who Hwas the curiousest man about always betting on anything that turned up you ever see, if he could get anybody to bet on the other side, and if he couldnlt he'd change sides. Smiley had a frog named Dan'l Webster. One day a feller-a stranger in the camp, he was saw the frog and said, Well, what's he good for? Smilcy's Claim that Dan'l was the best jumper in Calaveras brought forth from the stranger clearly expressed doubts and a willingness to bet on the sub- ject if he had a frog. Smiley offered to get another frog if the stranger would hold Danll. While Smiley was gone the stranger poured buckshot down Dan'l's throat. When the contest was set off U. . . the new frog hopped off lively, but Dan'l gave a heave, and hysted up his shoulders-so-like a Frenchman, but it warn't no use. He cou1dn't budge . . . The jumping scene pictured on the previous page was drawn by Anne Donlin. Outweighed by most teams they met, the Bulldog squad showed at all times the chief characteristic that usually made their play outstanding, and their season satisfactory if not undefeated. Fight was the hallmark of the 1949 Varsity and the trait for which the players will always be noted. Not conceded too much of a chance by the 'Lex- pertsf, the light team fielded by Coach Ed Smith fought doggedly in game after game, pulled a few surprise', wins on sheer nerve and fight, and when late November and the play-offs rolled around, there was Commerce, one of the four play-off teams. The Bulldogs were tied for third place with Washington at the end of league play, having a record of five wins and two losses. The play-off game with Balboa was disastrous. To say it was one of those off daysl' sounds like an alibi, but it was true that Commerce appeared to be able to do nothing right, Balboa could do nothing wrong. The Hnal score was Balboa 41, Commerce O. Preseason dope said the Commerce team was light and inexperienced and therefore would not be much of a contender for championship honors. The first game indicated the experts might be right, when a weak Lowell team was defeated 13-12 on a last minute conversion. The second game was with Poly. Commerce fought the champions to a stand-still, and in losing 21-13 confounded the experts and gave notice that they mprp nn nnehnvers. Galileo was the Bulldog competition in the third game. Result: Commerce 31, Galileo 7. Sacred Heart, the next victim, fell mortally wound- ed, 31-14. Defeating Mission brought the greatest of joy to Commerce. The Bears took a 19-7 whipping from the Bulldogs. Lincoln was the next team to toppleACommerce 26, Lincoln 17. The last game of the regular season before the play-oifls saw the Bulldogs meeting the Washington Eagles and losing 13-12. The play during the season showed that Coach Smith had a well balanced if light team, with several outstanding players. Barnes was a unanimous choice for All-City honors as a back. Gage, Hayes, and Sanchez were named on the second string All-City team. Whitaker, Racchi and Calhoun were placed on the third team. Coached by Mr. Ivor Calloway, the boys spend every afternoon of the football season practicing, sometimes long after the Varsity has left the field. The fellows do this willingly because each one hopes one day to be good enough to play on the Varsity. The team plays games against opponents of like strength. This year their season was fairly successful. Space prevents a listing of games and scores. y I 4 a SOCCER Although they finished third in the league, the soccer team enjoyed a comparatively successful season, high-pointed by the Hrst Commerce defeat of a Mission soccer squad in fourteen years. The team rated high in all-around playing ability and fight with a record of five wins, one tie and two losses. The team made the play-offs, only to be defeated by Washington, l to 0. Much of the credit for the teamls success should go to Coach Walt Lester. gaakezffcw, ,. zfegdzweaqaz mm. 110 POUND TEAM Top Row QL to RJ- Mr. Hedden, Tom Or- tiz, Fred Revilla, joe Lacuna. The bulldogs opened their season thumping the Parrots by a score of 31 to 25. Hanson Quock was high scorer in the game. The Pups next took on the Sacred Heart Irish, but were edged out 27 to 26. In their third encounter, the boys were victorious by slaughtering the lowly Saint Ignations by a score of 30 to 13. The Bulldogs took their fourth tilt from the Indians by a score of 29 to 24. The Thirties having tough luck, on their shots, lost a one pointer to Lincoln by a score of 29 to 28. The Bulldogs passed Balboa by a score of 31 to 30, but missed out on Mission by a score of 28 to 33. Next they took the Lions by a score of 35 to 27. But the team lost their last game of the regular season to Washington by a score of 18 to 30. The Thirties made the play offs, but were dis- qualified in the first game by losing to Sacred Heart by a score of 44-38. The Thirties will boast a good club for next year with the return of Dick Kalar, Walter Bremmond, Don Castillo, Joe Gaggero, Randolph Parish, McKin- ley Boyd, lvfilt Luxembourg, Harry Bremmond, Tom Gage, and Phil Jackson. They had a little tough luck throughout the season losing most of their games by just one point. They just missed getting into the playoffs by losing to Washington by a score of 39-30. Harry Mock Commerce star forward scored 92 points in the regular season to tie for top honors with Don Bragg of Galileo. Both were picked on the Hrst string all-city in the Call Bulletin and the News. Even though Mock made all-city we should not neglect the other players on the team. Playing opposite Mock at the other forward was Casey Jones, sensational junior whose sparkling play always kept Commerce a contender. Issac Walker a lanky sophomore who performed at center should be one of the standouts on next year's team. Playing the two guard positions were Al Young and David Lew, two fine ballhandlers. The varsity also had line reserves in Don Vicain, Roy Carrington, Rogers Derosans and Stanley Quan. 73 VARSITY Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce SCORES 33 - Poly 37 36 - Sacred Heart 35 29 - St. Ignatius 30 31 31 31 35 34 - 30 Lowell 30 Lincoln 37 Balboa 39 Mission 22 Galileo 32 Washington 39 SOME PRACTICE GAMES Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce Commerce 33 41 36 65 31 41 39 25 34 30 Poly 37 Richmond 37 Sacred Heart 35 San Rafael 3-1 Lowell 30 Santa Clara Frosh 32 Burlingame -1- Mission 22 Galileo 32 Washington 39 l Redus I I I -1' cyfrzfmedgdzfe, pdildl 706mm ., r' w- wmmef . - il . TRACK Since the All City Track Meet does not tal-ze place until the middle of May, the Final results of track, like the other Spring sports' results, cannot be included in this Record because this journal goes to press in the middle of April. The results of dual meets, however, indicate that the Bulldogs have one of the better teams in the league. The record to date stands at four wins and one loss. Commerce knocked oh' Galileo and Lincoln at the start of the season, and then lost to Washington. Coming back strong after this defeat, Commerce smeared Mission and Polytechnic in separ- ate meets. As we go to press the feeling of the team and coaches is one of optimism. It seems likely that the Bulldogs will be well represented in the finals in May. BASEBALL Although baseball season is now over, at the time this article was written there were several weeks re- maining in the season's schedule. This made it im- possible to include the Final standing of the Commerce team. A few pertinent remarks about the team may, however, be made. The record made by the Bulldog baseballers in the practice schedule was far from impressive. The boys won only five out of fifteen games. The most note- worthy thing about this practice campaign was that the players learned 7 the hard way perhaps, but they learned. Too many games were lost because of mis- takes. 'When the players made mistakes, coaches and players alike worked to eliminate the errors. That they succeeded fairly well appears obvious. At the present time the Bulldogs have won four and lost two to gain second place in league play. One of the two losses was to Balboa in a game that was marred by poor sportsmanship on the part of our opponents and an inadequate umpiring staff - only one man 7 who could not see everything that occcur- red on the held of play. No thanks to a Balboa player who apparently deliberately deflected a thrown ball to prevent a put-out, the Buccaneers won 3-2. At the beginning of league play, Commerce was off the bag fast and headed for home plate and the championship. Both Sacred Heart and VVashington were knocked off in one-two style, -I-2 and 5-l, re- spectively. But league leading lIission Q6 won-O lost defeated the Bulldogs 7-O. Then came the Balboa steal. Commerce came back, however, to beat Lowell's Indians in a close one, 7-6, and then to take the mea- sure of Poly -l-2. With three more games to go it appears at this time that the Bulldogs may very well be expected to com- pete in the play-offs. As extra-curricu- lar activities these sports earn for the girls points for scholarship work. And, of course, many of the girls take up the sports for the sheer enjoyment. As mem- bers of the G.A.A. fGirls' Athletic Associationj the girls participate in their activities before and after school. Club meetings are held every Friday second period. The directors of these sports are physical education teachers, who teach from one to two sports each semester, devoting their time and effort to making the girls, stay at Commerce an enjoyable one. Volleyball and badminton are the two very popular lighter sports enjoyed by the girls of Commerce. The former is also the favorite sport provided in the gym class activities. Badminton is played bright and early on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Miss Gantzer sponsors both the advanced and beginners class of badminton. In volleyball the different teamh play one another for the championship. This sport meets once a week. Elementary and intermediate tennis are taught bx Miss Thursby. Her Hnet slashers vie for top honors by participating in tournaments with a real spirit of competition. Tennis is a sport that requires rigid training, and happy is the girl who has gained recognition in this sport for skill and ease. Commerce girls are enthusiastic tennis players. f ,,,,r,,,,, , , - , ,, mvwu.zW A., 1 f f W f MV, ,, f , W.. 5 . WMM WWW Q V wwf WV NW, 5. There are usually from four to six teams and they play softball after school on the Commerce field. The girls are not as professional looking as our boys' baseball team but none the less they can provide an exciting game with a lot of home runs, Recreation is such a by-word at Commerce that the girls go out for as many sports as the boys do. Basketball, strenuous as it is, is very popular with the girls. They play after school in the girls' gym and though the rules are a little modified than those which govern the boys, game, it is still an interesting game to watch. Swimming offers a great deal of enjoyment to Commercites. The girls go swimming after school at Crystal Plunge. Some are beginners and others ad- vanced. There they can learn to swim or improve their swimming ability. Some of the better swimmers join the Dolphinettes, Miss Sink's swimming club that meets Friday morning's at the Plunge. Swimming has always proved to be a popular sport at Commerce. In the Fall term Miss Gantzer held archery class before school. Once a week, early in the morning, our future Robin Hoods practice their bow and arrow techniques. The equipment is provided by the school as it is in all other sports and the girls have a good chance to learn this unusual sport. ,,., , ,,,,,f .wa N W .W ,,....,,,,...,.,M W,,n....,,.,MW,,,..wm-.W.,.fM.WffM,m.wg467,1-7,.w,-5-WMW-wqv-A-fm-gymwyww7-f-jymfyf W fsfwvgff'-7 ,ya ,gyffrfff wwffffiryvw , ,V ,sq 2I'Ql ll....L......L.......L ..,.. 1.4, ,...: .,,, LL ,,,. .... f ,... f ,,,.. f 1 ff ,f m. ,f 3 VOLLEYBALL BASKETBALL Spafata - anyone f -n f A ,Z Cai 1 - uv! n gb., HWY f ? Her heart is a song and a star -- My cool, grey city of love.r Tho they tear the rose from her brow, To her is ever my vow, Ever to her I give my duty - First in rapture and first in beauty, Wayward, passionate, brave, Glad of the life God gave - The sea-winds are her kiss, And the sea-gull is her dove, Cleanly and strange she is -- My cool, grey city of love. The winds of the future wa-it At the iron walls of her Gate, And the western ocean breaks in thunder, And the western stars go slowly under, And her gaze is ever West -- In the dream of her young unrest. Her sea is a voice that calls, And her star a voice above, And her wind a voice on her walls - My cool, grey city of love. Tho they stay her feet at the dance, In her is the jar romance.
